AI GeneratedThis segment highlights the University of Minnesota's cold-hardy grape research, an international wine competition, and a master gardener tour. It also covers local events like exotic animal racing and a studio discussion featuring parenting dilemmas, entertainment news regarding Bonnie Tyler and upcoming films, and the legal fallout between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively.
Welcome back. We know Minnesota is known as one of the hubs for new flavors of apples,
but there's also a big focus and a big push on grape breeding. Garden Guide DLK is live at the
Landscape Arboretum as they get ready to put some new wines to the test. The breeding bags are
interesting. Yeah, exactly. Let me set the stage for you here. We're somewhere between
Carver, Victoria, and Chanhassen, and it's kind of here because it's ultra secret. We're at the
horticultural research station of the U of M. And there's a reason for such secrecy is because
the U of M is actually a leader when it comes to cool season grapes. So we're not at a vineyard,
we're not at a winery. And roughly around here, there's about 12,000 different individual
varieties of grapes. They plant a lot every year, and they're just doing all these crosses
and making all these little grapes that will survive the winter. The ones behind us,
these are from Europe. They're going to be toast in the winter. They bury them and all that kind
of stuff. So that's the stage. Now let's get to how we actually, Minnesota actually got here.
Joining me this morning is Seung Lee Tae. He is the program leader of all this research that
goes on out here for the year. So how do we get to this point? Yeah, so Dale, the University of
Minnesota Fruit Breeding Program has been in existence for over 120 years. And at the beginning,
we were just scratching our head, asking the questions, what can we grow in Minnesota type
of winters and shorter growing season here? So that includes apples, strawberries, blueberries,
and grapes. But fast forward to about, you know, 1980s or so, that's when we began the
modern grape breeding program with Professor Emeritus Jim Luby and also grape breeder Peter
Hempstead. And that has really led to a lot of revolution in the release of cold hardy wine
grapes. And that includes Frontenac, Marquette, La Crescent. That really revolutionized the entire
industry here. In fact, the Minnesota industry really began because of this innovation that
allowed them to grow these cold hardy wine grapes. Yeah, it seems like in the 90s, all of a sudden,
there was this big spring of wineries and then wine tasting. It's super Instagrammable. It's an
experience. But prior to the University of Minnesota, I think really wine up in this neck
of the woods was like mouthwash. I mean, it was, you know, you guys have done so much. What were some
of the first grapes that, you mentioned La Crescent, right? Or which ones were the first? Yeah, the first
wine grapes that were released by the program is actually called Frontenac. And I have here with us
that we can taste and we pour here. This is the red wine was released in 1996. And it's really
quite a good grapes. And of course, there are some flaws that comes with it. You know, the acid level
is a little high, but it really makes a really nice presentable wine. The vine itself is very
robust. It can be grown. It's produced reliably year to year. So cheers. Is there a special way
to taste? I know some people's. Yeah, so we obviously start with visual. We look at the
wine itself and look at the colors. Is there any off colors? And then we then start with the nose.
So I know beer, they put beer in chilled glasses. Do we? Wines no chilled glass, right? Well, for
red wine, you know, it's sort of served at a temperature that's cooler than that's warmer
than normal. Oh, that's that's really good. So tell me a little bit about so you're sending
all this technology, you're producing all these great vines for wineries. What's happening next
week as far as for the Arboretum? What event is happening at international judging? Yeah,
so next week is a very spectacular and important event. It is an international competition. It's
as the name suggests. It is a competition that encompasses internationally. So we have wineries
from Canada even submitting samples to this particular competition. It is whoever that grows
cold hardy wine grapes that wants to have their wine evaluated and see whether or not they will
win some medals. And so we have all the way from bronze medal, silver medal, gold, double gold,
best in class for a specific variety and all the way to the highest level called governance cup.
This is really a recognition that wineries can really be proud about the achievement and they
can use it in their publicity, in their winery itself. And it's really a competition that we've
been ongoing for the past at least 15 years or so. Okay, and that's happening next Wednesday,
July 15th at the Arboretum. So there's all this kind of backstory to how cool season grapes are
produced. Because of course, in California, the climate is so much nicer in Australia,
France, all those kind of big regions. But the University of Minnesota is really,
really drilling down. You saw the the bags earlier, they're doing cross upon cross upon
cross. It is no jokes aside, it is actually quite proprietary. Because they want to get those things
to market just like Honeycrisp and just like some of the great other innovation that the University
of Minnesota has done over the years. Now I was I should tell you a true story. I was in Nebraska
not that long ago. And I was at a little winery and the wine there, by crikey, it was it was it
was gone awful. This is really good. And this is I'm going to give you a little tip. I'm going to
give you a little tip. This is how we do it in Australia. This is an Australian sangria. We just
mix. We don't muck around with the white and the red. We just mix the two together. It's the Aussie
sangria. And then you tip it back. Give it a give it a whirl. Tip that baby. No, mix it. All right.
