In anticipation for Rome 2 multiplayer I am continuing to hone my skills online in Shogun 2. The idea is to get you guys acquainted with my tactics and play style. Please leave constructive criticism!
Hey what's up guys this is OakleyHatF one more time.
This is going to be a multiplayer game I've played against WizKot.
So I've been super super excited for Rome 2 Total War and so I've been playing so much
Shogun.
I'm just trying to get myself attuned to the game mechanics and all that stuff again.
And just also to share with you guys my style of gameplay.
I'm trying to get you hyped and show, I mean I guess I'll say try and show off kind of
my skills.
You know I do consider myself a pretty skilled Total War player.
I love playing psychological games with my enemies and having all sorts of strategies
that I would love to share with you guys.
So you know I'll be putting together these videos here showing you guys kind of my different
strategies especially when Rome 2 comes out.
So this was a particularly good battle I found.
So up here I'm charging ahead.
You saw before on the, before I had my light cavalry going to secure the side flank.
On the other side here I have my Bow Cav and always I try and bait my enemy into traps
so I let him get deceptively close and then I retreat my Bow Cav.
That's great guard chasing me and those of you who play Shogun know that's a very expensive
unit and you can see here he's really chasing me down here.
Boom he basically gets shot up in the flank right here by some of my mounted gunners and
other troops that are going to charge out of the forest.
So that's an expensive unit of great guard that I just took down by a good amount of
men.
You can see my Bow Cav on the right really didn't take that many losses.
So that's something I love to do is bait my enemy and take him into traps.
I have pretty good micromanagement so while he's distracted you know he thinks he's got
me good on the chase that's when I go ahead and engage.
So all of a sudden I you know precipitate this attack and launch all my forces.
He's trying to retreat and I know this great guard was going to try and get home safe so
what I do is I try and chase it off with a combination of Bow Cav and also my mounted
gunners.
So seeing as he's distracted there I'm going to come back over here and dismount my forces
try and capture that.
He moves up over here I take advantage of the forces in order to whittle him down.
You can see what my opponent is doing is moving in more cavalry to try and trap my guys.
I get out just in the nick of time.
I have a pretty good sense of when my opponent will get there.
Again you know I have more troops hidden in the woods I anticipate him coming after me.
In the background you can see right there I have moved my cavalry around the flank so
all this while you know I'm kind of walking my cav letting him get close and he turned
around right there he knew I was up to something.
And so basically what I do is I turn around to try and feign a charge try and pull him
in pull him in that's always what I'm doing in this game.
You can see here I have so many troops in this vicinity that I can just kind of swarm
around him and play with his troops essentially and every time he decides to turn around and
retreat which is you know the better option I'll just pepper him with arrows.
So that's something I recommend you guys do is play with your enemy have hidden forces
here and there stay mobile move around don't be scared to retreat, attack, retreat, attack
and in the meantime keep whittling down his forces.
Anyway you can see right there I anticipate him coming after my archers I move them back
move my spears forward at the same time he's like he's fed up so I retreat my whole body
here to get a more favorable position so that's what you want to do don't let yourself be
drawn into these battles if you're winning you know retreat and attack in a different
way.
Now I'm not being a coward I'm just being strategic and what I do is you know I try
and hold up his advance because I know I'm not ready so I'll charge him in the back right
here I didn't necessarily mean to hit his bulletproof monks but I was distracted elsewhere
but that's something you've got to do is if your opponent is moving up too aggressive
on you throw some cav around the back and if he's going to engage you well then he's
going to have some cavalry behind him so you can see right there by engaging in the back
with some light basically disposable cavalry I'm able to draw off some of his forces away
from the battle and so I'm having his cavalry bounce around slowly lose forces all the while
his main front is not able to fully engage me which allows me more time to reform to
harass to do all these things so you can see here my forces on the side are going to start
to envelop him I forced him down to the low ground by shifting my forces and then I was
able to basically corner him here it's all about positioning guys it's all about attacking
and retreating as his guys try to redeploy I'll just pepper him with arrows and that's
something that's going to be really big in Rome too because you won't have match locks
excuse me mounted cavalry and arrows and bows are going to be everything in a battle in
terms of forcing your opponent to react punishing him if he retreats and kind of playing and
poking at him and that's something that I'm going to try and show you guys how to do once
Rome 2 comes out is how to use these forces to your advantage when to decide to engage
when to retreat you can see for example right there on the right I have those two forces
right here that basically don't do much besides distract his forces and pull them away from
the main battlefield anyway I saw that his forces here were dismounted he remounts but
I'm able to engage him with light cavalry and look at the back look at the ridge right
there I'm moving in some gunners in order to engage him so light cavalry taking on this
great guard that are dismounted I get a bonus attack on him by engaging him when he's immobile
plus I put in some shots on the top so that's really what you have to do take advantage
of your opponent's immobility and even though I'll get like you know one or two shots before
