Welcome to the Shoal River Retreat.
This is a tiny house located in Florida.
Now, you might be surprised
because this doesn't necessarily look like
what you think of Florida,
but we're about 30 minutes from the beach
in a private wooded area.
We get the best of both worlds here.
A private cabin in the woods in Florida,
but within driving distance to the beach.
And the price point for this place is absolutely phenomenal.
I think you guys will really like it.
At only 432 square feet of living space,
this is a tiny house.
I can sleep four people.
And I think you guys will really like this space.
Now, I've also interviewed the hosts.
Pretty much my first interview is live right now.
They're brothers, they're a family unit.
They built this place themselves and run it themselves.
So you'll be supporting the small family business
if you want to come stay here,
which I think is really cool
because a lot of places in Florida
aren't necessarily like that.
But where are we in Florida?
We're in Crestview, Florida.
So you'll fly, if you're flying,
fly into Fort Walton Beach.
Amazing airport, for one.
It's my favorite airport I've ever been to.
We fly there a lot.
And this is only about 30 minutes from there.
So very nice spot here.
We also have access to the river.
Lots of cool stuff.
But taking a look at this tiny house,
you can see it's really tall.
How is this 432 square feet of living space?
Well, there's a lot of space inside,
ceiling-wise, we'll get there in a minute.
Exterior-wise, we're kind of here on the bluff,
if you want to come over here more.
We're over here on the bluff, get great views.
There's a deck space out here.
And I really like the landscaping they did here
with the rocks and just the stone everywhere.
But the outside is black.
And I asked the hosts where they got inspiration from.
But what was the overall inspiration of a tiny house
and a tiny house in this design?
Honestly, watching your videos.
Well, we did, we got a lot of our inspiration
from your account.
We went with this option.
My brother, Marcus, and his company built it
with these guys.
And we kind of went with the idea
because we're big A-frame fans.
Our folks were A-frame fans when we lived up in Minnesota.
And we kind of wanted to take that
and have the cabin feel down here in Florida.
And you guys, you two helped build it, right?
Tell me a little bit about that.
You've done all of it here.
So tell me about that.
Yeah, I was never a carpenter or anything,
but I was in the Navy.
And when I got out of the Navy, I jumped right in on this.
So it was quite a new learning experience for it.
What'd you do in the Navy?
I was a sonar technician.
I was on a destroyer, DDG.
Nothing relating to this.
No, nothing at all.
Yeah, no experience whatsoever, man.
Probably the only experience that we've ever had
is back when we were younger, my parents built a pole barn
and my dad had us help him finish it off.
I just really like the way this looks.
It doesn't feel like Florida.
If you don't necessarily like the Florida feel,
but we're here in Florida and get all the amenities there.
Let's head inside.
Walking inside, I seriously love this layout
and this design.
The first thing that caught my eye
is the amount of space there is in here.
For only 432 square feet of living space,
that's really not that much.
It feels like way more.
I was very surprised when they told me that.
I think that's thanks to the extremely tall vaulted ceilings.
It's not just a little loft space.
That loft space upstairs has a full on second floor,
like eight to 10 foot ceilings up there as well.
No hunkering down.
We're gonna be getting there in a second.
But here in this front space, it's all open.
They have a giant fan up top
and they have windows up here on the front as well
for that natural lighting.
There's not much, it's pretty well lit in here
for being in the woods of Florida,
especially on a cloudy day like it is today.
And if we take back a look at the ceiling,
I love what they did there.
I love the pine wood.
I love those wood beams.
It just adds a lot of character
and just depth to this place.
Anyway, here on the main floor
is where a lot of the action is at.
Whenever you walk through that front glass door,
we're immediately in the kitchen and living room space.
But this kitchen is where we will start.
Plenty of room for a kitchen.
This is a full kitchen, by the way.
You could do full-time living here
and there's plenty of space
because of this oven and range top right here.
A lot of the, I read your guys' comments,
a lot of the places I visit don't have ovens
and I know that hinders full-time living
if you're thinking about building
a similar cabin like this one.
Well, this one has enough room for it.
And I like the size.
And that's a really nice one as well.
Prestige, really fitting right there.
And we have the range hood above.
I love how small it is and sleek as well.
Microwave over here.
The floating shelves with your dishes.
I think they really went with the farmhouse,
just country cabin theme.
Not necessarily farmhouse.
There's a couple of touches like that throughout here.
But just cabin comforting,
which is not typically common here in Florida.
Normally you get the Florida look.
And if that's not your thing,
which it's really not my thing,
if you like more of cabins,
but you wanna be 30 minutes from the beach,
this is it, the cabin.
Anyway, I'll continue with the kitchen.
We have a really nice stainless steel,
looks like black stainless steel sink here.
Really cool faucet with the gold touches.
The toaster's up there
and we have plenty of cabinetry below.
They leave all the stuff here free.
This is my first time looking inside of here.
Actually, I really like how smooth these cabinets are.
They leave the coffee for you, of course.
Really, really nice kitchen overall.
Can't forget the fridge.
Hey, it matches prestige.
These match, which is a good touch.
Can't complain about that.
That's nice.
So I like this kitchen.
I like how they have the tongue and groove up on top
and plenty of can lighting for good natural,
for good, it's not natural,
just for good lighting.
And they have shiplap on the walls as well.
I always loved that.
You guys know I love that.
But continuing, you can see here's the dining table
and seats enough for four people.
We have the TV here.
Let's make sure,
I've never seen the TV over the dining table.
Let's make sure it swivels.
It does.
So you can do that while you're sitting in the living room
watching the TV.
