The Tech House really needs some tools. It’s time for Linus to sort out the garage, and outfit it with everything we’ll need throughout the renovation.

Video Summary
AI GeneratedLinus and his team convert a garage into a functional maker space. The project involves upgrading the garage door opener, installing modular storage, and building a custom workbench. Despite several comedic mishaps with measurements and mounting hardware, the team successfully equips the shop with DeWALT tools and cooling solutions to create a productive workspace in a single day.
It's been pretty obvious throughout the early stages of the tech house that
we do not have all of the tools we need.
Mr. Linus, why don't you use the tool for the job?
Oh, to speed up our progress, we need to fix that.
And we're going to need a workspace to store them in.
Fortunately, the garage is finally drywalled and ready to go.
Or well, at least that side of it is.
It's not going to be a totally over-the-top build
since we already have a fully equipped workshop at the office.
But we're going to have everything we need to turn this
into a space that is going to serve us well throughout the rest of the renovation
and then easily convert to kind of like a maker space down the line.
All we're going to need is a little help from some old friends
and a little help from heating and cooling experts, Drio,
who sponsored this video and are going to keep us cool throughout the project
with their 516S and 765S misting fans.
Yeah, we're going to need them.
Before we even get into it, we want to make some changes to the overall space.
Right now, the garage door opener that we smartified
as part of our lawn mowing automation is over on that side.
But this side offers quicker access to the house
for unloading groceries and bipedal poop factories.
Also, the window here is going to take away
valuable space that could have been used for cabinetry or workbenches.
What we really want to do is put the workshop over on that side.
But in order to do that, we're going to have to get some stuff out of the way.
Now, one idea we had was to move the old garage door opener over to the other side,
but then we thought, how many years does this thing have left on it?
So we picked up a new belt-driven garage door opener
that should be a little bit quieter and should last longer.
It also doesn't have to be after the fact smartified
since it comes with Genie's Aladdin Connect.
So this one, we're still going to keep it here.
We're still going to use it,
but it'll just be for like when we have a project
that needs a little bit more ventilation
or if we want to move our sawhorses outside,
just press the button on the app and we're good to go.
I have never actually installed one of these.
Garage door openers are one of the I-can't-learn-everything things in my life.
Anybody got a ladder?
Ah, yes.
Our Featherlite HD seven-foot three-way ladder.
310 Canadian dollars and perfectly suitable
for around-the-home repairs and projects.
It's strapped, buddy.
There's a...
Oh, well, there's your problem right there.
Well, look, I haven't used a brand new ladder in many years.
Did we also buy all the other stuff?
Yeah, it came with it.
Okay, brilliant.
You know what?
Why don't we have Rhys continue taking a look at that?
You know, I also have never installed one of these.
Nice.
While Rhys gets started on that,
I want to get Jordan going on what is probably our biggest splurge.
We did want to keep this project pretty grounded,
but since we imagine that Guy, our hypothetical owner of this house,
is going to get a lot of use out of his future makerspace,
we wanted to lay a good foundation,
which is why we ordered this nine-piece storage cabinet from New Age,
which never arrived.
Apparently, the shipper just lost it.
So now we have this one from Siebel Tools.
It has a lot of the same modularity that we liked about the New Age one,
but it doesn't have casters on the middle pieces,
so reconfiguring it is going to be a little bit less fun,
but hey, that's a Jordan problem.
While he's working on that,
I'm going to get on making this workspace somewhat habitable
by getting these misting fans going.
I am freaking dying,
and I'm sure you guys are the same right now.
Contrary to popular belief,
misters can be used by women too.
Basically, the way these work is you put some water in them,
and that turns regular old fan cooling into evaporative cooling.
Kind of like how blowing on your arm doesn't work as well as
licking your arm, then blowing on it.
Okay, so this is pretty simple.
It's got a nice little float in it,
so it tells it to turn off the misting pump when it's out of water,
and it just goes in there a little something like that.
Nice.
Okay, here we go.
Oh, you can do it by percentages.
I'm gonna go 90% is the max.
Oh, dude!
Oh, we're misting now.
Dreo claims its turbo wind BLDC motors and hyper silent technology
make for a really quiet experience as low as 20 decibels,
so it's good for sleeping or relaxing without distracting noise too.
Is our plan to, you know,
sand the drywall mud and paint in here,
or are we leaving it kind of rustic?
We're really not sure.
Guy probably wouldn't,
but on the other hand, we kind of want to use this as a set,
so I figure we'll just decide afterwards.
A little bit of extra expense is probably okay for us,
even if he wouldn't do it.
Okay, well, let's put it in place for now.
Worst case scenario, we pull it off the wall,
hit it with some sandpaper and a roller,
and then we're off to the races.
How goes, Rhys?
Um, can I get one of you guys to help me open this door?
Yeah.
