Before the Norway-England quarterfinal, a very special watch party is happening at a pretty unique sports bar over in Sunset Park.
News 12's Rob Flax joins us with the details. Rob, how's it going?
I'm standing right now in front of the Soccer Tavern, which is an Irish-Norwegian bar here in the heart of Sunset Park, Brooklyn's Chinatown.
And in fact, this bar is so old that back when it opened 93 years ago, this whole area was known as Little Norway.
And that is the history that the owner here has been celebrating ever since he started working here back in the 80s.
Now, take a look on the inside, as in that entire time, they've been slinging stouts and football shouts supporting Team USA, Norway and Ireland.
He tells us the World Cup has been a great way to connect with people of the Norwegian descent here in our borough,
and those folks that have been traveling far and wide to get a little piece of home right here in Brooklyn to celebrate.
They have a mural to show off that unique blend of cultures that they say could have only happened here in our borough to celebrate that history.
We got to take a look before those crowds got too packed ahead of the game.
The Vikings, the Norwegian flag, the Viking boat, then the Irish bar, of course, and then the dragon for the Asian community.
So that tells our history right there.
I still love doing it after 40 years and, you know, I'll know when the time is right.
But as of now, I have no intention of retiring.
Those football fans telling us go into this bar.
It's like walking through a museum of both this area's history and the folks that have been coming to the bar for that entire time,
including the last time Norway was in a World Cup.
You can see a photo of that posted. Many of those folks celebrating in that photo still here today.
But, of course, it's not just the old timers.
The bar owners tell us they've had many folks who have discovered this hidden gem just in time for Norway's quarterfinal run in Sunset Park.
