Video Summary
AI GeneratedPaul and his team hosted a comprehensive drag racing tournament featuring approximately 20 dual-cab pickup trucks. By grouping vehicles by power-to-weight ratios and testing them in rainy conditions, the competition aimed to identify the best-performing ute for the money, ultimately highlighting the shift from traditional combustion engines to modern hybrid power.
G'day, I'm Paul.
We are doing the biggest dual-cab ute, bucky pickup truck, whatever you want to call it,
test.
We're going off-road, we're doing some towing, and today is all about drag racing to figure
out which one of these pickup trucks is the fastest for your money.
And to help me do this, I have the boys from CarSource.
They're going to help do the drag race, plus Max as well, and hopefully we won't stuff
any of it up.
So, we're going to get behind the wheel and figure out which one of these you should buy
if you want the fastest pickup truck.
Okay, so how is this going to work?
So, kind of kept it as simple as we can.
We've broken up all of our dual-cab utes, there's like 20 of them in total, into groups
of four, and then there will be a final group that drag races to figure out which is fastest.
The winner from each category will go into the next group.
They're all broken up by power to weight, which means that they all should be pretty
similar in terms of their pace across the finish line, and it'll be our final group
that gets a straight-line drag race and then a rolling race as well.
Then at the end of the video, I'm just going to leave the times up on the screen from our
acceleration runs that we've done, just so you can get a very good idea of exactly how
fast they are with the exact same driver, exact same conditions, same day, and all that
sort of stuff.
Righto, so I'm here in the Ranger Super Duty, and you might be thinking, why is that in
the lowest group?
Well, according to the stats, it is the slowest, or it should be the slowest, so 600 newton
metres of torque, yes, but it weighs like almost 2.7 tonnes before you put accessories
on it, so this has a tray and a couple of other sort of bits and pieces, so it is a
heavy old thing.
Max, you're over there in the Jack, the Mighty Jack, how much power are you playing with?
Probably not quite as much as that, at least torque-wise, there's a piece of paper here
that I haven't really bothered to read, and it is less than that actually, but I think
it really comes down to the driver, so we could be in for some surprises, I reckon.
Righto, mate.
Matt from CarSource, welcome, you found yourself onto the wrong channel, but that's okay, you
can stay here for a little bit.
What are you driving?
Just wanted to bring the expert into car expert.
I'm in the GWM Canon, it's got a 2.4 litre turbo diesel with a respectable 135 kilowatt
of power and 480 newton metres of torque, so I think I'm in a good position.
Alright, and right up the back there with Jacob, what are you driving?
Mate, I'm driving the MG U9, and I'm hoping that the U in U9 means under nine seconds
to 100, because I think I'm going to be going flat out.
I'm playing with a bigger turbo diesel, 2.5 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, 160 kilowatts
of power, but a boatload of torque, 520 newton metres.
Nice, okay, well, what we're going to do is basically stick these cars into their fastest
modes, the Ranger has, well, even if it did have a mode, it wouldn't help, but it is just
normal.
Guys, if you have sport modes, engage them, and then, if you're ready, I think we are
all good to be counted in.
Launching on go, in three.
Oh, nice.
Oh, a bit of wheel spin, come on.
Oh, good start.
Oh, we've had a solid launch, but the Canon's off, and he's had a better shift.
Not nice.
I'm getting flogged.
Oh, it's not too bad, actually.
Oh, I'm falling behind.
No.
Can't believe it.
You know what?
At least I've still got the super duty.
Oh, no.
I'm getting beaten by everything.
Oh, dear.
I did not think it would be that bad, but that was actually surprising.
MG?
I don't know, what happened there?
Is that a driver thing?
Honestly, I don't know what happened there.
I reckon it was all car.
So, who actually won that?
Was that the Canon or the Jack?
Well, well, well.
I think we know who won that, and it was, of course, the GWM Canon driven by the expert,
Matt.
