The first movement was the confession. The Adagio was the grief. This is the resurrection.

The Allegro scherzando from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is the most cathartic finale in the Romantic concerto repertoire. After nearly forty minutes of shadow and longing, Rachmaninoff arrives in C major: blazing, triumphant, completely certain. The man who couldn't write a note for two years finishes by saying: I'm back. Louder than before.

Khatia Buniatishvili plays the finale with the abandon of someone who has been waiting for this moment since the first note of the concerto. Under Gianandrea Noseda's baton, the Filarmonica Teatro Regio Torino matches her fire note for note. The famous romantic melody in the middle of the movement, the one Rachmaninoff later said was his most perfect melody, arrives like a reward for everything that came before.

The final coda is one of the great moments in all of music. When it ends, you understand why audiences in 1901 gave Rachmaninoff a standing ovation that lasted twenty minutes.