I gotta measure how close it is to the ceiling.
Oh, for sure.
Okay, oh, there's a lot of stuff.
There's things.
This is the problem with projects,
it's like you move something once,
and then you've got these damn crutches,
like you keep having to move them.
So we want to find-
The absolute-
The absolute highest that it gets.
So like, yeah, I think-
Let's say four and a half.
Yeah.
You can see from there?
Oh, heavens no.
Okay, all right.
I'm taking your word for it.
Yeah, I think about four and a half.
What do we do with this information?
Good question, good question.
I like to ask the good questions.
You do ask good questions.
Highest point of door travel, right?
That's just a point that they pointed out, so I got that.
Oh, what we were supposed to measure from the floor, Rhys.
Oh, reverse.
You can just measure the top and then the bottom, just minus.
Oh, yeah, I'm on it.
And then minus the other part.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm on it.
Hey, Linus, we do need you to talk about some of these tools
so we can open them up.
Oh, here you go.
All right, okay.
We need to unbox our tools
because the real reason Jordan's here
is to do a good old-fashioned buy or DIY.
We thought about buying just a flat surface
for Guy to pound away on things,
but then we thought,
would he buy that when YouTube exists?
So instead, we found this fantastic guide
for how to build your own workbench
out of just two by fours and some plywood in one hour.
But before Jordan can get started,
we gotta unbox some of these tools.
We went with the DeWALT ecosystem
because it was good enough
and we got a pretty okay deal
on this XR Atomic Series bundle.
We're probably gonna need one of each of these things
and once you're in the ecosystem,
that's how they get you.
So we got a multi-charger,
although this is more of an us thing than a Guy thing.
And then other than that, I think,
yeah, we picked up a staple gun.
And a miter saw.
Miter saw.
And then I don't know what this one is.
We've got a jigsaw over there.
A circular saw, rather.
Unbox them as needed.
And then Jordan, maybe once we've got the tools open,
we can start a timer
and see if we can actually build that table in an hour.
Jeez, all right.
We're reviewing other YouTubers' guides.
Oh, I get it.
So you're just kind of comparing to the other one
that's already in there.
I mean, that's, yeah.
Like just to make sure that I'm not doing it incorrectly.
Oh dude, sanity.
It's like basically the same place as the other one.
Dude, you're nailing it.
I'm sanity.
Wow.
That's almost too short.
What'd you just call me?
Short.
What, first time you're hearing that?
You're not even much taller than me.
Where's that from?
What do you mean, what is that from?
Is that from here?
It's about to be.
Wait, did you not put the screw in the other one?
No.
And how about that?
Is that making it into the edit?
This could take as long as creating the whole workbench.
It might, we'll see.
I've never made one of these before.
What is it?
It is a stand for the, it's in the script.
It's a stand for the, for the miter saw.
Wow, that's handy.
Then we can just drag it to wherever we need it.
If only I had some information about that,
that I could tell you guys.
It's in the script.
But people like unscripted content.
The reason that we got this
is because we don't really have room for a miter station in here.
We have this big wall of cabinets
that's taking up most of the space on the garage wall.
And we're going to have an island workbench.
So where's a miter station going to go?
Instead, we got this kit that you can just
roll on out of your garage when you need it
and hang it on the wall when you don't.
Easy.
I found a way to turn the mist up even higher, you guys.
It's this other button here.
Oh yeah.
Now we're talking.
Living in luxury now.
Are you still attaching that?
You get out.
Would you get out of here, Linus?
This is cool.
And then what?
It just like lifts up?
Maybe.
Put it here.
You can go over there.
Put that on that side.
All right.
Oh yeah, bud.
Something like that?
Sure, yeah, why not?
I'm on page one of the instructions.
I kind of gave up on those.
Now we just have to put the miter saw on top of that.
Okay.
Now, wouldn't we prefer a saw that definitely cuts?
As opposed to a miter saw?
We're gonna like blow the grown budget on this one.
I mean, if the budget is grown, you'd think it would be large enough.
Come on, that's not bad.
What are we doing now?
I'm gonna give you the ladder.
Okay.
And then we're just gonna hang the track.
Hang the track.
Okay.
Is it like that simple?
Like we just put the thing on and we just do it?
That's not an end.
I can't enough.
I have no idea.
Oh, damn.
How do I manage to hit my head on something I'm holding?
Like I never have to worry about hitting my head on things.
Tall people never hit their head because they're always worried about what's above them.
Shorter people always hit their head because they're never worried about what's above them.
Oh, hey, there's a paint bucket there that you could use maybe.
Yeah, I got it.
I got it now.
I thought you're always aware of what's above you.
Jesus Christ.
What a gut check.
There's stuff in this bucket.
You know, this isn't as bad as I kind of thought it would be.
Like you just put the bracket on there.