Right-o, mate.
All right, so you will be progressing into the next round with that, so you can stay
in your trusty steed, and then we'll bring out the next contenders.
Okay, round two.
Let's turn this up a notch.
So, the GWM continues into this round.
I've jumped into the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Trailmaster.
It's a bit of a mouthful.
Now, you might be wondering, hold on, isn't that a six-cylinder diesel?
A lot of torque, yes, 550 newton-metres.
Only thing is, because we're doing, you know, we're looking at weight here, this car weighs
over 2.7 tonnes, so it is a heavy old thing, and I think that is going to be the penalty
that it pays.
It's also on K02s, BFGoodrich K02s, which are notoriously terrible in the wet, and because
this is a Car Expert Drag Race, it is raining, of course.
So, we will see how this goes.
It has a pretty vicious launch, so I'm excited to explore that.
Max, run us through the D-Max.
Yep, so about 600Ks lighter, three-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel.
No sport mode, no four-wheel drive, no nothing like that, so we're just going to have to
do it the old-fashioned way, I suppose.
And the Victor.
Matt, you're back in the cannon to canonise us.
Look, I'm where I should be, plus I have all-wheel drive, so I feel like I'm sitting pretty here,
even if, on paper, I'm not that fast.
And Lord Jacob, how are you looking down there?
I can't even see.
Oh, you're in the Ssangyong, the mighty Korean.
Sorry, Paul, it's called KGM now, mate.
No longer Ssangyong.
They lost that honour.
But I only need two-wheel drive to win this race.
133kW of power, 420Nm of God-given torque.
My thoughts are with you.
Alright, Sean, count us in when you're ready.
Launching on go in three, two, one.
Oh, did you hear that?
Oh, come on.
It just bogged down!
It bogged down!
Yes!
Matt's bogged it.
Yeah, this thing is absolutely hauling.
Mind you, that D-Max!
I'm way behind that D-Max, though.
But Matt is in my rear-view mirror and it feels good.
Catch you later, buddy.
Oh, my God, the D-Max!
What?
Oh, it was close.
What?
I did not expect that from the D-Max.
That is four cylinders of fury keeping up with the six-cylinder Ineos.
How do you feel, Max?
Look, it was a good effort.
The launch was actually more lively than I thought,
but I just didn't have the legs.
It was pretty even, though.
Yeah, you leave the legs to me, mate.
Jacob, how did you go?
The main thing is that Matt was in my rear-view mirror.
That's all that matters to me.
I'm going to be honest.
I bogged down.
And so there goes my all-wheel-drive theory.
Poor Matt.
Oh, well, that's all right.
You can't win them all, mate.
You've just got to keep the chin up and you'll be right.
Right-o, time for round three.
The Ineos progresses.
And then it's on to the curious-looking Kia Tasman.
Max, run us through it.
Yeah, look, I hope the camera is a little bit out of focus,
or at least I can be a bit further down so it's not as clear.
But, yeah, look, decent power figures, four-wheel-drive,
sport mode, the works.
Yeah, see what we can do.
That's probably the key thing as well,
that you've got four-wheel-drive auto in that,
and a lot of dual-cab Utes in this segment don't have that,
so it means that you should get decent traction,
especially on those sort of meatier all-terrains.
Matt, what are you in?
It looks like a Triton, but it's not.
I'm just starstruck by sitting next to Sid the Sloth over here.
Yeah, this is the new, I was about to say Triton,
it's the Navara, though.
And I've got to say, it's got an interesting powertrain,
another 2.4 litre, this time twin-turbo'd,
with 150 kilowatt of power and 470 newton-metres of torque.
Also, it's got permanent four-wheel-drive,
just like that Tasman,
except instead of calling it Super Select,
they just call it Super.
It's totally different to the Triton, then.
And, look, I wouldn't call him a Super Sloth,
I'd just call him Jacob, or the Boss, as he likes to be known.
