NASCAR champion Ryan Blaney hosts YouTube engineer Weston Champlin at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The pair explores the physical intensity of stock car racing through high-speed oval laps and road course challenges, while discussing Champlin's passion for creating unconventional, one-of-a-kind automotive builds.
I'm just going to tell you this, on the gas with Ryan Blaney on NASCAR,
it's going to be a crazy episode because I was in here screaming like a little girl.
I'm a bad influence. I'm a great shotgun driver.
Is that my face?
Hang on for me, Winston.
That thing was badass.
I'm old dog, dude.
I'm Ryan Blaney, and I'm a NASCAR champion.
But today, we're at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway
for a show I've always wanted to make.
It's me and my guest talking while my foot is fully on the gas.
Today, I've got YouTube's redneck science engineer,
Weston Champlin, riding in my passenger seat.
If it's loud, dangerous, and a bad idea, he's usually already done it.
But even Weston has never gone full send like this.
Oh, dude.
What's the fastest you've ever rocketed up?
Allegedly, 170, 180.
That's what the ticket was for.
The only thing, whenever somebody reached out to me,
it's like, hey, you want to go experience this?
I'm like, I would love to if I could fit in the car.
Yes, you're right there.
Dessert.
It actually feels way better than I thought it would be.
It can be about 130 degrees in one of these cars,
so I really appreciate Body Armor for keeping me and our guests hydrated
and on the gas.
Weston.
Dude, how are you doing?
What's up, dude?
How you been?
Good to see you, man.
Thanks for coming out.
I'll tell you what.
I looked out the window at the car on the way in.
Yeah.
Looks good.
I know you have an old cup car.
Yes.
So have you driven it?
50 feet.
I think I broke it.
I think you did.
It'd been sitting for 15 years, and for some reason,
I thought a 7,500 to 15,000 RPM burnout would be a good idea.
Right.
And it wasn't.
This is about as close as we're going to get.
I mean, this car really just came off the racetrack,
and we threw a right seat in it and put some doors on it, and that's it.
So this is the closest you're going to get to what we do.
We're going to put a heart rate monitor on you, too.
My doctor did that.
He said I was a beast.
Yeah?
He also said I had bad hearing.
He said obese, but whatever.
Anyway, back to the van.
And if you want me to stop at any time, we got a white flag for you, too.
OK.
You just got to wave the white flag.
I know you're not going to do it.
You're not going to bail out.
I know you're not going to.
It's going to take me 20 minutes to get in there.
Once I get in there, I'm in it.
We ready to hit the track?
Let's do it.
I'll get your helmet.
Oh, yeah, I need that.
Get your gloves.
Yeah, I might need that, too.
I'm going to get your helmet carrier.
Dude, that's fine.
You know what?
The service here is impeccable.
First up, we'll answer some questions as we run on the same legendary oval
they raced at Brickyard 400 and Indy 500.
Then there's the speed challenge.
The laps get faster and the questions get harder.
After that, we'll hit the infield road course for a bunch of turns
and even more difficult questions.
And then we finish in the no spill zone.
More on that later.
Oh, hello, sweet pea.
How are you doing?
It's LS based.
I thought it would be a catfish.
I thought the closer you get, the worse it would look.
This thing's badass.
This thing looks good.
What's the limiter on one of these?
So this one they got, it's limited at like 7,200.
OK.
Normally, like our cup cars, we're up to like 9,200.
Damn, that's wild.
That's spinning.
Yeah, it's wild.
All right, let's get in this thing.
Let's take her for a lap.
All right, I nerded out enough over the over the engine bay.
Thanks, skinny thoughts.
Oh, I broke it.
How's it fit, boys?
That's good enough.
Yeah.
That's good enough.
See, I'm good.
Yeah, we're good.
I don't look good.
Oh, ----.
Most people might give up in a situation like this.
But Westin is definitely not most people.
He really wants it.
And I love him for that.
Ow.
Oh, that is tight.
I hate to tell you, the air conditioner is broken in this thing.
What do you do if you got an itch in the middle of the race?
You got to get the visor up, scratch it on the straightaway.
Sometimes you can get there.
This is the thing I don't think anyone thinks about when you're stock car driving.
It's time for me to learn a little bit about Westin
and for him to get a taste of the epic oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Oh, that thing's a dog box.
