AI GeneratedLisa from Primitive Gatherings demonstrates how to prepare the \"Very Merry Mini Quilt,\" the ninth in her monthly mini series. The tutorial focuses on the preparation and stitching of half-square triangles using specialized triangle paper and specific fabric combinations to create an intricate holiday-themed design.
Hey everyone, it's Lisa from Primitive Gatherings and today I get to talk about our ninth
Monthly mini and it's called the very merry mini quilt so you can download or purchase this pattern on our website
And here she is
It is December
so
We have the red and green and cream quilt. It's just gorgeous
Alicia did a very good job on this one. So today
There is only a bunch of half square triangles
And I'm just going to kind of walk you through getting ready
Just in case we have a bunch of new people that are just coming on
So I want to kind of go backwards and start from the beginning
So all of the nine monthly minis that I've been talking about have come out of these two fat quarter packs
Garden gatherings, so if you want to use our fabrics, we still may have some of these available
Please check on our website for that
And then we also have just the kit for this one if you are interested in just this one
We will have kits available for this as well. All right, so I'll clear these out of my workspace
You're also for this quilt going to need
3-quarter inch
Triangle paper now our triangle papers here at primitive gatherings come two ways
They come in a sheet which we call triangle paper
And then we also have them that come in charm shape so about five inches
So we have triangle charm paper or triangle paper
So if your pattern calls for triangle paper, you want the sheets if it calls for charm paper, you want the five inch ones?
Okay, so move this a little out of the way
The first thing you're going to do when you get your fabrics and there's nothing wrong with using your own fabrics as well
this fabric takes five
fabrics and we have a nice dark green a nice red a
light red a
Light green which is really cream with green and then we have a background. Okay
So those are the fabrics now when you're getting ready
The first thing I want you to do if you've never done this before is to starch your fabrics
Some of you have been doing this forever with me, but like I said, we always have new people
So what you're gonna want to do with this is you're gonna want to lay it out on
your surface you're gonna lay down a towel and
you're gonna lay this on the towel and you're going to
Line up this nozzle with this red dot here and then you're literally gonna spray this whole thing
So it's soaking wet and then you will hang them all on a drying rack. You're gonna let them dry naturally and
Then when they're all dry, you will press them with steam flatten them all nice and so they're ready to go
So I do have a little bit of pressing to do here. So I'm just gonna
take these and press them quickly and
Mine are not starched. So I'm just kind of winging it for this demo for you. So I'm just gonna flatten them all out
upside down
Not quite big enough
I'm used to my big ironing surface at home or at the retreat centers here. We have nice big
ironing surfaces
And we don't have to do any of this moving back and forth like this
All ready to go now, so I'm just gonna slide those over there for a minute
I'm gonna go and look at my pattern here and I'm gonna cut some
triangle paper
Configurations as the pattern tells me so here is my sheet
and I'm going to
Let's see. I need one two
two full sheets
So I'm just going to line them both up like this
I'm just going to take my rotary cutter and I'm going to trim away
This edge here
Now you don't have to do this if you don't mind wasting a little bit of fabric
And it really probably doesn't matter on these ones, but when you have a lot of them on the same sheet
You have to put them end to end to end this little half-inch adds up
All right, so I need two full ones
Those are right there and then I need one with two by six
So one two, three, four five six, so I only need
This much right here. So I'm going in the middle there and then I'm going to trim
the other edges
And you can use a ruler as well
if you need to
If you feel better with that and then I need a four by six. So one of these this is coming off
And then another two by six
There's a bunch of different combinations of half square triangles. There's a two and then one two by four
So you could just do this
Set a waste in another sheet
Going to do this
now
Just want to show you this
You're going to leave the whole line intact here. So you're only going to trim on the outside of it
There like that so you're leaving all those cutting lines intact you don't want to ever just sew on a line
Or trim on a line that's already been cut. All right a little bit of housecleaning here
Now we're all set
He's on my lap here for a minute
so the first combination that we need is a full sheet and a
Two so we need this
So our pattern tells us
To cut
Ten and a half by twelve so you can do that
Or you you're going to your light red and light green. So these two fabrics right here
You're gonna lay right sides together with the light on top. So the red looks a little bit darker
so I'm gonna lay that right side up and then I'm gonna take my
Light and lay it right sides down
So then you can just do this
Or this whatever which way you want to cut it it really doesn't matter we have plenty of fabric here
so you just do this and
take your
Ruler
You move it out of my way. I slide it up. Thank you
Alright, so then we're just going to give ourselves a little bit of room here
Maybe about an eighth inch away
a little more
So then this one is ready to stitch and
then next up we have
light and dark red together and that one is a
full sheet
Take this one right here
And then our red
Lay the dark one down always get in the habit of dark one on the bottom and light one on the top
Lay that I always like to match my salvages so I know where I'm at
in my fabric
All right. So then I just need this one on here now be careful when you have your salvages that
This is not on the salvage part so I can just sneak that one out of here too. That one is ready
Okay
And then next up we have dark and light green so we don't need any of those
Here is the dark green
Here is my light green
Which is really cream with?
Light green. All right, I'll leave this right sides together
Automatic automatic and there will be a time when you will sew these fabrics wrong. We all have done it
So don't be too hard on yourself. It does happen. So this one is the four by six here
So we probably can just utilize
This space here instead of going into that nice big hunk there
Make sure it's plenty big enough there. Yep. So why not just cut that?
All right, next up we have to pair a light red with the background so here's my back some of my background
Light red and background. Where did I fling that one over here? Okay
So here is some of our light red now this one we need two by six, so this is this one here
Okay
So not that much
background and light red
And I'm gonna put the background on top
So I am gonna switch these around
So we'll put this one on the bottom this one on the top
And then the paper goes on and then we have one left light green and
Background. All right, so take this one and the light green
And we just need
that last little one
These two guys here. So these could be one or they're working like this
And then there will be some other cutting for some couple squares and some rectangles out of the remainders of these fabrics
But we're not going to do that today. I just wanted to show you
How to prep all of these?
Triangle pieces so the pattern will tell you which ones go together
They'll show you a diagram exactly how the paper goes on and now that you have all these now
It's time to stitch them. So I'm just gonna kind of show you
How you're gonna do that?
So you're gonna put this on and you can put some pins in it
But what I really like to do is I just like to run one row
so I'll just go and then you don't have to really pin anything so
Looking at this paper. I hope we got a nice close-up shot for you
But you're going to stitch on all of those dashed lines
all of the
Instructions for the triangle paper are on the cover of the sheet and the most important thing that you want to do is you want
To take your stitch length and shorten it to about half of what you normally stitch at
so I usually stitch at a
Smidge below two on my machine and I'm gonna put it all the way to to one because we want this paper to purple
Perf perforate off nice and easy
All right, so we're going to just stitch that all those back and forth on your machine and then once everything is all stitched
then you're going to come and you're going to trim the perimeter and
Then you're going to start trimming on all the solid lines on all of everything. That's solid
You're going to cut apart solid so you'll trim here. You'll trim in between everything
Lots of cutting to do on those. So just remember to slow down
Stitch
Accurately and cut accurately and then you will be able to make this quilt nice and accurately now
I just want to give you a quick little peek on how easy this goes together. I'm going to show you this right here
so you're making some strip units and then
The half square triangle units are in here and you're going to make two of these and the quilt goes together on a diagonal
so simple
Repetitive and
it's going to look like you are did something really really hard because when you see the finished quilt it looks
very
intricate
All right. That's all I have for you today. Happy stitching and we'll see you next time for number 10 mini