Do you want to run us through the Boss BT50?
Look, I'm glad you guys can read,
because, as you can see, that's what I am.
I'm a bloody Boss in my BT50,
and this thing has a pretty well-known powertrain, the 4JJ3,
and, to be honest, based on how well the D-MAX did last time,
I'm pretty confident.
Well, and that's also light as well,
because Boss, it's basically like a poverty pack,
and then they've sort of put a few stick,
or just one sticker on each side.
But it should mean that it has punch, it's light,
so I think you've got a good chance here.
So, alright, Sean, count us in.
Launching on go in 3, 2, 1, go.
Oh, nice.
I love the little angle this kicks up on.
Go.
Why am I wheel-spinning?
Yeah, we got him.
We got the Navara.
Oh, the Tasman's pulling away.
The Tasman's pulling away.
Oh, no, not by a Tasman.
What?
No, not by a Tasman.
Come on.
I'm also slowing down.
Everyone's speeding up.
Come on.
Yes, come on.
No way.
What?
I just did not expect that.
I got a really good launch as well.
Beaten by that thing.
That is unbelievable.
Absolute ripper launch there and then massive lock-up on the brakes at the very end,
but that was awesome.
I'm certain that thing is under-quoted in terms of its power output
because there is no way it should be as quick as it is.
That is phenomenally good.
What about the back of the pack?
How did you guys go with your motley crew of dual cabs?
I thought I had a really bloody good launch.
I'm glad I got the Navara, but, wow, that Tasman just pulled away.
I made the grave error of not using the super system
and instead I used two-wheel drive thinking it would be faster,
and, of course, I just wheelspun.
Well, just because I didn't come first,
should we do that one more time just to be on the safe side?
Yes, yes, please.
I think Jacob agrees as well.
I'm sure there will be an excuse there.
So this is technically three onto one, so let's do that one more time.
All right, one more time.
This time Matt will be in for super duper.
All right, Sean, count us in.
Launching on go in three, two, one, go.
Oh, what?
OK, not as good that time.
Come on.
Oh, here we go.
We have a different world order.
No, I'm coming last.
Come on, Tasman.
Oh, Matt's still falling behind.
Hey, I'm ahead of everyone now.
No, no.
Oh, this sucks.
This absolutely sucks.
Oh, this is bloody close.
Oh, yeah, baby.
What happened?
I don't understand how that all completely changed.
I went from being like second-ish to last.
Maybe you're running low on fuel, Paul.
Yes, have you seen how much it costs?
So hold on, who won?
Was it the D-Max?
You mean the boss, the BT-50 boss?
I think that might be a little sus.
I don't know, best of three, surely.
OK, we need to go to our adjudicator.
Igor, did we all leave at the same time?
Three, two, one, go.
Two, one, go.
Revealing the footage, the boss...
Those are bullying me on my own channel.
I think, in theory, we need to have a decider now, don't we?
I think it's only fair, maybe the Navara will win this time.
OK, we're going to do one last run.
All right, clean starts.
These silly car expert boys, they don't know how to make a video.
All right, Sean, count us in.
Jump there.
That's better.
OK, now Matt jumped the start.
There's no way.
I can't believe the Tasman is so fast.
Oh, that's so much better.
That Tasman is unbelievable.
Look at it go.
Come on.
Where is he? He's nowhere.
Oh, my God.
OK, Tasman's just clearly pulled ahead.
Yes.
And there it is.
All right, I think we have a winner now.
I'll be honest, it looked like Matt jumped the start that time.
Not that it helped him.
Hey, sorry to interrupt the drag race.
These would not be possible without our amazing sponsors.
Do you own a ute?
Do you need to keep your stuff protected?
You might have the quickest ute on the market,
but if you park it in your driveway overnight or leave it on the street,
your gear could disappear even quicker.
The Ute Master Centurion keeps it locked away.