Yeah, I really didn't want to stall it in front of you.
That would have been embarrassing.
Oh, so this is a slow lap?
Yeah.
Oh, I couldn't tell.
Like, at what point did you decide to stop fixing things
and just start building things that have never been built?
Like, what was that?
So how do you think of that?
When I was a kid, my mom had this King Ranch truck that was awesome, right?
Well, the motor blew up because it was a really bad year of motor.
And I always loved those years of trucks.
So I decided to come and swap one, put a different motor in it.
And then I bought a Mustang, a bright red one.
And I'd made like six or seven videos of coming and swapping this other truck.
And somebody was like, oh, you had to come and swap that Mustang.
And I'm like, huh, that's a funny joke.
I'll do that.
So I built another cool thing and another cool thing and another cool thing.
And here we are.
How do you find what you want to do next?
Is it a random thing or do you have plans?
It's a pretty random thing of like, oh, I want to do this.
And then it might take us six months to get prepared to do whatever we want to do.
So do you think you're a mechanic or are you a fanatic?
Definitely fanatic.
I've always been good at cars.
Overall, my passion is I love making YouTube videos.
And I think my hobby is cars.
And it's a really big hobby.
I love it.
And it all goes hand in hand together with what I do.
Okay.
So that was the easy one.
Okay.
For the next one, I'm all up to speed a little bit.
You're going to tell me your four favorite builds that you've ever done.
Tell me a little bit about each build.
So probably my favorite build.
Top one is.
Holy ----.
Probably the NASCAR.
I'm getting ready to build after this.
Oh, my God.
This is sick.
Probably my diesel Mustang.
That thing just never fails to work.
It works all the time.
Never fails.
And I built it years ago.
And it.
Holy cow.
The G-Force is my man.
The wall is right there.
Son of a basket.
The second one would probably be.
Honestly, I built a drifting mower last week.
And that thing is so fun to drive.
Probably that.
Oh, dude.
I'm driving one of these damn things one day.
I don't know where and I don't know how, but I'm going to drive one of these things.
Oh, this is sick.
Third one.
I built a G-Force to make 1500 horsepower that does burnout.
That's a pretty good one.
I like that one.
871 clone LS.
And it rips.
Fourth one.
Let me think.
Fourth one.
You know, this is one of those moments where your mind shuts off.
And you start thinking.
Damn, this is an experience.
Oh, my God.
Oh, a diesel.
It sounds so good.
Fourth one.
My Rolls Royce.
I come and swap.
That's my favorite one you ever did.
Dude, it's luxurious.
It's big.
It's powerful.
Like, it's got everything you would want.
It is probably one of the coolest things we ever.
Is that my face?
That is your face, bud.
Oh, dude, that's a massive face.
Holy cow.
We got you.
That was good.
Right there.
Hell yeah, man.
That was bad.
Great job, dude.
Hey, you see that?
Yeah, Chuck it.
He don't need it.
It is hot in this bad girl.
That thing was bad.
I don't know how and I don't know when,
but I'm going to drive one of these things one day.
How fast was that?
We got 170 and into turn three there.
Yeah, let's get him out so I can fit.
There we go.
Yeah, don't grab that.
That's not very strong.
Not very strong at all.
Almost home free.
Not quite.
Almost.
Nice.
Oh, that was almost easier than getting in.
Good job.
Hell yeah.
That was pretty good.
I didn't think I was going to get my heart pumping.
It did.
Yeah.
I can tell my doctor.
Joke's on you.
I am a beast.
My team has prepped a road course car
to maximize performance on 12 crazy infield turns.
So for Weston, he'll be living a redneck's dream.
How many laps you doing?
I'm going to go until you wave that white flag.
All right.
Let's rock and roll, baby.
Boom.
Get the tire and light the fire, baby.
Oh, yeah.
Put the door on too.
There'll be enough.
Do you watch YouTube?
I watch YouTube a lot.
Who's your favorite to watch?
It changes from day to day because I find a new interest.
But overall, I've been watching stuff on supercars lately.
It's actually funny.
I've been watching some Tradman videos.
He was a fun guy.
Yeah, I know.
I enjoyed him.
He's a cool dude.
Has there ever been a project you did that you kind of got in it and you're like,
holy ----, this is way harder than I thought it was going to be?