Just for the engagement. Teaching the teaching the leader how it's done. With that,
we'll send it back to you. Oh, cheers. He just lost a bit of his soul. Oh, man,
Dale, you got to watch that back. Oh, yeah, absolutely not. He ain't he ain't having it
one little bit. Nope. All right. Thanks. Good. Yeah. Is that really? I don't think so.
All right. We'll be right back. There's the news. One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock,
five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock rock, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock rock. We're
going to rock around. Yeah, we are on this day. Seventy one years ago, back in nineteen fifty
five. How about that number one song? First rock and roll tune to top the charts brought the new
music genre into the mainstream. Later, it was used as the theme song for the first two seasons
of Happy Days. Of course, it was. Yeah. All right. This weekend, you can tour some of Hennepin
County's most stunning gardens while getting expert advice. The Learning Garden Tour highlights
10 gardens at private residences across Bloomington, Edina, Minneapolis and Richfield.
Now, this one you're looking at is in Minneapolis. Now, the homeowner calls it eclectic.
She has native plants in the front yard. You're seeing there tons of veggies in the backyard,
but also a water feature with koi. Each stop on the tour is at the home of a master gardener
volunteer, meaning these stops are more than just pretty gardens. They're learning opportunities.
We are about bringing science based university research to the general public. So we have
master gardeners in every garden. Anybody can come up and ask a question that they may have.
There's also education stations at each garden. So each garden has a different kind of learning
opportunity or component to it. It may be about container gardening, gardening on a budget,
cut flowers, just a variety of things that may be of interest to the public.
That house also has a bee lawn that they installed, which is interesting to learn about. Okay,
here's another stop. This one is in Richfield. The homeowner there started with raised gardens,
garden beds for vegetables and pollinator friendly plants. But over time, you can see
she redesigned it to be a cut flower garden. Now, to get these full blooms early in the summer,
she has to start growing from seed well before the ground thaws. I start somewhere in the
neighborhood of 5,000 plants in my house. On January 2nd, I start the seeds for these
lisianthus. They take a very long time to grow from seeds to full maturity. So you have to like
make sure they maintain a very consistent moisture level through their germination phase,
but also not waterlogged them. So it's like I'm checking morning and evening every single day
from January 2nd on until it becomes a pretty mature little plant. It's difficult to grow
roses in Minnesota's climate. And so lisianthus is a big full flower that can really kind of sub
in as a local substitute for roses. They're gorgeous. If you have the fortitude and the
patience to grow them, they are just wonderful. That's really fascinating learning about the cut
flower garden. Okay, the learning garden tour is on Saturday. It's from 830 to 430. Tickets are
10 bucks in advance or 20 on the day of the tour. You can learn more. Hennepinmastergardeners.org
is the spot, but they're all really varied. And then same, you're getting city gardens,
so you don't have tons of space. They use their space really efficiently. I think that's really
fascinating too because I feel like I'm like, oh, I want to cut flower garden so I can have
fresh flowers. And I'm like, just kidding. I'll just go support the people who can do this and
have the dedication for it. All right, here's something you need to check out this weekend.
Extreme Race Day is back at Canterbury Park. Yep, you notice that horses didn't come out of
the chute there. So in between the horse races, you'll have camel, ostrich, and zebras taking
the track. Races start at 110. Are the same jockeys on those? I mean, you have to know what
you're doing. That's not just like, who wants to try? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yes. Stop it. Okay. I
didn't realize people rode the ostrich. Oh my goodness. Maybe I should have known that. Okay.
I haven't seen an ostrich race before. All right, coming up tomorrow, a special behind the scenes
look at what it takes to make a massive show like Wicked come to life. Pretty impressive stuff.
Lauren Andrego is getting a rare opportunity to fulfill maybe a lifetime dream. Should we
say that? She even has a special outfit. She does. So that is tomorrow. If that's not a tease,
I don't know what is. Thanks for watching. Good day.
Now, here's Jason.
Okay. It's almost like you work in radio. I know. Welcome to The Jason Show. I'm Falun.
I'm Pierre. Good to be back. What you missed before the show started was Pierre doing a
full-on Pitbull dance routine. He knows all the choreography to Pitbull's Fireballs. Great song.
Impossible not to dance to that song. Leslie Miller's already here setting up.
