Why Is Trump Sabotaging His Own Party?

I'm not a huge believer in conspiracy theories, but I will tell you that after this week in American politics, I could be convinced that Donald Trump was a Democratic plant designed to help Democrats win Congress back in the midterms. He is doing so many things that are the exact opposite of what you would do if you were leading a party and trying to keep that party's majority in the House and Senate that it makes me wonder what is going on. Now, I'll give you the short, the short version. I want to talk more about it. The short version is, I think what's going on is Donald Trump is all about Donald Trump, right? Donald Trump doesn't really care about the Republican Party unless the interests of the Republican Party and his interests align or dovetail. In general, he's going to do what he believes is good for him. And when it's when I say good for him, I mean politically and financially, he is always going to protect himself and look out for himself first, second and third, and then maybe the Republican Party fourth. And this week it is really come home to roost just how much Donald Trump doesn't care about his party and their chances in the 2026 midterms. I want to get into the evidence of why, but I do, I do want to talk about confusion and for Republicans trying to deal with things that are outside of your control. If you're a Republican trying to get elected in the age of Donald Trump. So I would circle Wednesday as a day that I think a lot of it really for Republicans came clearer. Right. And I'll tell you why. So on Wednesday morning, we expected a signing ceremony. Donald Trump was going to sign a bipartisan housing bill to address the affordability crisis, rent and mortgage crisis in this country. Right. To make things more affordable. This is past the House of the past, the Senate, House leaders, Republican leaders were holding a press conference or planning to hold a press conference to tout this before the signing as a way to say, see voters, we are targeting affordability. We hear you. And we, the Republican controlled Congress, are doing something about it, except Donald Trump early on Wednesday morning took to True Social to say, actually, the signing ceremony is canceled. We're not doing it unless and until the Republican controlled Senate passes the SAVE Act, which is Donald Trump's voter ID, citizenship, no excuse, absentee mail and balloting, sort of his attempt to rein in what he believes to be the irregularities in the voting system. Although I always note to people there aren't any evidence of that. Now, here's the issue. The SAVE Act doesn't have 60 votes that it needs in the Senate to end unlimited debate. It doesn't probably have the 50 votes it would need to get rid of the legislative filibuster and force a simple majority vote on it. It hasn't had it for months. Donald Trump's been pushing this for months. It hasn't had it for months. It doesn't have it today. It's not going to have it tomorrow. It's not going to have it in a month. This housing legislation will become law within 10 days, whether or not Donald Trump signs it. So what you'll get is a housing bill that Republicans could have seized on and said, see, we're doing something. We are addressing affordability concerns. Now you get none of that. You get maybe it just becomes a law without Donald Trump's signature, but you don't get a big taking credit for it, right? You don't get anything for it. And that alone would be enough, I think, to say, see, proof positive Donald Trump does not care about the Republican Party's prospects in the midterms. But he was not done because on Wednesday, later that day, he went to the Senate Republican lunch. They have lunch. They have a lunch of Republican senators. Democrats do the same thing every week. And in it, Trump basically yelled at and berated Republican senators for not being loyal enough to him, including four of them who voted for a war powers resolution to force Trump's hand to have him come to Congress and explain his plan for the war in Iran. He got into a shouting match with one of those four. Bill Cassidy. Bill Cassidy is a Louisiana senator. Donald Trump endorsed a primary opponent against him. Bill Cassidy finished third. He is not coming back to the Senate. He's got nothing to lose. So you basically had Trump yelling at Republican senators and at least one Republican senator yelling back. So on a day, Wednesday, that should have been for the Republican Party, the first step in their attempts to say, we know things cost too much. We are doing what we can because we control the White House, the Senate and the House. We are doing things legislatively that are going to make it better. And we are going to bear hug this housing bipartisan bill. We are going to say we gave this to American public and we're going to give you more. It went from that to a story about Donald Trump's quixotic attempts to pass the SAVE Act, which is not going to happen. I've said it over and over again in videos still not happening to a story about that and him yelling at Republican senators over the deeply unpopular war in Iran and their attempts to rein in what is happening over there again. You could not make this better for Democrats if a Democrat had written the script and forced Donald Trump to read it this day. That Wednesday went as badly as it possibly could for the Republican Party, who I will note is facing historic headwinds in midterm elections, an unpopular president. Donald Trump is in the high 30s, maybe the low 40s in terms of job, concerns about affordability, whether that's on housing, whether that's on groceries, other everyday goods, distrust of the Republican Party and Trump about their handling of the economy and a president who continues to say that affordability is a made up Democratic word. It is, again, he doesn't care about the Republican Party because if he did, he would have had a big signing ceremony and made a big deal of that housing bill and given his party in Congress a win that they could take home. Instead, they got nothing, bupkis, and actually worse than nothing. He turned it into a day about Republican infighting and how Republicans can't get done this legislation that he wants done, which, again, isn't going to happen. It is remarkably stupid, politically speaking, unless you understand that Donald Trump only cares about himself. Donald Trump wants the SAVE Act because he wants legacy building. He wants the war in Iran, he wants legacy building, and he wants to say he solved the Middle East so that he can win a Nobel Peace Prize. The point is, none of this is about the Republican Party. All of it is about Donald Trump, and it all hurts his party badly. He does not get it. He does not care. And if you're a Republican on the ballot in November, you have to be sweating bullets right now. All right. That's it for me. I hope you subscribe.
