The peonies are almost finished, but now the roses are beginning to take over, bringing fresh colour and fragrance to the garden.
Join me for a relaxed walk through my Zone 4 garden as we explore what is blooming at the end of June.
In this tour you'll see the cottage garden, the circular front garden, the fire pit area, the gravel paths, and many of my favourite shrubs, trees, and perennials. I'll also share some of the changes I've made this season and how the garden is developing.
I hope this tour gives you inspiration for your own garden, whether you're growing in a cold climate or simply enjoy beautiful ornamental gardens.

Hello, my name is Katrin and welcome to my June garden. I garden in zone 4 and I wanted to say
big thanks to my subscribers. You are very welcome. What we're going to look at today?
We're going to look at my French garden, my lavender and roses. Lavender and rose combination
I think is working out with few question marks. Then we'll have a look at my chicken coop garden
and my grain dryer. This little edge over there. Then we will have a look at my front garden.
What's blooming here? What's new in my front garden? Peonies of course are almost done. Few
are still blooming but mostly they are done. Then we will have a look at my cottage garden.
As I said, peonies are done but delphiniums and foxgloves are blooming. Then we'll go to
the side garden where also my roses are blooming with delphiniums. Then we'll have a look at my
firebed garden. I have some roses over there also in bloom and some salvias. Then my long border
also has few things blooming. Then I will show you my very last addition or the very last
garden bed I made last year and how I filled it up this year. So come along and let's have a look.
As I said, let's start here at my French garden. Now in my French garden, if you don't know yet,
this door will be sealed. We're going to open up a door over here, double side doors.
On each side I want to install some sort of a water feature against the wall. There will be
some climbers climbing on the wall and some columnar evergreens. Over here on two sides,
two on one side and two on the other side. Here in the front of this grain dryer, this building
is an old grain dryer. Now we use it as a garage. On each side, I have left side and right side
and I have two symmetrical garden beds. What I have there on each side, I have a
willow tree and underneath it I have four roses. I will put the name on the screen because I can't
Odin, I think something. Then I have a giant catmint. Then on each side, each symmetrical bed
is boxed with evergreen hedge. Now it's very young at the moment, but
it will create a nice low hedge over there. In front of it, I have a bench and two pots,
which at the moment are empty. I'm going to plant here some also an evergreen because in my zone 4
garden, winter interest is very important. I'm going to plant here some round evergreens
for winter interest. I'm really happy with these roses at the moment. If you followed
me since spring, then you remember that I cut them back quite hard. Usually that's
how it goes with zone 4. I have to cut back really hard my roses anyway because
everything that's above the snow dies out, but I think they are doing very well.
This bed is actually performing exactly how I want it to perform. I wanted this nepeta
and roses to grow together so that I have this purple-blue
mass mixed with these pink roses. I think it's very cute. Now I'm still debating,
maybe I should actually replace this nepeta with lavender. Lavender is also doing great
in my garden, but the problem is lavender is not blooming yet. Still, it's the end of June
and it's not blooming for me, but this nepeta is blooming already since the beginning of
June. It does flop a little bit, but I don't actually mind. It flops a little bit and this
center here already sends out new shoots and they will come and start to bloom as well.
I kind of like the way it cascades and grows together with roses, but I'm kind of still
thinking maybe lavender would be better because, I don't know, it doesn't feel like French
with this catmint. If you have time and you have thoughts, let me know in comments what you think.
I'm kind of not sure. I am happy with it in that sense that it provides a ton of color.
Blues and pinks, I think it's a nice combination, but it feels a little bit too wild for French
garden. Now I was thinking to dig a trench over here, add some soil and plant lavender over here.
Maybe that will help with this French feel I'm looking for. So that's the story with my French
garden and same thing on this side. Gorgeous combination, but it kind of feels too much
cottagey to me. I tried to add this arborvitae over here, one, two, three, four, again to create
this symmetrical, formal feel for French garden. But yeah, if you have a few minutes, leave a
comment, let me know what you think. Is it okay? Does it feel like French? Or I should replace them with lavender?
I don't really actually want to do that because lavender doesn't bloom for me yet. So I don't know.
It's still debating. So let's have a look at my narrow grain dryer bed. Now Virginian creeper
against the wall is still not doing what I want it to do. It is a little bit better. You can see
new growth that is kind of sticking to the wall and maybe later it will still climb.
