Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe driver tests a Porsche Carrera GT at Ascari on a damp morning, highlighting the car's volatile nature. Despite its high build quality and legendary V10 engine, the vehicle is described as \"terrifying\" and \"naughty,\" requiring extreme precision and respect to handle, especially when managing slides and the sensitive traction control system.
I'm about to do some talking, so shut the f*** up.
Right.
Carrera GT. Not been in one of these for a while.
I went on the launch in 2004, but I've not really driven one in anger for a while.
Ascari's a little bit damp this morning, so we thought we'd give it a go and show the thing moving around a bit and see what it's like.
They're notoriously lairy, these.
It's on the new Cup 2 tyre, but it's got standard suspension.
I've had a little go, frankly terrified.
So I'm going to film myself, for your benefit, being terrified by Carrera GT.
Right, so it's really slippery.
And this thing, these are famously naughty in the wet.
It's not about how you get the slide going.
There's ample power, 600 horsepower from that lovely V10.
But it's how you wind the lock off and come off the throttle.
Unless you get it absolutely perfect, it snaps back.
And that means, even for seasoned idiots like me, it's a bit scary.
So that's why I've just pressed TC off.
Also, Porsche somehow managed to place the TC off button in the one area where you might actually hit it with your hand when you go from fourth to third.
I wonder how many Carrera GT crashes happened because of that.
Anyhow, fourth, third.
So you watch what happens here.
I'm going down here, I'm not really trying here at all.
I might come into this right-hander and just back it in.
Quite leery is the answer to that.
I mean, I'm just sort of tippy-toe.
There's that sort of nervous moment when the car's almost sliding.
Anyhow, let's enjoy it a bit more.
Gear shift is amazing.
The V10 is amazing.
Again, traction, you'd think would be mega.
But it wants to slide everywhere.
Oh, they're coming up behind me.
I think it's in my top ten, one of these.
You don't get enough noise in the cabin.
That V10 howl, you're getting outside.
I'm not getting that in here.
It's quite sort of Audi, the sound in here, in a nice way.
It's a lovely linear engine.
It just pulls from zip to about eight.
By today's standards, it's not that quick.
You watch this now.
This one's right under here.
It's doing different things here.
Watch this now.
If I just touch the throttle, it snaps sideways, straight away.
It's not an easy car to control.
It's getting that lock off.
Unless you're really accurate with it, it jags back and goes the other way.
A lot of Carrera GTs, I'm sure, have been like that.
But it's a simple car, and it's such high quality.
But you don't just get in it and thrash it.
And it's no ESP.
It's just a TC system.
So you just treat it with a lot of respect.
All sorts of stuff, wrong stuff written about the clutch.
There you go.
There's a weird something about the clutch.
You just treat the clutch with respect.
I think it was the first production car with a carbon clutch.
Brakes are superb.
It doesn't feel heavy.
It's got lovely hydraulic steering as well.
Great feel.
Does it feel like a really supercharged, super-duper Boxster?
Really, the Boxster has an approachability that this doesn't.
You're aware this is a much bigger car.
And it responds to trailing throttle and agitation in a way that that car doesn't.
You really have to behave with this.
Bit of CGT.
