Getting answers, uncovering the truth. Boston 25 News investigates. We told you
about one and now 25 investigates has learned of another Delta flight forced
to quickly abort its landing in Boston. I'm investigative reporter Ted Daniel.
This animation from flight aware shows Delta flight 10 75 from Raleigh about
the touchdown at Logan Airport sunday afternoon. You can see here the plane
pull away to the left after an air traffic controller told the pilots to
go around. A person who identified themselves as a passenger tells 25
investigates the flight crew announced that there was another aircraft on the
runway. This happened just one day after another Delta flight was forced to make
a similar maneuver. In that case, a flight from Dallas had to take evasive
action to avoid an American Airlines jet that had been cleared for takeoff on
the same intersecting runway. Experts estimate those two planes came within
roughly 300 ft of each other. Delta says go around are by design safe and
routine maneuvers to ensure safety when conditions aren't perfect for landing.
More details now. Aviation experts were on Capitol Hill today to answer
questions about flight safety. Former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu now
heads Airlines for America. He was asked how A. I. Plays a role in the
process. A. I. Can be an amazing tool. There's no question about it. But at
the end of the day, it's all about the people right that are behind the tool
and the analytics used. So do we see A. I. Being integral in um flight
planning things of that nature warning systems potentially. But you have to
have the training and the people behind it, which is why our effort is always
about whether it's air traffic controllers, pilot training, whatever it
might take so that that tool is being properly utilized. But it's a tool.
It's not a solution. Also concerning lawmakers, air traffic controller
staffing shortages, aging infrastructure, increasing airspace
complexity and the need for F. A. A. Modernization. This is an evolving
issue. We will continue to monitor it closely. I'm Ted Daniel for 25
Investigates.