No exposed key barrels, no obvious weak points,
and it locks straight off the factory key fob.
It's also designed to keep out water and dust properly.
Sealing systems, drainage channels, optional vent kits,
because nobody wants thousands of dollars worth of gear
getting soaked or covered in red dust.
Especially if you've got tools, camera gear,
or anything expensive that you want to keep protected.
That looks absolutely unreal.
Head to the Ute Master website for more details
or scan the QR code on the screen.
Moving on to the next round, I have, I was going to say upgraded,
maybe sidestepped from a Grenadier into the new Hilux.
So, you know, I've said this a thousand times
if you've watched our Hilux reviews,
this is, they claim it's a new generation of car,
but it's technically just a bit of a carryover,
which not so much a bad thing,
because the last one did a perfectly good job.
So that means it has a really punchy diesel 2.8 litre.
It's got 500 newton metres of torque
and it doesn't weigh all that much.
We're talking about 2,000, just over 2,000 kilos.
So it is significantly lighter than a lot of the dual cab Utes here.
So having 500 newton metres of torque, 150 kilowatts of power,
it is enough to get it moving.
So I've got it in sport mode. We'll see how that goes.
Max, you're in the Tasman, carryover from last time around.
What is that forest green thing over there, Matt?
You know, Paul, I like my engines how I like my milk.
Three litres.
So I'm in the Volkswagen Averrock
and, yeah, this thing has a big three litre turbo diesel
with 184 kilowatts, 600 newton metres.
Yeah, this thing is a big boy.
You must get a bit of a sore tummy if you're having that much milk.
And then next to you is kind of a sort of kissing cousin of the Averrock.
Look, we like to make fun of the popular Utes, don't we?
This is probably one of the best selling engines ever.
A three litre V6.
This thing is pretty fast.
I think I'm going to beat the Averrock.
OK, well, you guys all have one up on me
because you've all got not only, you know,
actually the Tasman doesn't have more torque,
but you've all got four wheel drive systems that work on sealed surfaces.
So I'm just going to be in rear wheel drive.
So we will see how all that goes.
So, Sean, I think you're good to count us in.
Launching on go in three, two, one.
Go.
Oh, no.
Go.
Oh, the launch is good.
The launch is good.
I think I've got a slightly better start.
Yes, come on.
No, he's pulling ahead.
What?
He's actually pulling ahead.
Nah, this is BS.
Enough there.
The Tasman.
What?
No, come on.
Oh, I'm winning.
No way.
Oh, it's between the two of us.
And Matt's going to win.
Are you serious?
God, I love winning.
Oh, that is...
I am so confused by all of that.
I just don't understand what to say.
Because I thought you guys would have been a dead heat,
but there was clearly a difference.
He just kept pulling away slightly, like edging away.
It was unbelievable.
He's on all-terrain tyres as well.
I've got highway-terrain tyres.
That's unbelievable.
I think we need to do that one more time,
because that just confuses me, that result.
I was expecting not to win.
I wasn't expecting to get flogged by that Tasman.
So, yeah, maybe let's do that one more time
just to see what happens with you two,
because I just don't understand
why there would be a difference between you two.
Looks, like good looks, does that make a difference?
Now, our cameraman Igor has just alerted me to a fact
that based on our numbers,
knowing the mass of these vehicles,
the Ranger should actually be quicker.
You're not taking into consideration
the mass of the individual that sits inside the Ranger.
Yeah, look, I'm just saying.
Launching on go in three, two, one, go.
Much better launch then.
Still getting owned by the Tasman.
What is going on here?
Oh, it's not bad again.
It's really not bad.
Come on.
It's pulling.
I'm pulling away.
Oh, he had me off the line a little bit,
and he's pulling again.
He's pulling away again.
This is insane.
What's the Ranger doing?
What's going on here?
That Tasman is like super duper charged.
No, I like snack.
Get lost.
Oh, no.