She's going to be on later. She said, oh, you're definitely ready for fatherhood. I
guess the Pitbull is the sign that you know what you're doing for fatherhood. I'm dancing
and embarrassing everyone around me at the same time. I'm absolutely ready for fatherhood. I love
it. I love it. Earlier this week, I think it was Monday, you revealed you hate something.
I do. Yes. There are great many things that I hate, but we'll narrow it down here to just a
single thing. Pickles. Not a fan of pickles. Never understood it. Doesn't taste good to me
at all. I know so many of you love it. Great. I'm not here to try to change your mind, but
at the same time, don't love the pickle. Bad news. This is a pickle-centric show today in The Jason
Show. Lots of pickle taste testing will be happening. Coincidence or just to traumatize
you? I think a little bit of both. The wine diva, Leslie Miller, is going to be joining us later on.
I'm indebted to her at this point for all the smack that I've talked. This is going to serve
as a little bit of payback for me. I know already I'm going to be trying all the pickle-related
drinks later on, even though, again, don't care. Not your favorite. We've been talking about how
Pierre is about to become a new dad. I thought, let's go through a few scenarios that a lot of
parents deal with and see how you would handle these situations. You can't wait for this. You
got to prepare. You got to be ready. Your baby has a blowout in the middle of a store that doesn't
sell baby supplies. You forgot the diaper bag. Pierre, what do you do? Cry. Immediately.
Immediately just wilt on the floor and hope the problem just magically goes away.
That's a terrible, terrible solution. I hope you have a better answer for me. I eagerly await what
you think. I mean, I just kind of have to leave at that point. Well, yeah, I'll be doing that.
They'll leave the cart for dead. I forgot the diaper bag. Now, I will say I did that once,
but I was sleep deprived, right? Sure. And I had been waiting in line for donuts for like,
I'm not kidding, for like 15 minutes that I'm holding her and this happens. And I was like,
probably like five back in line at that point. I was like, I don't care. I'm waiting in line.
Wow. That was disgusting of me. Was was the donut worth it? Do you remember?
I don't remember. It was like a vacation. We went to Martha's Vineyard and I was exhausted.
She didn't sleep. They say vacations are no longer vacations. When you have kids,
they're just trips with kids. So keep that in mind. I haven't heard that one. I have to be
honest. Yeah. Well, get ready. Your partner dressed your baby in an outfit you don't like.
Do you change the outfit? Absolutely not. You think I'm going to dip my hand in that bear
trap right there? I am a lot smarter than that. If she dressed him the way she wants him to be
dressed. Now I, she, she knows me well enough to know that if she dresses him in a certain,
like maybe certain things, I'd be like, no, no, no. Like, come on. Let's we're, we're not doing
this. What if it was like a opposing sports team to the team that you like? Oh, absolutely not.
Absolutely. That's probably where I have some pushback is in the sporting department. There's
no chance a son of mine is going to be dressed in any Lakers gear whatsoever. Not a chance in
the world. No, no, absolutely not. Okay. If you're desperately hungry, Pierre, would you eat a
spoonful of baby food? That's an interesting question. What kind of baby food are we talking
about? Are we talking about just like, um, like the, um, mashed up fruit or whatever it is you
serve them? I'm not above it. I might do it if I'm desperately hungry. I noticed I didn't ask
you about breast milk because that was, I don't know, like people, some people will try it out of
curiosity, but I didn't ask you about that. I will tell you right now, I used to dabble in baby food
bananas. Okay. Because it was delicious. Honestly, I don't, it's not like it's gross food. It's not
you're giving me something that's just, Oh my God, there's no way I would absolutely taste that.
Like if it was a pickle. Uh, no, if it was like all they had were like a, it was like the smashed
split pea. I'd be like, absolutely. I'll just go hungry. Pass. It depends on my mood that day,
but I'm not above it. I will say that. All right, here we go. If your baby's first word is mama,
are you going to be jealous? No, no. Why, why would I be jealous? I mean, I listen, I think deep
down, even though I am a first time dad, so I'm not speaking from any type of experience at all.