You just put all these together, put on the belt.
Cool.
Hey, Linus.
Do you think I overspec'd our miter saw?
Yes.
Why did we go so fancy?
I'm not sure.
I think I was just looking for the brand.
But this might have just gotten lost in the list of things I was making.
You know, the funniest part of that is there's going to be people out there that are like,
Dewalt more like the dumpster.
For what we're doing, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, probably all the same.
Tyson, the editor, says I'm not allowed to work on the garage door opener anymore.
So I have to put the feet on these cabinets.
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
You're not starting yet, are you?
We haven't started the timer.
I'm testing.
Oh, perfect.
Okay.
Is it good?
Oh, sorry.
I stabbed you.
I'll live.
Oh, look, you got drawings and everything.
I kind of tweaked it because we're not using the same casters and stuff.
So measurements have to change a little bit and our space is a little different.
Okay.
It'll be fine.
One hour and 10 minute workbench.
We got this.
Okay.
I'm starting the timer.
Calorie goal reach.
Look at that.
Good job, Linus.
I'm proud of you, Linus.
Let the record show.
First cut.
Do we not have a stud finder?
No.
Didn't think of it, my bad.
I mean, look at the state of this roof.
I would just start going.
Start drilling?
Okay.
That's kind of what I've done already.
Drill, baby, drill.
Drill, baby.
As they say.
All right, up we go.
Nice.
Are there handles?
Yeah, they're on the inside right now.
You just have to switch them around.
Oh, oh, all right.
We are getting so many mini episodes of buyer DIY today, Jordan.
Buyer DIY, what, like Japanese dining table?
Like what am I looking at here?
Totally.
Jordan, is there a reason you're using the impact drill instead of the standard one?
Because I want it to sink in a bit more in this case,
because these screws are too short.
So you want it to sink in without drilling a countersink?
Pretty much.
And it's softwood, so it'll work.
Another benefit is it can be a little bit easier on the wrist
as you reach the end if it's tapping it versus really torquing the drill.
But mainly I grabbed this one first.
Jordan, we come bearing a new work surface.
Okay, there.
How's that for a work table?
Beautiful, thank you.
You can put so much work in here.
Oh, God.
Oh, no.
That's character.
Oh, wow.
They really don't use that much water.
Sick.
Boss taking a break as usual.
A very short one, okay?
Just want to do a quick, I don't know, 15 minute check in here.
Hey, oh, you're down to 40 minutes, actually.
I got that side done.
Oh.
I'm just doing this other side and then I got to connect the two and put the top one.
This is a one hour workbench.
Oh, yeah, it's easy.
Well, that's awesome.
Nothing to it, really.
Well, don't let me distract you.
So we're still working on this, huh?
Yeah, it didn't come with like the proper mounting brackets.
It came with these stupid little flimsy things.
So we tried to like kind of bend them into place, but they're so flimsy.
And the stud is so far off.
Hey, Reese, why'd you bend them?
In this, it's just straight.
You're telling me.
Is this just a Home Depot trip?
Let's get a stud finder because who knows?
I mean, there's an outlet there.
So maybe there just is a stud right here.
Worst case scenario, Jordan has leftover two by four.
So whatever, we just find another stud somewhere, screw into that.
Unless you have a better method because like I just, I was left alone.
Scared and alone.
Are we planning to cut down the plywood at all?
Well, putting it on top of it.
We're going to flip this over.
No, no, we're not.
That was the plan we talked about.
This is way easier.
Trust me.
I think we're actually going to beat the one hour mark.
Nevermind the 110 that I buffered because we're filming it.
That's freaking awesome.
Great one hour table design.
Thank you.
No, not you.
You didn't design it.
Speaking of glorious.
I modified the design.
That's true.
Nice.
Okay, so exactly where I said it was.
But look where I drilled.
Where the thing is mounted.
Okay, hold on.
Hold on.
How'd you, how'd you manage to miss it, Reece?
You missed it by like.
Eight millimeters.
It's right there.
Is that mount still usable after what you did to it?
No, absolutely not.
I think we just use wood.
I think wood is the way to go.
Wood, the forever material.
Well, I screwed this up.
We're going to flip this over.
No, no, we're not.
That was the plan we talked about.
This is way easier.
Trust me.
But that's good news because we can get better plywood.
And with one minute and 18 seconds to spare.
I adjusted on the fly because I changed the dimension.
Right, right, right, right.
And I didn't change it on the top.
Right, right, right, right, right, right, right.
So we're a couple inches short.
Hey, Jordan, a crazy idea.
Could we just cut a strip of plywood for now and just.
What I was going to do is actually put a,
I'll get two by four here.
Send something to butt up against.
Totally intentional.
Totally planned it.
All right, look at that.
We are going to need those self-leveling feet.
It's probably like four degrees forward.
Yeah, buddy.