So, oh gosh, can I get this back?
It's a little stiff.
There we go.
We'll continue into the living room space now.
You can dine.
You can watch TV while you dine
or you can swivel it out and sit here on the couch.
Oh my.
You know, this couch is pretty comfy.
I'm gonna give it an eight out of 10.
I think it's nice.
I also think it's probably a sleeper sofa.
Let me look.
It is.
So there's four dining seats.
There's two beds here
because this can convert into a bed.
Now you can't have the TV in here
because of these windows.
They take up all the space.
So that's why they put the TV over top of the dining table.
I prefer the windows over a TV space.
You know, I wouldn't even mind if there was no TV here
but I do like the windows much better.
Then you got two seats over here.
So there is plenty of seating here if you want.
There's even an outdoor deck space right here in the front.
Let's walk out there real quick.
I'll unlock it.
And the deck space continues out here.
So the property sloops down.
Magnolia trees everywhere.
And actually the woods is pretty open.
So it's quite nice being out here in Florida.
The Panhandle, close to the beach in the woods.
Out here we have a couple chairs
and this is a propane or gas fireplace to enjoy.
Walking back inside, there's one more space down here
and you probably saw it off the kitchen.
So if we walk back here, you probably guessed it.
It's the bathroom space.
Now this bathroom is really nice.
Walking in here, this bathroom has a double vanity
and the mirror here on the left side.
Now, if you're on this one, you don't get the mirror
but they did opt for a window.
There's two windows in here, which I like.
And this vanity is just really, really beautiful.
And check out this mirror.
You know, I love this type of mirror
and especially the arch, I love that.
So continuing behind me, we have the sliding barn door,
kind of gives it that cabin, farmhouse feel.
And we can walk back in here.
I don't know how well you guys will be able to see this.
This is the shower space and the toilet right there.
The shower has really nice tiling all around
and here's the shower head above me, sliding glass door,
the black shower base.
And overall, you get a nice tiled shower and the toilet
but it's private from the vanity
and there's a double vanity here.
So for 432 square feet, you get a double vanity,
a full tiled shower.
It's not just like the, you know, three foot by three foot.
It took up that whole wall.
I'm really impressed with this place so far.
I hope you guys are as well, but there's one more space
and you're probably wondering about the bed.
Do not go away yet because a lofted bed
sometimes is not good, but this one is top tier.
First off, check out this ladder.
I love the ship's ladder.
You know, people can define different things for ladders.
I definitely consider this one's the ship's ladder
because of the handling and the bracketing.
It just looks more like a ship's ladder.
Anyway, I digress.
Let's head upstairs.
Walking up in this loft, we have the nice handle here for one.
And secondly, this is very, very spacious.
It's an entire bedroom up here.
No crouching.
There's plenty of room to walk on both sides.
This is a king size bed up here.
Look how high it is.
It's not on the ground either.
I know a lot of places do that.
Overall, this is a 10 out of 10 loft.
Now, if you, you know, don't want to climb the ladder
or anything like that, like I said,
there's the couch bed downstairs for you if you want.
But for a loft bedroom, this is amazing.
Anyway, we do have nightstands on both sides.
You can see up on the ceiling,
that pine and the wood beams
and these wood braces continue.
I love that.
Another fan up here.
The AC and heating units up here as well.
And over here on this side,
we have a nice little seating option
if you need to sit and get ready.
And of course, storage for your luggage
and your clothes right here.
But this is all open.
You can see up over here,
now into the living room.
Hello!
Other people sleeping on the couch.
Don't do that.
But this is the loft space.
It's really nice.
That's everything with this place.
Since the Host brothers built this themselves,
I asked them how much it cost them.
You guys built this yourself and did this all yourself.
How much did this place cost to build?
So overall, it was probably about 85,000.
It would have cost more if it wasn't done in-house.
You know, we did a lot of the free labor.
Yeah, it wasn't too bad at all.
It's not bad at all.
Because it can be so much more than that.
And you guys have a nice picture.
I saw the wood beams on the interior as well.
That stuff's not cheap.
Not at all.
It's a nice touch.
It is.
Now, I personally think that's a fantastic price
for something this cool.
And here's the even better part.
How much is it if you just want to come stay here
and check it out yourself a night?
How much do you charge a night?
So we charge 120 a night during the week
and 180 on the weekends.
That's awesome.
It's very cheap.
We really didn't want to price anyone out.
We want people to enjoy the property.
Fantastic price.
If you want to book this place,
the link is down in the description below.
I think this will work out for anybody.
Couples, small family.
There's two beds here.
Private 30 acres.
You got the river and of course the springs.
I'm here in the summer.
I'm starting to sweat already just being outside.
Natural springs is what the guys were telling me
to go check out.
That's their favorite thing to do.
What's your favorite thing to do in this area?
Each of you.
I like going to like Morrison Springs.
Morrison Springs.
What's that?
It's like a river that mixes in with like a nice spring.
But the water is just super clear, like turquoise blue.
The water is cold though.
So, I mean, if you're going to jump in.
It's refreshing though for a summer in Florida.
If you're coming here during the summer,
I would definitely go there.
Okay, what's your favorite thing?
I like spending my time in the river.
Fishing, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, swimming.
You can do that right along this river too.
Right along the river.
We try to dodge alligators every once in a while,
but we don't see them too often.
No, I still haven't seen an alligator out here.
I would have to say the springs too.
Yeah, and they're locals.
They know what to do.
That's what you got to do when you're staying here.
So, really cool spot.
Anyway guys, let me know what you think down in the comments.
I'll see you in the next one.
