Earth had a Second Giant Impact

New research indicates Earth's formation was a violent, multi-stage process. Rather than a single collision, evidence from noble gases suggests Proto-Earth formed from two giant impacts between planetary embryos before a final, massive collision with Theia created the modern Earth and Moon.
