Rashford injury scare, Scotland's bubble burst, Brazil bag first win, Zlatan Airao. This is proper
football daily. Sean Dean, excellent start to the World Cup for England. First bit of worrying news
broken out of the England camp. It's on the back page of today's Sun, broken by our man Charlie
Wyatt who's in there with the England camp. Marcus Rashford injury scare, felt his hamstring after
the Croatia game. Worrying times Dino. But we have got Anthony Gordon of course if he's not
available. Yeah but I think it's one of those things we talked about with Bakaya Saka isn't it
earlier in the tournament. You want everyone fit and firing because it then drives everybody else
on. So fingers crossed he's okay. We've got a couple of days more training until they go into
the Ghana game so hopefully he'll be okay and it's not anything major because obviously they
now can't replace any players. Good get by Charlie, Sean what do you think? Yeah yeah it was good get
and I think it's a disappointment for Rashford because I think he'd made his pitch to be
starting. Quite. I don't think there was a lot of us who hadn't been convinced of him particularly
in the last few years who thought you know what he's starting to look the business and a bit of a
setback for him and a bit of a setback for England I think. Can you give us any insight Sean having
covered eight World Cups now what's it like being in and around the camp when you're
trying to get stories and whispers and stuff like that what's it like? Challenging, it's always
challenging but you know you're trying to talk to agents, you're trying to talk to peak friends of
players and they're all being told oh don't tell people anything and you have to really
work it and so Charlie's done well there because it's hard work. Do we think then Dino
with obviously Gordon being waiting in the wings we spoke about it on Tactics Exposed Team Talk
which you will be able to watch pretty much now if you're watching this video as good as live
Sunsports YouTube channel and of course the new Tactics Exposed YouTube channel which we've
launched as well you can get the latest episode of Team Talk there. Dino, Anthony Gordon waiting
in the wings do you think Rashford starts if he's fit? I think if Rashford is a hundred percent fit
in this game I would start Rashford. Dino on the other wing still doubts over Bakayosaka. Sorry one
second like I said this in Tactics can you take those glasses off I can't I can't take you seriously
in those glasses. Well they were recording a behind the scenes video but I'll take your point
The Achilles problem of course didn't start the first game against Croatia
Thomas Huggles has been saying for a while that he doesn't feel he's ready. Saka doesn't agree
with him based on his previous quotes but is that a worry or is it fine during the group stage?
Again fine during the group stage I think don't risk him unless he's a hundred percent and Noni
Madueke played well in that first game was quick direct and will be a handful against Ghana because
they leave a bit of space around the outside so if Saka's a hundred percent fine but if not
cotton wool. The whole narrative about England has been we've got great strength in depth and
it's up there with France so we can't be deciding it's a disaster if we've got Marcus Rashford and
Bakayosaka. We've got the players who can take their place. We do like a disaster don't we? Well
not us necessarily but just generally English people around World Cups love a disaster. Yeah
and we shouldn't consider this to be one the only disaster would be if Harry Kane was injured.
Is this more or less of a disaster than the great trainer robbery when all the kit went missing?
That's the new yardstick against which all disasters shall be measured from now on.
Patrick Vieira one of the greatest midfielders of all time has described Elliott Anderson as
the complete midfielder. Vieira with his Man City links of course. Man City like the look of Anderson
very much indeed hope to take him from Nottingham Forest this summer. Quite the high compliment.
Yeah I mean it's a bit of a Manchester tug of war between United and City for Anderson and
I just think he's class. Absolutely class. We've looked at him all year on Tactics Exposed.
He plays in different positions. He picks the ball up in different positions and he sort of
quietly had 77 touches I think it was in that England-Croatia game and again quietly sort of
had a very very good game whilst we were talking about everybody else. But that's right I mean
Kyle Walker was saying to us wasn't he how impressed he was with him. He particularly
picked him out and I'm gonna be honest passed me by. I was concentrating on how good we were
going forward but clearly everybody's got so much faith in him he's going to be one of the
mainstays of this team. David Beckham left Harry Kane a voice note to congratulate him on matching
Beckham's 115 England cap haul. Is that the sort of thing that sort of it's easy PR obviously we've
discussed that a couple of times on Proper Football Daily already but actually Beck still cares a lot
about the England team wants it to do well. Is that just a nice little message or a bit gimmicky?
