Deadly officer-involved shooting

Dale's woman and her boyfriend are dead after a shooting outside of a business in Auburndale. Investigators believe the boyfriend ambushed the woman when she showed up for work at Spectrum off of U.S. Highway 92. And as Fox 13's Carla Byron tells us, officers shot and killed the man after they say he pointed the gun at them. Ladies and gentlemen, if there's ever been a classic suicide by cop, this is it. Shortly after 9 a.m., Auburndale police and Polk County deputies responded to the parking lot of Spectrum off of U.S. Highway 92 West after they received a 9-1-1 call that someone had taken their own life. They found a 20-year-old woman dead from gunshot wounds near her vehicle. They also found 39-year-old Derek Braithwaite laying on the ground, also hurt with a gun in his hand. When you have somebody with such determination that they're laying there after having shot our victim, manipulating the handgun and what we think was an attempt to clear malfunction on the handgun and then pointing his firearm at our officers. We don't know if he shot at our officers just yet. That's still under investigation. But he pointed that firearm at our officers and deputies and they shot him. They shot him a lot. Afterwards, life-saving measures were performed, but the suspect and victim both died from their injuries. Sheriff Grady Judd says the two were in an ongoing relationship and shared a young child. Though why the shooting happened is still under investigation. We are told and I underscore we are told we haven't run all this to ground that he said yesterday he threatened his girlfriend, they're not married, this victim, our 20-year-old victim, I'm going to kill you and then kill myself. Sheriff Judd says the victim works for Spectrum as a customer service agent. He adds Braithwaite had a long criminal history with 31 previous felony arrests. It was obviously dangerous. He proved it today. He murdered the mother of a beautiful three-year-old child today and shot himself and then pointed the guns at us so we could finish the job that he started on himself. In Auburndale, Carla Byron, Fox 13 News. Now as part of standard procedure, a task force from the 10th judicial circuit is investigating the officer's actions in this shooting. The five officers and two deputies who fired their weapons are on administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation.