Oh, man.
He got me by like a foot.
I am so confused.
So Amarok won again.
You know what?
He got me off the line a little bit there, I think.
I think I did have just a slightly better launch,
but then in the beginning part, I was definitely pulling away,
and then it kind of equalized towards the end.
So this thing somehow is just slightly faster.
All right, well, I guess that is definitive.
Amarok is moving on to our next round.
It is time for the heavy hitters and the Jeep Gladiator.
Just because of the groupings,
it just kind of turned out this way that the Jeep is in the group here
with the mighty turbocharged V6 petrol F-150,
our winner from the last round, the Amarok,
and the plug-in hybrid.
So it's probably not going to be all that fair,
but, you know, it is what it is.
We've grouped them as well as we can, and we'll see what happens.
You never know.
The Gladiator might come through.
So as a reminder, petrol naturally aspirated V6.
It's a great sounding engine, just not a lot of torque.
We're talking about, what, 347 newton meters,
so really not a huge amount, but, you know, it is what it is.
Max, that is the facelifted F-150.
It is a big old brute, and it has a big old engine.
Yeah, this is a proper big rig.
You know, nearly 300 kilowatt, nearly 700 newton meters,
and I don't know, I'm just going to give it full throttle,
see what happens.
Yes, please just don't give it full throttle into me,
because I'll be briefly next to you.
All right, Amarok, we already know what's going on there.
Bizarrely, with less power and power to weight, it's still one.
But anyway, we'll leave that up to you guys to figure out.
And then at the end, we've got a plug-in hybrid,
which uses basically a battery and an internal combustion engine.
Jacob, walk us through it.
I'm feeling pretty good about this one, Paul.
I don't have to say nearly.
This has 300 kilowatts of power, 750 newton meters of torque.
It is pretty heavy, though, because it's got a big old battery in it,
but I do get the benefit of electricity off the line.
Sounds interesting.
All right, so I think we are ready to go.
Launching on go in three, one, go.
I got a good start, and that is about it.
Oh!
Off.
Launch control.
Oh, we're off.
The F150 is pulling away, though.
Amarok is nowhere to be found.
Hey, I'm not coming last.
That's good.
Yeah, come on.
Come on.
I think that powered away.
He's just pulling away.
Oh, that F150 is quick, my goodness.
Far out.
Come on, not even close.
Gee, I didn't think it would be that close between the GWM and the Amarok.
Matt, can you explain why you're not at the finish line with us?
That was a skill issue, just 100% on me.
I had the car in park, so, yeah.
Yeah, it's one of those things.
It's the thing between the steering wheel and the seat that got him that time.
But you guys both launched very quickly in the Canon and the F150,
but that F150, once it hooks up, my God, it is gone.
It absolutely hauls.
I mean, yeah, just not much else to say about it, really.
The Canon was putting up a fight, though.
I honestly thought it would be a bit closer than that.
Like, the F150 was amazing off the line.
All right, one more time with Sleepy Joe at the wheel there.
Hopefully, he'll put it into drive this time.
In drive.
I will come last this time.
Oh, it's a good launch.
Oh, it's too good. It's too good.
Oh, better off the line.
Oh, he's just pulling again, though.
I mean...
Oh!
Oh, hello!
It doesn't sound too bad.
It doesn't sound bad.
Ah, yes.
Oh, no chance. No chance.
Oh, no!
I have come last.
That's right. That's right. I'm faster than the Jeep.
That's annoying.
Oh, well. What's a man to do?
It's too easy. It's just too easy.
All right, that was unequivocal.
That F150 is a rocket ship.
All right, let's move on to the next round.
Okay, final race.
I've just got to give a quick shout-out to our video guys, Igor and Sean.
It has been bucketing down all day,
and they've literally been standing outside all day
to help deliver this content, so I appreciate them.
Okay, now, this is the heavy hitters.