Well no I think it's great you know old England captain sends new England captain a nice message
with a voice note to say well done on levelling his caps and good luck and whatever and we've
been watching the TV over here in the States and you cannot move for David Beckham out.
I'm surprised he had time to drop Harry Kane a voice note quite frankly with the amount he's
the amount he's doing but no it's great and golden calls as he's on the back page of the Sun.
I think it's become the thing now for revered former players of any country now to pass messages
on to the team it's the thing in fact if you don't do it people want to know why yeah yeah yeah
why didn't we hear from you? No genuinely they do. You're allowed to send an old mate a message.
Social media and everything everybody's got to send a message to everybody. Call me a cynic.
Well what's worried about this uh this format so far I think or this show is that Dino you've
been dubbed a sentimentalist by Sean. Sean's labelled himself a cynic there. He doesn't need
to label himself a cynic I don't think. Perhaps not but the worrying thing for me is the more I
listen to the two of you the more I find myself agreeing with Sean. Why is that worrying? Well
just for me I didn't realise I had such a cynical outlook on the world. Scotland played again today
lads it turns out beating Haiti 1-0 isn't quite the sign of an all-conquering team as we thought
because they then played Morocco who you guys watched against Brazil at the MetLife in game
week one or game round one. Morocco beat them 1-0 they were largely the better team. Scotland
didn't have too much to offer. Ismail Saibiri scored his second goal of the tournament after
that excellent chip over Alisson. Smashed it in within two minutes of the game. Scotland you think
still on course to qualify what did you make of it? Yeah 70 seconds the goal like unreal great
strike and I think it was Grant Hanley who tried to play an offside line when he shouldn't have
and just let Saibiri run in and it was a really really good goal. I'm gonna have to be quite
critical of Steve Clarke. They didn't play very well in the first half Scotland and it was almost
like they were too cautious. They got there winning the first game they pick here in Tierney
and so it was Tierney and Robertson trying to rotate on that left-hand side it was very 5-4-1
or 4-5-1 it was a bit negative and it took them till the second half to really get going and wake
up when they're then chasing the game and then obviously Morocco had some chances as well but
Tomane looked really good but in large parts of the game he was picking the ball up on the halfway
line deep like no that that's not his game for Napoli and for Scotland he's been the one getting
in the box so yeah it was a bit disappointing for me for Scotland and they came too late.
And they had they had a couple of great silver penalty calls and the feeling that the opposition
should have had a red card as well but I think they're clutching at straws a little bit. I do
feel Morocco were the better team but Scotland put themselves in a position to still make history
by getting in the knockouts by the fact they beat Haiti in the first game it's a tough or
tough task the next game Brazil but they could still sneak through even if they lost that game.
In case you missed it Sean hates the phrase make history and so Scotland will make history when
they qualify from the group next week. Well I've spoken to the editor-in-chief of the US Sun
Jill Smith who was a proud Scottish person who was at the game today after the game and after
the initial I just said look thinking of you after the final whistle after the expletive laden
reply that I got in the first instance she went on to insist that well it doesn't matter because
after the Brazil game when we qualify I'll be crying happy tears and I'll be coming on
proper football daily to stick it up all of you English lot that's what she said yeah.
