A mother and child visit their local library's seasonal summer used book sale. After navigating a crowded event, they use coupons earned from a summer learning challenge to supplement their purchases. The pair shares a \"haul\" of their finds, ranging from non-fiction and craft supplies to a diverse collection of classic literature.
Hello. It's good to see you guys again. Today we are at our library's used book sale. They have it
four times a year. It's a seasonal thing, so this is the summer sale. We pulled in and we thought
we were here really early because there were only like two cars ahead of us. However, a whole line
then showed up behind us, so I guess we got here at perfect time. How many books do you think you're
gonna get, mom? I think one. One? Okay. I like to I like to cap it at ten dollars in here, so I'm gonna go
six. That's my guess. Tell them about the free coupons you have. Oh, and we did the... there's a summer learning
challenge at our library, and if you do the challenge, one of the prizes is a coupon for
one free book up to a two dollar value at the sale. And you missed a dollar and two dollars, right? Yeah, exactly.
So we each got a coupon because we each did the summer learning challenge,
and now that we're all learned up, now we can each get a free book.
All right, well let's get in there. Okay.
All right, we just got back from the sale, and we want to show you everything that we got.
I guess that I got six books, but I ended up getting seven. Mom, how much did you get? Well,
I either, however you want to look at it, I either got two or I got five, because one thing was four
for a dollar, so I guess you could say. Okay, all right. This sale was very, very busy. I don't feel
like I got as good of filming as I did the last time I posted one of these videos. It's hard not
to get run over. Oh, it's hard not to get run over. Very, very busy. Lots of people, but I think I ended
up finding everything that I got in the classics section. Yeah, all right. Mom, do you want to show
them what you got? Yes. Okay. Okay. My first book, this is a non-fiction book, and it's called
The Hidden Messages in Water, and I heard about this guy. His name's Masaru Emoto, and he's a
renowned Japanese scientist, and he does a lot of research into water and water molecules, and
our body's made up of mostly water, and what he would do is he takes water and speaks harshly to
it or says nice things to it, and the molecules form either beautiful patterns when it's spoken
nice to, you know, and broken like ugly patterns when it's spoken harshly to. I'll just show you
this real quick because I know it sounds really crazy, but he's very, no, he's really renowned.
This one is when I think 50s jazz music is played, and the water molecules made that pattern.
This is with heavy metal music. They made like this kind of pattern. Anyway, I thought it was
really interesting. I want to read about it because, like, yeah, it's cool. More goes on
in the world than we realize, so I just thought that that was really kind of interesting. Plus
that was two dollars, and you used your coupon on it. That's right. I used my two dollar coupon on that.
Then my other thing, totally unrelated to that, in a rubber band pack you got four for a dollar,
and I'm learning, or I'm getting better at crocheting. Anyway, I got four crochets. I'm
going to make socks. Nice. It's your Christmas present. I want a pair, yeah. Animals. Cute.
More animals. Cute. And I think that you should put a bar of soap in it, and you scrub it.
I mean, yeah, whatever. So either way you look, I either got two things, or I got five. Score. Yeah.
All right, and you only spent one dollar. That's right, because I used my coupon. All right, well, I,
as I said a second ago, everything I got was kind of from the classics section, so I ended up
getting seven books. I used my coupon to get this one for free, the Gulag Archipelago. Yeah.
No, that's not right. What is it? How do you say? Archipelago? I think. Archipelago? Yeah. Okay, well,
I trust your judgment, so Gulag Archipelago. This is just experiences in the Gulag Word Camp.