But everything else is doing fine. Now this place doesn't get a lot of sun. It is facing east and
now it's around two o'clock, three o'clock and it's in full shade. But my hostas, Empress Wu,
is doing great. And roses that I planted last year for a little bit color over here,
they are doing their job. This one is Purple Rain, if I remember it correctly.
So this area is doing okay. My hydrangeas that I cut back hard on each side of my
white spruce pendula, weeping white spruce, are doing great, flushing up. And as I said,
my white spruce, weeping white spruce, put up a ton of growth this year.
So let's have a look at my chicken coop garden. Now in my chicken coop garden, this area is the
saddest at the moment because I had a lamb's ear over there, but it kind of grew out too much.
And these bloom spikes I didn't like much and I cut it back all the way to the ground. So we'll
see what happens. And these catmints, smaller varieties that I had here everywhere, they kind
of struggled because this lamb's ear was shading them a lot. Now I have asparagus over there,
three clumps. They are doing very nice. I actually love these. I told you before that this is what I
had in my grandma's place. And this lacy, airy looking plant reminds me of my grandma's place.
These climbers, I'm trying to teach them or guide them to climb up. They are climbing against
this chicken wire, but my chickens from inside, they kind of peck them and eat the leaves and
it doesn't get even a chance to grow higher. So I put some ropes, so hopefully that will help them
climb higher and then cling to the chicken wire. Now my new addition in this bed is this
small bush, royal purple. Now this is what I'm trying out with my labeling. I brought
these rocks near the sea, I painted them black and with a white marker, permanent marker, I
wrote the name on the rock. So I'm trying this out, we'll see. I think it looks nice and
kind of not something that pops straight away into your eye and it's kind of permanent as well.
I didn't want any plastic signs or anything like that or white color. So I brought these rocks,
I painted them and used a white permanent marker. Now my crown fir is doing great
and these clematis are doing great, kind of wild a little bit,
but everything is doing great here. Sperias are nicely filling up and blooming soon.
Even my hookeras, four hookeras that I have here. Three of them are blooming,
one little bit struggles, but so far so good. Last year I had huge trouble with them, I
replanted them, replaced them, quite few, but still struggled. My little planter box
over here with petunias is filling up and my red skyscraper
astilbees are doing fine, gonna bloom soon with these red spikes over here.
And the other side, I a little bit cut back this, what was it? Anyway, forgot the name,
but it's a red rocket or arborist maybe. Red rocket, nice red spear or red interest and
my goldmound spirea. These spireas, double play artist, loaded with blooms.
Behind that I have peony that is not finished yet, but it is kind of at the end, a little bit
dried already. But this clump is huge and they're still blooming, provides really
nice pop of color here in my chicken coop garden. Hydrangea, little lime I have here,
and sedums and I have a canaceous. A canaceous mixed with this grass everywhere. And my evergreen
interest over here is doing great, two of them, one and two. My juneberry is growing,
you can see some berries over here already, and here is another peony almost finished.
So let's have a look at my front garden over here then. Here everything is looking good,
this little husk a little bit struggles because this is the one that I lifted up last year and
I divided and added some plants over there on the side. Other than that,
hostas are all doing great. They are a little bit shading or covering my evergreen ground.
I guess balls are wrong, globes is a better word. And these ones are junipers,
these are monglow junipers. And behind that I have another variety of hostas and these are
the same thing as with these front ones. I lifted that one over there and I replanted them over
there. So I'm gonna have two rows of two different varieties of hostas. One hosta variety over here,
half circle, and one over here in front of the bed.
Stillbees, white ones are blooming and yesterday at night time I looked out of the window and they
were glowing in the dark. Very glowing, very nice. Over here I have clematis over here that is doing
great. On the other side it kind of struggles because of snails or slugs, I'm not sure,
but something ate this plant. Now it is coming back but it's kind of weak at the moment.
Then nebata is blooming and everything is doing great over here. As I said, lavender not blooming
yet, maybe a week or two and then it starts. These roses starting to bloom as well. Now where do we
go? Over here is my coreon maple. Again, I thinned it a little bit to see the structure. This is what
I like. I would like to keep my trees open inside so that I can see through them. It's a very young
tree but still I start when they are young. Another combination of roses and lavenders.