The little curve behind it.
Yeah, yeah.
The last piece for the cabinets here is putting up these bad boys.
And while we could go find the studs.
And screw them directly into them.
Here's a tech tip.
How about we don't do that.
And we just put a piece of plywood on the wall.
Mounted to the studs.
And then we can just drill wherever the hell we want.
Okay, here we go.
Mr. Jordan.
He's got to find the studs now.
Yeah, well, we should know where they are because.
Oh, well, we should.
Well, one of them is here.
So we can just put this one in now.
All right.
You're in.
Tyson, the editor.
With your permission.
That was very stealthy.
I would like to return to the garage door opener storyline.
Please, for the love of God, Tyson.
Today is not my day.
Oh, wow.
Look what you made.
Isn't it beautiful?
This is like.
Good job, Reese.
This is like grade four woodworking class.
Oh, it's beautiful.
In fairness to Reese, it's really not going anywhere.
It's not going anywhere.
Like I could probably hang off of this.
Do not hang off of it.
But I probably could.
Are you guys ready to find out if it works?
Can you imagine?
Very exciting moment, you guys.
Scary, scary moment.
Reese's whole day.
Exciting and fear are one emotion.
Ah, no, it's going the wrong way.
Reese, Reese, Reese, stop it.
Yeah, stop.
Okay, so we found the remote.
It goes the wrong way.
Now what?
Is there a reverse button on the thing?
Oh, yeah, buddy.
Let's go.
Now that the mist is going in full, like that is downright chilly.
We used like a much larger version of these for the first whale land.
And it was like pretty darn effective.
But I wasn't sure what to expect from like a residential grade one.
And no wetness or residue because the droplets are so fine.
That's pretty cool.
Dreo says it's a 17 micron ultra fine mist
with droplets that evaporate quickly and leave surfaces totally dry.
You want some more cool?
Oh, yes.
Oh my, that's wonderful.
They don't even have to try to get us to shill these things in these conditions.
Seriously.
I'm taking this with me.
There's a desktop version too, the 516S.
And it's better for smaller spaces.
Like we're going to put it straight on the workbench here.
Heck yeah.
Freaking awesome.
We should have swept out this corner before we put this here.
That's set dressing.
Set dressing.
We want the workshop to look lived-ins.
All right.
Who says we're not going to use anything from the old owner?
This is perfect.
Stash our sawhorses right here.
Nice.
It's actually a really handy shelf.
Yeah.
All right, Linus.
You ready?
No.
Huge moment.
Let's do it.
Maybe stand a little bit.
I trust it.
I don't.
It's not going.
Oh, yeah.
Is that actually like...
I think that's gotta come back here.
That sounded good.
Okay.
All right.
Come back, come back, come back.
Movie magic.
This is the first time we've tried this.
I'm going to stand over here a little.
Duck and cover.
Okay.
Three, two, one.
Did it stop?
Maybe it just needs a little...
Stop, stop, stop, stop.
Sorry.
I wasn't trying to stop it.
Is it latched over here?
Oh, yes, it is.
It's latched.
Okay.
Well, that might explain it.
Okay.
Back it off.
Here we go.
All right.
We'll try it one more time.
One more time.
This is the first time.
First time.
It's the first time we've done it.
Whoa.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
Oh, man.
Oh, that's bent.
Oh, how'd you get...
How'd you guys get it so far off center?
Oh, my God.
You guys are like a foot off.
You know what's actually good about it, though,
is it's very easy to move
because there's only two screws
actually holding it up there.
So it's perfect.
Last, I have one other surprise for you.
It's something else that I over-specced.
Oh, you can never spend too much on a good vise, though.
We actually got it on sale.
We got it for the price of a much smaller one.
Oh, yeah.
That's the good stuff right there.
You won't get me upset about
just a nice big benchtop vise.
All right.
You might say they're my vise.
I will never say that.
Okay.
This looks freaking awesome for one day of work, though, hey?
Admittedly, we had a bit of help.
This terrific shelf was already here,
but I feel like I could already get real work done in here.
Wow.
This is the first time we're doing this, right, Linus?
And the garage works now.
Wow.
It's gonna work, right?
It's, yeah.
It actually looks perfect, right?
You said it looked perfect last time.
That's what I, and I meant it.
Holy crap, it freaking works.
God, and first try.
This actually turned out so much better than,
no offense, I expected.
Why'd you look directly at me when you said that?
Great work, everyone.
This is freaking awesome.
We're gonna get,
you can fit so much getting work done in this bad boy.
And a massive shout out again to Drio,
who legitimately actually made today survivable.
Genuinely.
No, actually, though.
If you guys enjoyed this video,
why not check out the last time we partnered with Drio
when we used one of their air conditioners to cool a computer.
There were some issues with that.
Well, yeah, but it was really cold.
