Learn French with Alice
Hello kids! Do you want to learn how to say dog in French?
Let's start with the adult dog.
A male dog is called un chien.
Un is the article we use for a male and chien is dog.
Un chien. C-H-I-E-N. Chien.
Now, if the dog is female, we say it a bit differently.
We say un chien.
Notice how the article changes too?
Un is the article for female and chien is female dog.
Un chien. C-H-I-E-N-N-E. Chien.
If we don't know the gender of the dog, the neutral way is to say it like a male dog.
Un chien.
Now, how do we say puppy?
We say un chiot.
Un is the male article and chiot is puppy.
C-H-I-O-T. Chiot.
This one is the same whether the puppy is male or female, so it's easy.
It's un chiot every time.
Got it?
And if there are many dogs and puppies, in French, the words sound the same even though we add an S at the end.
It's only the article that sounds different.
We say des chiens, des chiennes and des chiots.
Oh gosh! So many dogs!
I'm not quite sure if I should hide under the sofa or maybe start dancing?
Do you know the doggy dance?
