At Least 164 Dead After Powerful Twin Earthquakes Hit Venezuela

At least 164 people were killed and nearly 1,000 others injured after two powerful back-to-back earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday evening. Its acting president, Delti Rodriguez, announced on Thursday morning, noting that the numbers are expected to rise further. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit about 100 miles west of Caracas, followed less than a minute later by another of magnitude 7.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency said there is a risk of more than 10,000 deaths. The state of La Guaira has been declared a disaster zone, with over 100 buildings collapsed. Severe damage and collapsed structures have also heavily impacted neighborhoods across the capital city of Caracas.