Well, this one adds a lot of color over here. I'll put the name on the screen.
This shrub surprised me. This is hydrangea
Wimsred. I created this shrub from a cutting two years ago and for some reason I
planted it here last year but for some reason it's full of blooms. I'm really surprised.
Now let's have a look here. Again, a stillbees. Everything is doing great.
My evergreen columns, my tiny tim and elderberry is doing great as well. I almost cut it back to
the ground and it's filling up nicely. I planted these blue hostas over here.
They are filling up nicely. Little fillies doing good. Sedums are great and this one is also my
addition. I added smokebush golden spirit over here. Now I had lilac over here but with the last
windstorm it kind of huge this branch broke off and when I actually moved the trunk I saw that
the whole root system is so weak and it's going to break soon anyway so I went ahead and I took
the tree down and I planted this smokebush over here. Now in this bed you see also one addition.
This is the standard evergreen. I planted, if I remember correctly, four of them in my garden
but I'm not going to talk about it yet because I have a video coming out so stick around,
subscribe and I will give you my reasons why I'm introducing them into my garden,
what are the benefits and what problem I'm trying to solve with these standard evergreens.
But these Japanese maples, this is orthopurpurum and this is, oh geez what was it,
already forgot, anyway, but they are doing very good. I will put on the screen this name.
Now this rosebush rococo, I think the name is, I'll put on the screen,
is struggling a bit with some pests. I did spray it with green soap this morning.
We'll see if it helps. There's another peony that is almost finished with blooms
and my Korean maple jackfrost series, this is arctic jade, is doing great.
And this is view from the other side of my front bed. Now let's look at my very very front porch
bed. Now over here I actually don't have a lot of color but everything over here is doing well.
My hostas that I planted last year are coming out. I have here, look at this, volunteer oak tree
and I noticed it last year. I left it there and I'm leaving it this year as well. We'll see
what will come out of it. Usually I always try to, if it doesn't interfere with my other plants,
I let things grow. I have few spruces and pines growing also. We'll see what will come out of
them. If they want to grow there, I will let them grow until they don't bother my other plants.
Yep, over here everything is looking good and healthy. If you saw my video then my
brunneras are doing well in my pots. Over here my rhododendron that provides winter interest over
here is doing great. Hydrangeas, gonna see some blooms soon. Hostas, everything is doing great.
Now this tree, again because of this rain, all the rain we had this year, I see same signs
as I saw last year. Last year it struggled and leaves turned, I don't know, changed their color.
These red leaves, they got these spots and then a lot of leaves just fell off.
I don't know, fingers crossed it's not gonna repeat this year. My standard hydrangea also
doing great. I don't see blooms yet but I'm sure they are there. And my bird's nest
survived the winter. No bother, everything is looking good in my front garden.
So let's head to my cottage garden. Now my cottage garden, as you know, over here I had
three peonies. They finished blooming and then normal peonies took over and now they are also
almost done. And now what's replacing my peonies are foxgloves and delphiniums. Now on this side
also I have one peony, it's a late bloomer. It's blooming right now, has really nice pink
pink blooms and is doing great. My incredible hydrangea hedge is also doing what it's supposed
to do. My tiny tim hedge is great as well. Now over here, let's look at this side first.
Over here my rose is a little bit struggling but I replanted it this year so that's why.
Another rose, well not rose, peony that is blooming right now and is not actually done yet
is doing great. My geranium roseannes did get
munched by somebody or somebody ate a lot of these early leaves so they did struggle but
now they are starting to bloom and everything is fine with them. Now over here, as I said,
yeah sadly, well not sadly, that's how it goes. Peonies are done and you see I have geraniums
and foxgloves. Now foxgloves for me, I don't know, this is like a two meter or one meter and a half.
I don't actually want foxgloves that high but I can't find the shorter ones.
Same thing over here, peonies are done. I have geraniums over there and for some reason not that
many actually foxgloves. Okay but everywhere there's a lot of seedlings and everything is.
I'm gonna have them enough of them next year I think. Now my shade garden over here is doing
great, hostas are fine. To my surprise not so much slug damage and snail damage as I was afraid.
I had a lot of snails everywhere but looks like they didn't touch my hostas. Now brunneras that
I divided and planted here are doing great, leafing up and my roses at the end of each pathway are
doing great. I have two over here and same rose and it's called William Buffen. They are doing great.