I don't know how I've, there's a part of me that feels like, I think I might want him to love his
mom just a little bit more than me. So I'm okay with it. I do think that that's how the ratio
will be with her love between you and the baby. Just a little bit more for that baby. Just a
little bit more. I'm okay with it. Oh, you're better than I am. If Olive had said dad at first,
I'd have been like, well, we're down. I'll see you on the weekend. I do wonder if it was, if we
were having a girl and say, if we had a girl instead of a boy first, if the girl said dada
first before mama, I think she probably would not be very happy about that. Okay. What do you do
if your baby spits up on a friend, immediately apologize, offer to clean the clothes and buy
them a new wardrobe. So extreme. Listen, I, I have to, I have to offer a mea culpa. I mean,
this is, you know, nobody, nobody likes to be spit up on. Definitely wash the clothes. Hey,
can I wash that for you, please? Let me do that. Take it off right now. I'll clean it for you right
now. No problem. Let's go to the laundromat immediately. Listen, if you're going to hold
a new baby, just like make, put it, put a rag down. It could happen. Okay. Yeah. It's on them
too. Yeah. I think, you know what to expect when you have a newborn. I think it comes with
these, a little bit of understanding of what may occur when you're holding a newborn. Agreed. Yeah.
Your next question. Cause Pierre is having a baby soon. His wife is let's be clear. Yeah.
Your baby calms down to music. You do not like, so it's not Pitbull. Okay. Do you keep playing it?
Oh, that's a, that's a really tough one. Um, that is a really tough one. For example,
off the top of my head, your baby's favorite artist is John Mayer. Oh my God. No, no. Listen,
listen. No, no. That gets changed immediately. No, no. Wait. Now baby's screaming and crying.
You can't get that baby to calm down until you put John Mayer back on. Listen, kid,
we all don't get what we want. Lesson number one, you just learned it the hard way. We don't always
get what we want all the time. So John Mayer out, out. Okay. I learned yesterday that Pierre hates
John Mayer, which is crazy. One of my favorites. Okay. Will you take your newborn to sit down
restaurant? This is, I, I love this question because I, we could probably do the next two
segments on this question. This is a, this is a tough one. I have actually had this conversation
with my wife because I'm a little afraid to do that because if you go out to a restaurant,
I think most people are going out to a restaurant, just trying to relax and unwind and enjoy a good
time. The last thing you want to hear is a crying baby. So I'm sensitive to other people's nights
out and what they want to do with their time. And I don't want to be that guy or those parents that
ignores the crying baby and ruins everybody else's time. But I also was told in the first,
and you would know this in the first, you know, three, four, five months, a lot of times they
just sit there and sleep. They don't really make a lot of noise. So we'll, I'll definitely test it
out, but don't think for a second to all you people who want to go out and have a nice dinner.
I'm not insensitive to what you want to try to accomplish on that night. So I will do my best
to make sure the kid's quiet. Okay. So I'm going to give you, this is a piece of advice I received
early on, um, which was do not change your life and your schedule on around the baby. The baby
needs to adapt to your schedule. And now what I mean by that is the baby needs a schedule. They,
like all kids, everyone, we all function well with a schedule, right? But they were like,
if you change your life completely and you never go to restaurants anymore and never do that,
it's a disservice to the kid too, because they don't learn how to act in like a public setting
like that. Absolutely. I agree with you. No one wants, if you're a nice dinner. So maybe you start
out at like a Texas roadhouse first, no problem there. And you because, and then there, it gets
like levels of judgment too. Like we're very much like all of his been going since she was little
and we're like a crayons and paper. A lot of parents do the iPad at the restaurant and people
get very judgy, but that's the way those parents get like a little bit of time and their kid isn't
bothering anyone. So I can see both sides of that, but they say to bring them to the restaurant,
but don't let your kids run free because the waitstaff don't need to be moving and dodging
around your head. Well, now I already know that our first night out of dinner is going to be a
Texas roadhouse and Falun is invited. Absolutely. Oh my God. It's my dream restaurant. I will come.
I will gladly be going to a Texas roadhouse any day of the week. Absolutely. Babies, kids,
everybody's invited. I think you're going to do well. I think you're going to do well. Get that
maybe I'll put it on her playlist in the delivery room. No doubt about it. We can absolutely have
what a way to welcome a kid into the world. A little baby could call Mr. Worldwide, Mr. 305.
All right. We're going to come back with your hot dish coming up next. Mr. 305. Hi, I'm Stephanie.
Waiting for the claps to end and welcome back. Welcome back. I get it. Like when it's loud,
you want to hear, but all I'm really saying is welcome back. I gotta be honest, but welcome back
today. It's time for today's hot dish.
We do start today with some sad news in the world of music. 80s icon Bonnie Tyler died this morning
at the age of 75 following complications from surgery back in May. She had been in a coma,
but woke up last month. Tyler is best known for her chart topping hit from 1983.
It's nothing I can do. A total eclipse of the heart.
Absolutely. Totally clips of the heart. Spent four weeks at number one in the U.S.
selling more than 13 million copies worldwide. That's so sad. I didn't know that she'd had
complications with her surgery, placing her in a coma. That one always makes me think of
the movie Old School. You know what I'm talking about? Of course I do. With Will Ferrell. Yep.
