What happens inside your body when the seasons change?
Dragon Boat Festival is more than a traditional holiday. In ancient China, it marked an important turning point in the seasonal cycle—a time when nature, climate, and the human body all began to shift.
According to traditional Chinese wisdom, human beings are not separate from nature. As summer approaches its peak, the body's internal balance changes as well. Heat moves outward, humidity rises, and the challenge becomes maintaining harmony with the season.
In this video, we explore:
• Why Dragon Boat Festival falls at a seasonal turning point • The connection between the Summer Solstice and human health • How heat and dampness affect the body • Why traditional Chinese culture sees humans as part of nature • Ancient Chinese wisdom for maintaining balance during seasonal transitions
Discover a fascinating perspective on health, nature, and seasonal living from the Chinese tradition.

This video explains the significance of the Duanwu Festival (Dragon Boat Festival) from the perspective of traditional Chinese calendars and the relationship between human health and the cosmos. It describes how the transition of seasons and the balance of yin and yang affect the body's metabolism and internal homeostasis.
Now, because every timing point is something changing outside, in the climate, in the cosmos,
the human body is just part of Mother Nature, part of the cosmos.
Our body is changing too.
端午(duān wǔ) means right at the number five. Why?
Because this festival, this Double Mid Festival — I'm going to explain the Dragon Boat later —
is the fifth day of the fifth month, the 五月(wǔ yuè), 五日(wǔ rì),
— this month, this day.
That's the traditional Chinese calendar, not now.
Right now it's the middle of June, right?
We generally use the solar calendar across the world now.
But in ancient times — and even now, still — the traditional chinese calendar is still used.
That's the day.
Friday, this coming Friday,
which should be June 19th.
Two days after this festival, there's another Chinese solar term called 夏至(xià zhì).
We're going to talk about that later.
Means the summer is getting to the peak.
夏至(xià zhì) is just two days after this 端午節(duān wǔ jié), okay?
So it's right at the fifth month,
the fifth day of the fifth month, that day.
We set it as a festival. That's called 端午(duān wǔ).
端午(duān wǔ), right at the crossover, almost at the tip of the peak of the time changing,
from long days to shorter days, getting really hot.
Then it should cool down in a way. Why?
It's not really cooling down.
Maybe the temperature is still hot,
but that is also the time when humidity, the dampness,
濕氣(shī qì), dampness or humidity, is coming up, getting humid, alright?
So that's the standing point, right?
The crossing point. That's called 端午(duān wǔ). 午(wǔ) means crossover, right? Okay.
A Yin-Yang transformation.
Now, because every timing point is something changing outside, in the climate, in the cosmos,
the human body is just part of Mother Nature, part of the cosmos.
Our body is changing too.
Our body, the metabolism, everything inside is catching up.
Because it's getting hotter and hotter outside,
the heat inside our body cannot accumulate too much.
So the heat inside our body needs to come out too.
So metabolism changes.
Okay, then when the heat inside the body comes out,
because all this heat inside our body has accumulated since last winter,
then it gradually comes out, little by little, in the spring.
Now it's really hitting the hot summer.
All that heat needs to come out because we need to keep the homeostasis,
keep the heat in a very good balance
in order for our body to maintain a good metabolism.
Otherwise, it causes problems.
So our body is catching up with what's happening outside.
But somehow, when you rush to catch up, you leave space,
you leave a gap inside.
What's happening outside there, in the cosmos, in the climate,
between the sky and earth, between heaven and earth,
along with the heat getting hotter and hotter, the humidity, the dampness, also grows.
So while our body is catching up, it leaves space,
allowing dampness or humidity a chance to get into our body to fill the gap.
Got me? So the heat is running out,
then you've got space, and something comes inside.