They are loaded with blooms, great rose. And scent wise, no scent but they look gorgeous.
Straight away when you enter a cottage garden you see these pink climbing roses.
Now let's have a look at my side garden next. In my side garden I have Hockenacloa doing great.
I have my brunneras that I pruned, hostas, astilbees, my ferns. I had a little bit, quite a lot
die back actually on my climbing hydrangea but it's recovering. So everything is great over here,
no problems over here. And on the other side I have Chippendale roses. This is my bench where I sit
and on each side I have then roses. Chippendale looking great, full of buds and full of blooms
and dark night delphiniums. And in the middle here I have red climbing rose that is kind of
flopping and I want to guide it over here a little bit later on. So hopefully I will
be successful in that. Now this rose over here is a roadrunner something romance. I will put it on
the screen. And I have two standard hydrangeas over here also yeah blooms on this one and over
here. And then I have catmints and I should add another catmint over here and heucheras. I had
a lot more heucheras but they died last year and only two is left so I don't know. I will try maybe
to add more because it is kind of a nice color interest over here. Now then my hydrangeas over
here limetta. I'll put it on the screen but they are full of buds and they will
create they will open up and will be like white clouds over here. It was really gorgeous last
year and it's going to be even more gorgeous this year because they are much more mature
this year. Now this is exactly what I told you about volunteers. This one is two years old I
think. I noticed this seedling last year and I kept it. We'll see what will come out of it. Maybe
something fun. I can always prune it and create something out of it. So as I said they will
perform I hope they should perform really nice this year. Now my climbing hydrangea over here
alive over here alive and on this side also and this one here actually blooms and not only one
bloom but quite a few. Now let's have a look at this little circle I have over here. I have here
in the middle of Korean maple and heucheras. Now these heucheras are doing very nicely very
very good very well. They are in full sun and they don't struggle at all and I even didn't do
anything to them. I didn't even remove old leaves just left them to leaf out and that's what they
easy going plant until I have to divide them and rejuvenate. But that's that's a story for another
video. Now let's have a look then my fire pit garden over here also everything is doing great.
I cut back my catmint because all these catmints that you see over here here
there over there I have all the way to here everywhere catmints and it's the same thing
that I have in my French garden. But these ones I cut back I did Chelsea chop on these
so they are just now now starting to bloom and they are not that massive as in my French garden.
So I don't know maybe I will replace these with lavenders as well or I'm thinking about it because
they kind of take over and they if I don't cut them back and do the Chelsea chop they will just
swallow everything around them. Now here with the rose I planted caradana this shrub is doing great
this one a little bit struggles but I let it be. Now over here I have a tiny monster geranium
is blooming it already finished most of the blooms but it it will keep going
till frost with these blooms. And here in the middle I have nacat rose pink one I don't know
the variety but it's performing great for me here. Now this area struggles the most because you can
see my juneberry even doesn't put out doesn't put out as much growth as as this one this
juneberry over there and I will show you quickly this juneberry over here. It's a little bit kind
of clay soil over here but my roses look at that my roses love this soil. This is also a roadrunner
something pink pink roadrunner I think it was and I'm thinking to add even more roses over here
because even my sedums struggle over here one two three and I have also three over there one two
three even they struggle here. But salvia I thought they died over here this tiny salvia over here
and caradana over there but they are blooming this year. Now as I said if you remember
let's have a look at this one here as you remember I have a juneberry here and on each side I have
incredible hydrangeas and these are going to bloom with huge huge round blooms soon as well.