Brazil played Haiti they won as suspected that was in Philadelphia 1.30am UK time Matthias
Cunha Manchester United star bagged two goals on his World Cup debut pulled out his signature
celebration yeah but fairly resolute performance as you'd expect getting on the score sheet for
Cunha is obviously a positive thing good for the whole Brazil team because he wasn't a guaranteed
starter what'd you make of it? Yeah it was his first World Cup start a couple of goals
absolutely fantastic and they yeah they played slightly differently today Brazil
different shape and Igor Thiago left out and Cunha up front and it made their front line
a little bit more flexible and look we know how dangerous Rafinha Vinicius Jr and he is going to
be if they're just floating around the place the problem for Brazil is behind that but later in the
tournament they were far too good for Haiti. But also there's a worry about Rafinha now how she
came off quite possible hamstring injury so that would be constant concern for Brazil because he's
been one of their key players I thought Brazil played pretty well might have expected a few more
goals second half but they're probably getting into the groove now. Absolutely let's also hear
Paul move on from our man Josh Jones who was at the game. Well in the city of independence here
in Philadelphia Matthias Cunha has shown that Carlo Ancelotti can very much depend on him as
Brazil's number nine starting in the World Cup for the very first time he scored twice in the 3-0
adding the third before halftime the only blip on the evening for Brazil with Rafinha limping
off injuries it's unclear whether that was a precaution or if that's a serious injury which
we'll be sure hear more on in the coming days Neymar of course still out with that
calf injury that he's only going to return from in the knockout stages. Good to hear from JJ there
gents and it's time for our first hydration break of the show and what do we do on our hydration
breaks? Have a beer. We have a beer and what sort of beer do we have? A Hawkston. We have a Hawkston
of course. Proper Football Daily is brought to you in partnership with Hawkston and we've teamed up
for an incredible tournament prize check the description of this video to find out more
and enter it's 18 plus only terms and conditions apply always drink responsibly. Dean Sean, Troy
Deeney, Sunsport columnist is coming on tomorrow's Proper Football Daily he's New York based we went
out for a drink with him the other night and had a chat. Troy's somewhat of a big fish over this
side of the pond these days he's on CBS very often and on CBS ahead of this tournament he said
that there's every chance that Team USA finish bottom of their group we will no doubt put that
to him tomorrow on Proper Football Daily but 2-0 against Australia in Seattle for the state today
absolutely brilliant game they qualify for the knockout stages from Group D that Cameron Burgess
own goal 11 minutes in he plays for Swansea by the way in case you didn't know that and Alex Freeman
on the 43rd minute making it 2-0 to the States Alex Freeman by the way who Pochettino dubbed
afterwards perhaps the best player in his position in the world. Wow! That sounds like a bit of a
statement you'd expect to come out of an actual American's mouth rather than just the American
manager. He's getting the hang of it Potts. Exactly before we go into exactly what happened in the game
these were the scenes in the Wall Street bar where we watched it together earlier on.
Not sure about some of the camera work on that. Was that filmed on your glasses?
And do you know I catch you joining in with USA. No I wouldn't. He was. I did yeah I did in the
spirit they're quite enjoying it over here you know you know. They are now. Don't be a cynic.
Now they've got the Knicks out of the way and whatever else they did enjoy it a bit today but
they do get excited when the goal goes in then they go back to having a chat and then they wait
because it's true it's how they watch their sport we don't just it's the same with the
baseball oh there's a home run all right that's our hot dog. They did only when we were watching
it in the bar we'd all sort of seen that the game had kicked off it was only about two and a half
minutes in when they turned the commentary on that all of the Americans around us went
and there's lots of chatter going on around in the bar and you know and it's certainly not about
no absolutely no no it's a bit like watching tennis isn't it exactly yeah with the utmost
respect of course to our American producers over there who we're very grateful for your work and
we love your country thank you for welcoming us uh talking of American staff Dave Scott
team U.S. correspondent for the U.S. Sun spoke to us after the game.
USA 2 Australia 0 a great result for the United States men's national team some of y'all behind
the desk were telling me that the U.S. might not make it out of the group well guess what
they're clinched now thanks to a great result against Paraguay and then today's result against
Australia really great stuff all around Christian Pulisic not on the pitch to that calf injury
but the offense really didn't skip a beat Mauricio Pochettino's system proving to be
useful against different types of opponents and Australia just could not get anything going I mean
the Americans had control of this game pretty much the entire time really great games from
Fuller and Balgan up at the striker position again he's your man in the match for the second
game in a row he did not score but it was his effort that got that early own goal that put the
United States on top at the beginning of the game and then defender Alex Freeman young defender
really making his rises through the ranks he gets a goal in a header that had a very lengthy VAR
check but what ended up being upheld a lot a lot a lot of pride in Alex Freeman Mauricio Pochettino
says he can be the best player at his position in the world and the more I watch him the more
I think he might be right but for now the celebrations are the United States is out of
