Hey there, how's it going everybody?
Dan here with plantabundance.com coming to you once again from the backyard food forest.
I'm standing next to the Santa Rosa plum tree here.
This is one that I put in the ground back in 2013, so waited three years to get this
beautiful fruit set.
Actually it started to produce fruits last year and I went ahead and picked those off
and allowed the tree more time to focus on its foundational growth and I'm very glad
I did.
I've got probably about 60 or so fruits on this tree and as you can see it's holding
up very well with the weight of the fruit.
But this is probably the most popular plum tree in California and Arizona for sure and
perhaps the entire United States in part to the fact that it's cold hardy down to zone
5 and it's a self-fertile tree so you don't need another plum tree in order to get a good
fruit set.
Now if you do have another you will get an even more dense fruit set than just having
one but just a nice tree for the backyard gardener whether it be for a food forest design
or just a garden.
I'm just going to go around and squeeze some of these and find one that's, that one's pretty
good.
Find the ripest one here, that one's really nice, here goes one, oh beautiful, rub that
powder off and look at that, is that gorgeous or what?
Let's give this Santa Rosa plum a try, sweet, juicy, just a wonderful cultivar.
So this Santa Rosa plum tree was created back in 1906 by Luther Burbank, he was an American
botanist, horticulturalist and a pioneer in agricultural science.
He developed over 800 different species of plant so quite the gentleman and we're reaping
the benefits of his work now.
So here's two fruit trees in one hole and the tree on the right here is another Santa
Rosa plum.
Getting a pretty good fruit set over here as well, the fruits are a little larger here,
this tree is a year older than the other one, that one's good right there, now this tree
on the left is a flavor grenade pluot and unfortunately the wildlife really like this
tree.
This had probably about 25 or so fruits on it and I got to eat two of them and never
got to make a video on it so unfortunate but again I've spoken before about sharing with
the wildlife and you know as long as I get to keep half of what I'm growing I'm happy.
That's it for now everybody, hope this video finds you and finds you well, out in the world
and out in your garden planting more abundance in your life, take care.
