Sean from American Window Concepts exposes seven common deceptive tactics used by window salesmen. He warns homeowners against high-pressure sales strategies, unrealistic energy-saving claims, and biased product recommendations, urging consumers to prioritize specialized installation and clear warranty terms over \"limited-time\" offers.
Hey guys, Sean with American Window Concepts.
In today's video, we're talking about the seven lies
that window salesmen love to tell.
Let's get into that.
How about this buy one, get one free offer expires tonight?
That's kind of weird, right?
Like why would they say something like,
well, tonight only, if you sign here,
you can get a buy one, get one.
So your 14 window package, you're actually paying for seven
and you get the other seven free.
How would something like that actually work?
I've never had any manufacturer say,
hey, Sean, if you put together some kind of a package
for 10 windows, you know, we'll give you five for free.
That way you can get some crazy price to the customer.
Not one manufacturer has ever said that to me.
That's gonna be an in office type thing, a strategy.
How can we get these people to get the FOMO?
How can we get them to sign today?
If you buy seven, you get seven free
or you buy one, you get one free.
Same thing, right?
It's just different number.
If you've done any kind of shopping for big purchases
where you're gonna be financing something
or you're gonna do something for your house,
I'm sure you've gone through it where, you know,
they give you this number and then they start, you know,
working the number down.
So that's one of those big lies.
Now, how about this one?
These windows will pay for themselves in energy savings
in the next couple of years.
I mean, I love that as well, but the problem is,
they actually, it's not two years.
While the windows are energy efficient,
it's gonna take a little more than two years
to pay off whatever amount that it was
that you spent on your windows.
A 10 window, two door package, maybe $15,000.
With that $15,000, I don't think you're gonna,
would have paid $15,000 in an energy bill, you know?
So it's gonna take a little longer
for that to actually pay itself off,
but it's bigger than just,
oh, it's gonna pay themselves off with energy.
It's when you're buying the windows,
it's more than just energy efficiency.
It's the look, it's the sound, it's the safety,
it's the warranty.
So all of that is gonna play into
why would you pay this much money for brand new windows?
It's not just, oh, these are gonna pay themselves off
in two years, nah.
Here's one I get all the time.
Triple pane windows, better than double pane windows.
I mean, the only time I could say
that a triple pane window is better
than a double pane window
is if you live in a very, very cold region
or a very, very noisy area.
Triple pane windows are better against the cold.
They just are.
They have more of a U factor.
That is the retention of warmth inside the house, okay?
So if you lived in Canada and it's blistering cold,
would I rather have a dual pane window
or a triple pane window?
Truth be told, a triple pane window,
and that's not even close.
There are options you can get for dual pane windows
to make them very high performers in the cold,
but end of day, I'm gonna go with a triple pane window
because it is going to be the best against cold.
And of course, like I said, sound.
So they're very, very quiet,
but dual pane windows come in very close
as far as sound quality.
Here's one I've heard.
Wood windows are terrible.
Vinyl windows are terrible.
Composite is the only window you should go with.
Hoopla.
That right there is somebody
who's selling something composite
and only selling something composite.
So of course, they have to say something
to kind of find themselves in this market
where people are looking for replacement windows.
Wood windows are beautiful by look, by feel,
and they also will take aluminum cladding,
vinyl cladding on the outside,
and that helps with having to paint them
every couple of years.
You don't have to do that so much with a wood,
but you're gonna pay through the nose for those.
Now, when you go to vinyl,
when people say, oh, vinyl is crap, don't ever buy that,
well, they probably got duped by somebody
who sold them some cheap vinyl windows,
and well, of course, they're gonna say,
oh, yeah, it's flimsy, it's no good,
it's this, that, and the other thing,
but that's not necessarily true.
There are wonderful vinyl windows out there
that will not give you any problems whatsoever,
and oh, by the way, have the best warranties.
You're not gonna get a warranty like that with fiberglass.
You're not gonna get a warranty like that with wood.
Vinyl is the best dollar-for-dollar window that you can get
that's gonna give you all the benefits,
and it's going to give you great warranties.
Here's one you might hear,
our warranty on the windows cover everything
should anything ever happen that covers everything.
This one is a little murky
because there's two different warranties.
You have the warranty that comes with the windows itself,
then you have the warranty that comes with the dealer,
the installers that installed them for you, right?
So you have the craftsmanship of the installation team,
and then you have the window itself, right?
So the window itself will be covered
against things like seal failures,
I would say balancer issues, that's single-hung windows
that the balancer gives way, pivot bar issues,
locking issues, roller issues, things like that.
Yes, you will have a warranty that will cover that.
But let's just say if the window is broken,
there are some window warranties that will cover that,
and some that will not.
The other thing about the installers
installing your windows for you is
if you use a reputable company to have them installed,
then yeah, they're gonna stand behind their name
because they're not trying to go out of business,
they gotta protect their name.
So if something did go wrong,
then they are gonna come out, inspect it,
find out what the problem is, and fix it.
While you have somebody in front of you,
you can pull your phone out and look at the company
right in front of them, and hey, I've seen this,
and hey, I've seen that.
Allow them to explain, you know?
But anyways, window warranties,
there's two different ones, okay?
You have the window, and then you have
the company who's installing it, so keep that in mind.
Here's one of my favorites.
I need to go outside and call my manager,
see if I can get a special price for you guys.
This is another one of, hey man, if I have to leave,
you know, the deal goes with me,
I'm gonna tell you what, if you do shoe them out your house,
you will get a phone call from their manager
probably the next day or two days later,
and they're gonna start cutting that price.
It's not gonna stop.
The deal, walking out the door with me, it's a lie.
It just is.
Nobody believes that these days.
But I'm making the video because I want people to know,
yeah, they're gonna continue to pitch that.
You know, hey guys, you know,
I really wanna get this done for you.
What's it gonna take, what's it gonna take?
You know, this deal goes out the door with me.
As soon as I leave, the price goes back up
to whatever it is.
No, it doesn't.
Don't listen to them.
Again, you're gonna get a call from their manager
or whatever, you know, and try to get this deal done.
That's high pressure.
It's annoying to me, and I'm sure it's annoying to you.
Okay, and finally, any licensed handyman can install these,
but trust us, we know what we're doing.
I don't like the idea of somebody who is a handyman
installing windows if they do so many different things,
right, so you can learn how to install windows
and pin these windows.
There's a special few people out there
who are really, really great with pretty much everything,
electrical, plumbing.
Heck, they can do windows and doors, too.
But window installing, it's a specific niche.
I mean, it takes a lot more than just,
oh, let's square it out.
There's a lot more that goes into it.
You wanna have a company that is licensed,
insured, and bonded, you know,
and handyman who's a licensed handyman
has to be licensed, insured, and bonded.
But again, they do all types of different things
all day, every day.
So when you're talking about a window installation team,
that's what they do all day, every day.
I think you can rest assured that they have their trucks
outfitted specific for window and door installations.
If they need very specific shims, they have it.
Very specific tools to get through
certain kinds of openings, they have it.
Those sealants, big, big one, they'll have it.
There's a difference between interior
and exterior sealants, they'll have it.
You get where I'm going with this?
Anyways, point is, guys, I'm always gonna be a backer
and supporter of licensed window installation teams
because it's what I do, it's what I've done my whole career,
and I would want you guys to have a great experience
with whomever you use.
Having the information before you go out
and get the window shopping,
I wanna make sure that you have all of the tools,
all of the understanding before you make a decision.
That way, when it's all said and done,
you're some happy campers.
All right, guys, make it a great day.
