All right, today we're going to do some tips to make you a better drummer, or pro tips
for drummers, all right?
So today we're going to talk about drum rolls.
How can you play faster drum rolls, all right?
So let's just say you have a drum roll that's at 120 beats per minute.
That's right here, all right?
A drum roll, 120 beats per minute.
What if my hand's slowing down?
What if I'm playing too fast?
Or what if I'm playing dirty, all right?
The first thing about playing drum rolls, you have to understand where your check pattern
is.
All right?
Your check pattern is the underlining pattern.
Like if I was playing a roll, and I took away the dittos, what are my hands doing?
What are my hands doing without the dittos, all right?
So let's keep it at 120, all right?
And then let's see what my hands are doing without the dittos.
One of the end, two of the end.
So your hands have to stay here.
Your hands have to stay in that pattern right here.
Let's do it again.
So when I play my roll, I'm still playing those 16th notes.
I'm still here.
And when I play my roll, the 16th notes are still there, all right?
So you have to figure out your check pattern.
I'm like, what is my hands doing if I take away the dildos?
And the next thing you need to do or the first thing you need to do is practice with a metronome
and slow it down.
If your tempo is 120, go down to 80, 85, and play it slow and find out where you are.
All right?
And then gradually get faster.
So we're here.
Just do it with the right hand.
Just a little bit.
And it's harder to play slower than it is to play fast.
Let's do it again.
Right hand.
My hands are still here.
Still in 16th note pattern.
Left hand.
Together.
As you can hear, my tempo was fluctuating going back and forth right there because I
wasn't nodding in.
For video sake, let's just keep going a little faster.
I'm going to go to 95 next.
You should move up in increments of five there.
So let's just go to 90.
Let's just go to 90.
Good.
All right.
Now we're at 90.
Double both hands.
My check pattern is still there.
Let's go to 95 next, all right?
And then we're going to increment to five.
Remember 120 as I go.
Right there.
Check pattern is there.
All right.
Let's go to 100.
Make sure we stay in that check.
All right.
I'm still there, and your right hand is going to be on that, one, two, three, four, on the
downbeat.
If I take it with my left hand, I'm just doing eight notes on that right hand, but it's falling
on the downbeat.
All right.
Let's go to 105.
Here we go.
Sixteenths.
Take it with the left.
Again.
Double that right hand.
Add that double.
Don't rush it.
Right into it.
Right there.
All right.
Let's go on up to 110.
110.
That's 16 notes.
Right hand.
Hold it out.
Good.
115.
Gradually get faster.
Again.
Right hand again.
And up.
120.
This is how it goes.
All right.
There's our goal.
120.
Start at 80.
80.
85.
90.
95.
100.
110.
115.
120.
Let's just pick a random tempo.
I'm just going to roll it, and we'll see where it stops.
144.
I made it to 120.
Peace.