We are now talking about the fastest,
or what should be the fastest based on power-to-weight,
and we're going to see how much influence
a plug-in hybrid like the BYD Shark has compared to these.
Now, as a reminder, this BYD Shark has a puny little engine,
literally half the size of that F150.
One-and-a-half-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine,
but it is mated to a big battery
and also an electric motor on the front axle
and an electric motor on the rear axle,
so that helps it get explosive acceleration out of the box
and give you the ability to drive this as an electric vehicle effectively.
We've already heard about the F150.
Over there is the big behemoth V8.
Matt, run us through the Chevy Silverado.
I feel fantastic right now sitting in here
with a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8,
but I'll be honest, somehow I don't think I'm going to win
with around 300 kilowatt-hour and 600 newton-metres of torque,
so there is that.
You without doubt sound the best here.
That thing sounds absolutely unreal.
Now, one that has gone from a V8 to a not-V8.
Jacob, please explain why.
Well, you know, Ram decided that the 70-year-old HEMI technology
just wasn't worth including anymore,
so they went for their new Hurricane engine.
It's an inline six-cylinder. It's a twin-turbo.
The thing is bloody wicked, 635 newton-metres of torque,
313 kilowatts, so I'm feeling pretty good.
We should also give you guys a shout-out.
I haven't done that yet.
Matt and Jacob, you're from CarSource.
You can go check out their YouTube channel if you like.
They do lots of car things.
We're always at events together but never in the same video,
so this is nice.
OK, so I'm going to put this into sport mode.
You're in sport mode in the F150.
Both the Chevy and the Ram have sport mode as well.
Let's see what happens. This will be interesting.
Oh!
Launching on go in three, two, one, go.
Oh, this is good.
Oh, this is close.
Oh, that's good.
Oh, the shark!
Oh, there's a giant huntsman on Jacob's car.
Oh!
Oh, my God, that F150 was so good off the line,
and the shark!
This is close.
Oh, yes, baby!
The shark!
What? What?
What the hell? The shark is coming through.
No way!
Yes! Yes!
Oh, yes!
Holy crap, China comes through to demolish the States.
Oh, that is crazy.
That F150 launched pretty hard off the line,
but that was about it.
Unbelievable.
I am in shock. I am in shock right now.
That, like, came back so confidently,
I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.
That is absolutely crazy, and I didn't even launch it properly.
This is on another planet.
I know when we did our drag race with the Ranger Raptor
that it was, you know, it kind of walked away from that,
but this thing has explosive acceleration,
so, all right, that was an easy win there.
I think what we need to round this out with is a rolling race.
OK, time for a rolling race now.
We're going to accelerate as close as we can to the cones,
and then we're going to punch it when we get to the cones
to see who wins, and I think that will give us
a definitive fastest dual-cab ute winner,
so, all right, three, two, one, go.
About 30 k's an hour, and let's see.
Oh!
Come on, come on!
Sounds so good.
Oh, yeah. Oh, my God, that shark is just pulling away.
Look at that. Oh, my God, it is quick.
Wow.
I'm just lost for words.
The tech in this car is outrageous.
I know those things are heavy, but they have monstrous engines.
This has this piddly little 1.5,
and to think it is that fast is just otherworldly.
Now, this is the part where I'm going to be quiet,
and you can see the timed runs to see how quick these are
with the same driver, same location.
They are slightly slower than what we've sort of timed before,
but that's because we're on our circular track
and there's a slight turn in it.
OK, so there it is.
Shark, unanimous victor here in the pick-up truck drag races.
Even without the Ford Ranger Raptor here,
the shark, I think, would have won regardless,
and that has blown me away.
So thank you, Max, for helping with the driving,
and thank you to Jacob and Matt from CarSource
for coming along and, you know, being part of this.
I think it was good fun. We should do this again.
If you did enjoy this video, please make sure you like it
and you share it with your mates, but until next time,
take it easy.
