They're turning up the heat on Long Island's future firefighters and campers are up to the test.
News 12's Logan Crawford gives us a look at the action.
So look at the smoke, right? Look how the fire's growing.
And let's see how the smoke and everything starts moving around.
It's a crash course on what it takes to be a firefighter.
Camp Fahrenheit 516 is a week-long camp for teens looking to one day join a department on Long Island.
15-year-old Anthony Crustman hopes to become a firefighter in Wantagh.
My dad, he's the chief in Wantagh, so he like really inspired me to get into it.
Nearly 50 teens are taking part in the camp at the Nassau County Fire Academy in Bethpage.
And it's going to give them a taste of what they're going to be going through
and what they're going to be going through at a scene of a fire.
It's going great, you know, great experience right now.
These junior firefighters are already volunteers at their local fire departments.
They're spending the week getting some hands-on experience,
simulating going into burning buildings using the fire hose,
and also wearing that heavy firefighter gear while dealing with intense heat and smoke.
It gets really hot.
Organizers say the camp is helping build the next generation of volunteer firefighters on Long Island.
The recruitment of firefighters is down,
so this is a great thing to keep them involved and engaged
until they reach the age to join their regular departments.
And a lot of these juniors go on to become chiefs, so it's a great thing to see.
In Bethpage, Nassau County, Logan Crawford, News 12.
