Possibly the Goodest Boy Who Ever Lived

Today we are grooming Smokey and he's a 16 year old Russian Blue. Hello? Yeah? Hello friendly kitty. Now because Smokey is 16. You want some tube? At his age he is no longer self-grooming. I have to throw the tube if I feel that somebody is going to jump. So that's the reason why he's here today. That's why the owners brought him in. I told them that I would evaluate him, you know, de-shed him, comb out any matting he might have and then decide whether or not I'm going to take him for a bath. Because he is a very old cat and old cats when they get stressed it's a more scary situation than the average cat. Because old cats can have underlining health conditions that you're unaware of that can make stress even more dangerous for them. So I try not to bathe senior cats unless it's really really necessary. For example they're really really dirty. Or if they're matted I'll let him finish the tube. Finish your tube. I kind of make it a last resort type situation. You like tube but you're far more interested in exploring your surroundings than you are eating food. He said you had some matting but I don't really feel any. I think you're just shedding quite heavily. So the Russian Blue sheds just as much as the British Shorthair and British Shorthaired cats shed a crazy amount of hair. So I actually really enjoy using the Equigroomer on these types of cats because it's extremely satisfying. It really grabs their coat just really really well and they lose a ton of coat with this brush. So it's fun to do. It's quite the fluffy process. There's hair everywhere. Right buddy? You seem like a very friendly cat. I think I need to. Yeah you have some matting here. You know let me brush it. This is just shedding mats meaning it's going to slide right out. Yes you're a good boy. And the best comb to use for these types of mats is the Cat Carding Butter Comb because it does what it sounds like. It's kind of like butter. See how it just grabs those mats and pulls them right out. I get lots and lots and lots of messages. You are certainly shedding a lot of coat. You probably just can't reach around to lick this area anymore and because he has tons of undercoat he has tons of dry skin as well. Growing up the Russian Blue was always my dream cat. I had an obsession with gray cats that were like solid gray all over like this with the kind of like yellow copper eyes and the only reason why I didn't get one was because they shed like crazy while the British Longhair sheds a lot as well. I actually find it easier to maintain than short-haired cats because oftentimes their shedding coat gets stuck and needs to be removed by a human and so I have the ability of removing the coat myself before it goes all over my house where these cats that doesn't really happen and they just shed like mad everywhere and for that reason I didn't get myself a Russian Blue. The rain is coming down really really rough and it is loud and that might spook him a little bit because it's pretty loud in here because of that and in case you guys are wondering what that sound is. I beg of you. I would be lying if I said I didn't have any concerns about bathing him. I certainly do. So I'm actually just going to touch him with water first to see how he reacts to that before I go ahead and put shampoo on him because if I can't get the shampoo off of him obviously that would suck. Peeing in the bathtub is absolutely acceptable. I'd much rather you pee in here than to pee while you are getting blow dried. I am going to put him in the hair dryer where he will dry for probably about an hour. I'm not going to bother hand drying him at all. He's an old man. I don't want to stress him out. He's doing really really good and I'm sure he'll just relax and hang out in the hair dryer for a bit. You're a good boy. Good kitty. Good old man. You're a good old man. Yes you are. Obviously I'll give him a brush again at the end because I'm sure he'll have more shedding coat that needs to come off but at least this will help his dry skin a little bit. I'm glad it went so well.