Oh, yeah.
We've had projects that we've had to abandon because it's just not that they're harder,
but it just wasn't worth it anymore to do it, you know?
That was the easy one.
That was wild.
You got real quiet at the end of that one lap.
Were you nervous?
Dude, it was one of those things where I started thinking about it.
I'm like, man, I'm not going to scream like a little girl.
I'm not going to do it.
So you had to go silent.
I'm like, I'm going to be silent.
I'm going to get quiet here for a second.
I'm going to control my breathing.
I'm going to calm my heart rate down.
Right.
I know the measure of my heart rate.
I'm not going to have a 300 beats per minute.
My doctor's going to tell me.
Yeah, you're right.
You are a beast.
The last one is we're going to have a cup of body armor and you got to try your best
to not spill a drop of it.
Oh, this ----'s getting spilled.
What happens if I drink it before we get there?
I mean, that's a strategy.
You got to try to keep as much in it as you can.
All right.
We're judging off of that.
Are we?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, ----.
Oh, yeah.
Can I hold it over your lap instead of mine?
You suck.
Oops, oops, oops, oops.
You suck.
Here we go, baby.
Come on, body armor.
Hang in there.
Hang on for me, Weston.
I'm holding on to it.
Hang on for me, Weston.
Nice and cool.
Power slide, baby.
Power slide.
There you go.
That's what I'm talking about.
My man.
That's what I'm talking about.
Oh, that's the stuff.
There ain't much left.
What would you do to this thing?
How would you modify it?
First thing, air conditioning.
That's probably a pretty good one.
Air conditioning would be the first thing.
And then I think after that, maybe a wider seat.
And then, I don't know.
Oh, are you going to do it?
That's a good way to end it.
She's a little hot.
Just a little bit.
We'll cool her down here.
She's all right.
God dang, dude.
I seen the donut marks on the ground.
I'm like, you're going to do it to me.
You're going to do it to me.
I knew it.
That was a cheap trick.
I hope you had a good time, man.
Oh, I had a great time.
That was badass.
Let's get you out of there.
You know, you did all right.
I should have put my hand over it.
You did better than Ochocinco.
Ochocinco dropped it.
Weston saved seven ounces.
Good enough for third place.
And hats off to Keegan-Michael Key
for winning this season's No Spill Zone.
Trust me, it was no easy challenge.
Well, guys, I'm just going to tell you this.
On the gas, the Ryan Blaney on NASCAR,
it's going to be a crazy episode
because I was in here screaming like a little girl.
We're not going to show any of that on this video.
On my video, I'll show it.
Yeah, on your video, you can show it.
We'll have to compare the two and see.
Exactly, on mine, we're going to edit it all out.
Can someone get a Zaza and Zaza me out of here?
You made it, dude.
So we got you an Indianapolis Motor Speedway checkered flag
because you won and we did burnouts, you won.
I have not been like nauseous in a car
in probably four years and all the crazy stuff I've done.
After years going through that, I'm like, it's hot in there.
It's hot in there, dude.
I don't know how you do that every weekend.
Just get used to it.
How do you think I stay so skinny?
You don't own a sauna, do you?
I do.
What?
I do.
So you do that and you're like, yeah, I'm going to go home and sauna.
Because I can relate.
At least I'm in it through the week.
Do you have a steering wheel in your sauna?
Yeah, I just sit there.
That makes sense.
Weston, dude, I appreciate it.
You can ride shotgun with me anytime.
Whenever you want to do this again.
Thank you so much for having us out.
And you can find Weston Champlin on YouTube.
Five million people already did.
Check out the Smokestang, the Rolls Royce Cummins, the Backwards Ram.
It's all there.
And honestly, none of it makes sense,
but it's some of the coolest stuff that I've ever seen.
It's absolutely incredible.
So thank you, Body Armor, for sticking with us, hydrating us through it.
Another great episode of On the Gas.
Thanks, On the Gas, for having us out.
Make sure you watch this.
Make sure you subscribe to NASCAR's YouTube channel,
because, man, I'll tell you what,
they put a lot of work into making this series really awesome.
And thank you guys for watching.
Thanks, bud.
I'm going to go find some hair conditioner.
Thanks for joining us for the first season of On the Gas.
Who would you like to see next season?
Leave me a comment.