One of my favorites. And the wedding band they have where they change the lyrics. There are a
lot of cussing moments in it. It's very, very funny. A classic moment. Sad to see.
Up next could be rough seas ahead for Disney's latest live action movie. Moana opens Friday
with Dwayne Johnson back as Maui and reviews are out and they are real bad. Yeah. The Associated
Press says the live action Moana is a lifeless carbon copy of an animated classic. Yikes.
It's not good. The Telegraph says Disney's awful Moana could have been made by a chat GPT prompt.
And I think I sent like this one over to Jeff. There are some positive reviews. Variety says
Moana is the first Disney live action remake that works. It's 100%. Wow. That feels like an
extremely different thing. Okay. The movie currently has a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
That is not good. I, you know, as you clearly stated in the first segment, I'm not a parent
yet, so I didn't go out of my way to see Moana. Did you see Moana, the original one? Absolutely.
It is one of the best Disney movies. Really? I actually thought Moana 2 was unnecessary. Okay.
And then they did the, they're doing this. And what I was saying to Jason, I think it was like
last week or the week before, I feel like a lot of the live actions worked because even if you
didn't like them, at least the timing worked because it had been so long since that movie
came out. Sure. I don't feel like enough time has passed that we need a live action of this.
And then there are some issues. We were all a little taken aback by the rock with the wig.
And also the first previews that came out, I don't know if you remember this, but Maui didn't have
nips and people were really weirded out by that. I don't know if they fixed those in post,
okay. But it was like, he should have those unless a demigod doesn't, I guess. So, um,
anyway, I have a hard time saying anything bad about Dwayne Johnson. That's my guy.
Can't really say too many bad things about him. My husband has a crush as well. Uh,
sticking with movies, we're getting a new look at an upcoming third and final movie in the
Dune series. Jeff couldn't even hold his disgust. Uh, the latest trailer has more sandworms, dust,
of course, Zendaya. How does it feel to be Paul Atreides? No fear today through dishonor and
Atreides. Forgive me for all I've done. Timothée Chalamet, Jason Momoa, and Robert Pattinson. Oh
my gosh, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are in every movie. They star in the movie. It opens
December 18th, the same day as the next Avengers movie. Now you said you saw the first two, so I
can contribute to this. I definitely can. I enjoyed the first one. I thought the first one was pretty
good. Really liked the first one. The second one, I don't even remember much about it because it
was such a slog. Um, it felt slow and I couldn't really keep up with it. It definitely did not
have me excited for a third movie. So I'm not really sure if I'm going to go back for the third
movie. However, after watching that trailer, I am intrigued, I will admit. Okay, so it's the,
is it the final installation? I believe so. I'm pretty sure it is. Oh, Bjorn's like, I don't know.
I rely on him to let me know these things. My husband likes these movies. I'm sure he'll see
it. As someone who played one year of recreational sand volleyball, might I just state that it was
one of the worst experiences of my life because it was so hot and there was sand was in crevices
I didn't know my body had. Right. And I didn't like dragging that into my house. Now to imagine
my entire world is that sand volleyball league. It sounds awful. It doesn't seem like a place
I'd want to be. I wonder if they're gonna play volleyball in the movie. Zendaya would be a
killer. She'd be so good. Isn't she pretty tall? I think for a gal, she's tall, right? Yeah,
I think so. All right. Next up, just when you thought we'd heard the last of the Blake Lively
and Justin Baldoni battle. No, no, no. Justin's like, wait, wait, wait. You haven't heard it from
me yet. Baldoni is speaking out about the years long legal battle, sharing a message with his
wife on instagram. So we have not spoken publicly for the better part of the last two years. And
it's not because we haven't had anything to say because the Lord knows we have. But it just felt
like every time we went to make a video like this, we wanted to speak. Something was telling
us not to. It just didn't feel like the right time. There have been so many painful things that
have been spoken into existence. Untruthful. Over the last couple years. And that created so much
noise and we didn't want to add to the noise. So we just wanted to let the justice system
run its course. And the truth and the facts have spoken for themselves.
In the nearly five minute video, Baldoni's wife hinted that they will have more to say on the
lawsuit battle. But for now they're focusing on being a family. I'm going to guess I wouldn't
doubt it if they were trying to write some kind of book about this, but I don't know what the
legality is behind it to allow and also not want to get into another lawsuit with Blake Lively.
We said this from the very beginning. I don't think anyone is coming out of this unscathed.
I think both of them are. I mean, it's bad news and I don't think either of them are innocent.
I think.