That's gonna be a heavy one. Yeah. Yeah, and it kind of scopes over arrests, interrogations,
actually being in the camp, like it covers a lot of things. So some Gulag experiences. I got that
for free with my coupon. Next off, I feel like I got a wide range of things here. This, this is a,
about a Korean monk. This was written in 17th century Korea, and what this is, is it is about
this monk that he fell into temptation, and so kind of as a punishment, he was reincarnated into
like the perfect, the most ideal man, and so he goes into this life full of very material and
sensual accomplishments, as it says on the back of the book, and he has everything he wants beyond
his wildest dreams, but kind of as he has everything, he starts to remember the the
truths of the Buddhist teachings, and so it's kind of of the final message of living simply and living
well. Is it set current day, or is it set, well, current day in 17th century? I don't know. That'd
be interesting. Yeah, I don't know, but it has some cute, it has some pretty pictures in it and
stuff, and I don't get into the Asian sphere very much, so I thought I needed to get that one. Next
off, do you guys remember how a couple weeks ago I said that I've been looking for James Baldwin
used for years, and I have never, ever, ever once found him used anywhere? I did it. I did it, though
this is just the fire next time. This is just two letters, so this is pretty short. I paid two dollars
for this. Oh, I forgot to say this was two dollars. I paid two dollars for this, and it is just
two letters written at the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, so it's a little bit of
civil rights letters. James Baldwin used. I had to pick it up. Next off, we have The Idiot by
Dostoevsky. They also had his, they had a couple of his stuff, but they also had his The Possessed,
and I wanted to get that, but it was kind of busted up for two dollars, so I decided to put that one
back, but I got The Idiot. This is about this guy that is an idiot, I would assume, but I think it's
about this guy that I think he's like a good, you know, he's a good guy, but then he falls into this
society that's wretched and kind of how that affects a person. I think that's an accurate
description of it, but obviously I haven't read it yet, but anything by Dostoevsky is gonna be
great, so two dollars for that. Next off, I love Herman Hesse, and so anytime I see him, I gotta
pick him up, too. This was only a dollar, thankfully, because it is pretty small. This is, again, kind of
just on this finding of the self that is usually his main theme, and this is about this German
choir master who goes, he's invited on this expedition with the League, which is a secret
society with members that include Mozart, Albertus, Mangus, and they go on this, they
transverse both space and time, encountering Noah's Ark and Don Quixote, and so they go, the final
destination is the East, but by the time they get there, the entire group has fallen apart, and
everybody kind of hates each other, and so thinking back on the, thinking back on the journey later,
the main character realizes what he did wrong in the journey. I don't know, sounds pretty good. Again,
just anything by Herman Hesse, I enjoy that. Next off, for one dollar, I got One Day in the Life of
Ivan Danasovich. This is in the chaos of World War II, a dutiful Russian soldier is wrongfully
convicted of treason and sentenced to 10 years in a Siberian labor camp, and so it's one day in
this guy's life in this camp, and he is conceded to all things evil with patience, dignity, and
enduring strength. So, the strength of man in the ultimate test. So, I guess that'll work good with
the Gulag book. And that was a dollar, I think I said that. And then for two dollars, my final book
is The Long Ships. I think I've said this before, but these NYRB editions, they're always kind of,
every single time they're a hit. It's like some, I don't know, whatever they publish,
every single time it's a hit. And I've heard that this is a really good one, The Long Ships.
This is a Viking story about this one guy named Red Orm, and he's canny, courageous, and above
all lucky. And so it's just a bunch of different little Viking adventures that take him through,
I don't know, Viking adventures. So, that sums that one up. Adventure story. I don't, I don't know,
I don't really delve into Vikings much, but I thought that was pretty good. I saw you pick out
some strange books, but then I guess you could say that about me. Yes, yeah, yeah, look at what
you got. But, yeah, so I spent ten dollars, plus I used my coupon, and I got these seven awesome
books. Yeah. So, score. Yeah. Mom, are you satisfied? Are you glad you went? Yeah, I hung in
there a little bit more this time. Like, it's so crowded and uncomfortable. I kind of backed off
last time. It's easy to just give up in there. Yeah. Two times. Yeah, I don't think you did.
I gave you my two dollar coupon. You did. That was generous. But I hung in there.
Worth it. All right. So, that's it for our haul and our video today. I hope you guys had a good time
coming along with us. Which one are you going to read first? I don't know. I'm kind of leaning
towards this one. Yeah, you seem to like that. I'm into that. All right. Well, I guess I will
see you guys next Sunday. Bye-bye. Bye-bye.
