Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of The Process presented to you by Atlanta
Drum Academy.
We're going to take you through our summer camp rehearsal with our clinician, Mr. Bernard
Smith.
Mr. Smith comes to us not only with teaching experience, but playing experience as well.
He's a current member of the Heavy Hitters Drumline for the Atlanta Braves.
He's a former member of the stage play Drumline Live.
He's done a couple of tours overseas as well.
He's also a former instructor of cream percussion and a former member of the Million Dollar
Funk Squad from Norfolk State University.
He is currently the instructor at Arabia Mountain High School, which is in Lathonia, Georgia.
So during this portion of the camp, we brought the kids up into three separate groups and
we told all of them to come up with eight measures of their own cadence.
We gave them the tempo and they just had to be creative on what they already knew.
So whenever we're cleaning up a cadence or teaching a cadence, we always play only a
few counts and we stop at a certain point.
So that way we may be able to clean up what they know from that point and not try to go
on and learn a lot at one time.
Yep, and the reason he stopped them right there is because they did not come out together.
One thing that Mr. Smith stressed to them was we start together and we finish together.
Get it right.
Another reason he stopped, dynamics.
Too many times our drum kids think everything is played loud, but not everything is played
loud.
You have dynamics.
Next time on The Process.
You should be at the top of the head too.
Stay out, stay out, stay out.