Another knockout rose pink one over here and what else creeping jenny and more
salvias and this is my Japanese maple blood good or or or purpureum not sure but it's in a pot at
the moment and and doing great. Now let's quickly have a look at my soon to be dining area and then
we'll move on to my long border. Now over here I wanted to show you my roses
now don't mind the boxes I'm gonna redo this area and we're gonna start building
our outdoor kitchen area but this rose over here I'll put it on the screen it's a climber and
blooms are huge now it has a very nice pleasant scent but I will show you on the other side
look at that bloom it's huge my hand it's almost the size of my hand now I don't have huge
hands but the bloom is still it's huge and the scent yeah it's a gorgeous scent
this is exactly what I wanted to have climbers over here where the entrance will be and when
you enter the area you can smell lovely roses I hope hopefully that dream will will come true
now my box box wood and tiny tins creating little globes over here and on the other side
and my maples are doing fine now this one got some sunscald I was very surprised that it did because
I did protect it with cover but still now it's not this year's damage it got I think already
last winter but it wasn't visible last year but it is now everything else is doing nicely here
no setbacks only these I'm trying to create little what's it called a little hedge over
there with these not birch trees but peach trees some of them died I have to replace them but most
of them are doing great again here this is one that I divided and this is one piece that I planted
over here another piece over there this is uranium rosanne also it's gonna fill all this area with
this little sad juniper I lifted it from my front garden it was anyway doesn't matter
we'll see it's an experiment I will leave it over here we'll see what will come out of it maybe I
will just have to dig it out and just you know be done with it but for now it's here everything else
also is doing great nothing has died this uranium is doing the best and I have one geranium here
underneath this maple here as well so now my long border my lavender is everywhere
I'm doing great this is my little experiment corner this one I cut it back all the way
this one I cut back half and this one I only trim the top and well I'm gonna give you updates soon
on these anyway now lamium is doing great full of blooms all these bumblebees and bees
are enjoying these lamium my echinaceas are taking over soon and astilbees doing great
I added some cat mint the one that I have in my french garden over here to my long borders as well
and these ones are doing great as well they are self-seeding for me here we'll see what will come
out of them and everything is I wanted to add that I bought another korean maple
arctic jade that's the one I managed to kill last year with I think I a little bit too much
removed their roots its roots so it struggled and died and I bought new one and I'm thinking
to plant it over here so more more lavenders spireas my hydrangeas are doing great on both sides
spireas again more lavender I'm trying to repeat lavender and the spireas
on on this side of my long border and on this side of my long border as well just to keep
repetition and so that your eye can can rest and that doesn't all these colors don't you know
overwhelm you now this struggles here this is some sort of a yellow elderberry I'm gonna have
to dig it up and replace it with something catmints are doing great this combination is also
I'm really happy with it my weeping willow and underneath I have two tiny thymes and three
emerald green arborvitaes this one is aspirin rose will bloom soon here also I have lamium
and I added here also lavender to keep the repetition
and I have here clematis that's going to bloom soon loaded with buds and same thing like
at the at the other side of my long border I have a knish over here this is a huge variety
it's going to be like almost two meters and it has pink plums and this year I have a weed
here in my bed this is wild strawberries and I haven't removed them yet because my kids they come
and eat those berries they are so sweet so I didn't have a heart I didn't have a heart to pull
them out so I will let my kids to harvest them and then I will put pull them out this one ends
with more lamium that is taking over space and self-seeds itself a lot this is also my new
addition it's a spruce I'll put it on the screen the name I replanted it like a week or two weeks
ago now I almost forgot I promised to show you my latest garden bed this is garden bed that I
created last year now I didn't use landscape fabric here and I didn't use this heavy duty
paper paper or cardboard either so I just removed the first layer of this grass or weed layer
and then I just added mulch and it's kind of an experiment I wanted to see how it will do
and I have to say it is kind of a work still and there's a lot of weeds not a lot but still I have
weed this area already twice and I have to do it I think few times more I guess it's but anyway
we can talk about that in some other video this video is about how my garden or this flowerbed
looks at the moment this is where I planted my three Japanese maples this is here you go
now I can tell you straight away what it is osakazuki yeah osakazuki and this one is
osakazuki this one is orange dream and over here I added then blood good if you remember
my Japanese maple video and here is my three standards but again I don't want to talk about
it too much there will be a video coming out about them why I bought them what was the problem
and how it will fix that problem so stay tuned subscribe and I will keep you updated
but this is yeah my latest garden bed and when I started in spring it was completely empty
and now it's coming along nicely so that was my last flowerbed I wanted to share with you
so this was my June garden I hope you enjoyed it if you like my garden if you want to see how I
propagate and divide and replant and buy new plants and execute all my projects that I have
in my head then you know what to do subscribe to the channel like the video and let's enjoy my
roses I will enjoy my roses and once they are done or first flush is done then hydrangeas take
over and then we can enjoy hydrangeas already in my July garden tour so that's all I have for you
don't forget don't only work in your garden enjoy it as well see you soon bye bye