the group going to the round of 32 they got one more match in this group against Turkey
but it's pretty much formality at this point probably just going to be for seeding in the
group I think we're being done by association with Deeney there I don't think we said they
wouldn't get out of the group I actually I absolutely said they would as I say in response
to Deeney but it's all right because tomorrow you've got Troy Deeney America won't get on the
group and Sean Custis Lionel Messi shouldn't be at the World Cup so it'd be a great chance
German referee Felix Zweier went down with cramp at the end of the game and then had a shot of
pickle juice game's gone utter woke nonsense surely referees going down with cramp what is
the world coming to just needs to be a bit fitter it's nothing to do with woke it's just he's got
to be fitter I mean it was hot to be fair but if players get cramp why can't refs get cramp they do
run a long way yeah they're not running as far as the players though are they not no absolutely
not because you have to stay within a square grid in the middle of the field between penalty
area to penalty area they do run a long way though there must be that you give us some
tactical analysis for us to death on refs we're talking to one of Kent's finest referees here
aren't we I can't believe you revealed that on air um but it's uh uh yeah you between seven and
eight k right pickle juice as well talk me through that you've had a pickle juice shot before I have
yeah and uh I've not had it like producer Luke um with with major celebrities after a after a shot
of alcohol but um I have had it um as in marathon training and it is uh and it meant to be an
immediate cure for cramp it is absolutely revolting and I can confirm it didn't cure anything in my
running um by the way Luke uh had a shot of pickle juice and a bourbon I believe with Selena Gomez
are you gonna say who it is well I think I mean we can always cut it out after so that is the sort
of company he keeps he likes tennis as well and rather than us chaps up there he just liked
football and don't hang out with celebrities there's some exciting games coming up later on
lads Holland and Germany back in action Holland v Sweden is a 6 p.m kickoff UK time in Houston
their third in that group behind Sweden obviously I think it's only alphabetically uh that leaves
Sean says that Virgil van Dijk is turning like a Boeing 747 he did score in the opening game
against Japan it was obviously two all an excellent encounter um a little bit harsh
on Virgil yes seemed a bit harsh to me didn't seem like you played that bad Will I don't think
it's harsh I think he's been pretty poor second half of the Premier League season in that particular
game I didn't think he was that bad but I don't I I think he's starting to creak a little bit this
is one of those tournaments though isn't it where we're kind of seeing the changing of the guard
lots of the old veteran legends of kind of handing the baton on you imagine it'd be Bobby well unless
he got a hat trick he's hardly handing the baton on I mean last world cup as in is it the last one
was his last world cup I've just said I think you go on the next world cup the guy's so good
what a u-turn that was by the way Germany played the Cote d'Ivoire um at 9 p.m UK time Germany
have got the joint highest goal difference of anyone in this world cup at the moment
particularly of the teams who've only played one game uh Cote d'Ivoire of course beat Ecuador
in the opener after that late and I'd go on an excellent piece in the sun today the Amanda who
plays in Germany at the moment will be coming up against lots of his Bundesliga counterparts
about the death of his sister and how that's affected him ahead of this world cup but he is
really the star in their ranks isn't he Dean he is yeah and it's a remarkable story about his whole
background and upbringing I urge you to read it not just about the tragedy that he's had and you
know everything all to do with his mum and moving he was playing college football level in America
less than two years ago and it's just an unbelievable fairy story to get to the world
cup and yes Liverpool are very very close to signing him and he is some player I tell you he
is electric unbelievably quick and uh yeah he's the main man for sure Sean we've got thing of the
day thing of the day yes back again what we got today well last week we saw the Boston police
showing off their skills and they were pretty impressive but they were not half as impressive
as these two they call that techers these days Sean yeah there you go let's have a go no I think
I'll just leave it there and the AI row you were referring to about that is what well suggestions
in the office earlier wasn't it not by me well there was there was a discussion wasn't there
about whether it was AI or not I'll be honest I initially did think it was AI because well just
because of the well maybe you can't do that Thierry Henry in particular there was a bounce I
was like that looks an AI bounce I've seen Thierry Henry do that sort of thing before not just for
Arsenal but when he's been on he was on an advertising ship with us once he used to be
a son columnist flicking the ball up he can do everything with it but I wasn't surprised to see
honestly that's phenomenal brilliant absolutely brilliant yeah can you so now are you going to do
it yeah yeah come on no I'm I would but I don't want to embarrass the two of you and I think the
light and sound technicians will get a bit nervous to be fair and all the hawks that's it for this
episode of proper football daily another absolute belter tomorrow we'll be joined by Troy Deeney
sunsport columnist and former footballer of course and we will put it to him about his
pre-tournament thoughts that team USA would finish bottom of their group but Troy loves
robust debate doesn't he so I'm sure he'll have something to come back at us with thank you for
watching this episode of proper football daily don't forget to like this video give it a hype