I have to retreat I did damage to his great guard I drew this cavalry back as they chase
me I shoot him with arrows if he wants to chase off my one unit with two cav units that's
fine I'll welcome it that means two less cav units over here it allows me to you know strike
with these small forces you can see there I definitely evade some of his forces and
then I charge in and try and hit his cavalry on the side his bow cav on the side you can
see here he's chasing my forces needlessly and that allows me to kind of play around
with his forces here and move in with my archers here I know his matchlocks are all that are
holding him together here so I'm just taking my time I'm whittling them down knowing that
they're going to try and redeploy because of the arrows that's when I move up my very
own matchlocks and I'm going to take shots on him you can see his cavalry in the back
are still chasing my horses his other horses in the near you know right here trying to
chase off my forces but again I always have supporting troops go ahead and engage me that's
fine you're going to lose right here he's you know he's getting fed up I get off some
initial shots and I start retreating again guys you know there's no well there is dishonor
and just retreating but look at this here I get off some shots and retreat because he
does have monks in the background shooting me there's no point for me to engage I'm going
to retreat he's in the woods he's in a superior position I'm going to fall back and play to
my advantages don't always feel you have to engage even if you have what seems like a
pretty strong advantage don't always engage right away wait for the most opportune moment
so you can see for example there he gave up on the chase his cavalry are coming back and
so I'm falling back waiting till his units are basically spread out and that's when I'm
going to go ahead and recharge his forces when his troops are all spread out you know
if he uses war cry it won't affect as many troops and then I can go ahead and pick apart
his forces I have more forces which means I can surround his troops that are now spread
out and that's exactly what I'm going to do I'm going to have my general come in and he's
going to have some strikes you can see here my my cav here they're doing absolutely nothing
but distracted his great guard and that's what you have to do be willing to sacrifice
some units throw them away for the greater good of your army you see because I spread
out his forces here I'm able to shoot the gap with my general my general shoots the
gap he's going to go ahead and engage his general his generals in standard fight that's
very potent for increasing morale of your forces but because I spread out his forces
again I'm able to take advantage of it so you can see here his disparate forces are
being picked apart I'm able to charge in the back of my cavalry here you know reduce the
morale of his troops my general unit here charges into the back of his swords that would
otherwise win that battle and in that way I'm able to turn the tide of this fight so
guys there's I mean it's hard to basically put this in lesson form but this is going
to be a key battle that kind of shows you the strategies the techniques and that's what
I want to do is kind of have these lessons of repetition where I bring you these battles
where I employ these tactics over and over again to show you really what you want to
do in order to win and it's a winning strategy I mean you can see here this was a very good
opponent he he had good micro he had good unit composition but I was able to whittle
them down neutralize his great guard and basically route his superior forces here by spreading
them apart and you can see here his cavalry finally come back they would have been decisive
had they not chased off my forces but because I was able to distract and pepper them enough
with my other cavalry you know he ended up having to waste his great guard his most valuable
forces in some you know some fool's errand chasing down some bocab and so that's what
you want to do again you know lightning strikes on his general where and whenever possible
you know take advantage of the opportunities as they strike hit that general you know come
out hit these cavalry in the back that's what's going to win you the battle it's not always
a big decisive blow it's these small jabs here and there that accumulate and form a
crescendo that will eventually you know finalize in your ultimate victory so take every small
opportunity and make it work for you that's what I'm going to say with these types of
battles and I'm that's the strategy I'm going to keep promoting you know sometimes I might
have a more focused battle on a specific tactic but anyways you know I like to go ahead and
recap this at the very end so for example neutralizing great guard and other strong
cavalry forces bait them with something that's tempting so cav forces are great mobile units
that are cheap bait him into an ambush so for example here I have matchlocks but maybe
in Rome of course where you don't have matchlocks you would have a bunch of bows or hidden spears
something like that take advantage of your opponents you know distraction here his troops
are dismounted and they remounted a last time go ahead and strike him when you know he's
not you know focusing on it again even though I just get two three shots off here it's enough
to whittle down his forces every shot on the great guard counts then I run away use your
cavalry forces not only for the damage they can do but also the distractions that they
can cause here the main point is going to be don't always feel like you have to engage
assess your enemy so here again he was strong in the woods he had the support of his matchlocks
he had compact forces retreat and then engage again when he's spread out in order to exploit
the gaps in his forces that's a winning strategy again combined with a distraction of the cavalry
forces it'll allow you to have better opportunities to route and individually micro your forces
in order to combat say his general right here be active in the use of your general I'm sure
we'll have mounted general troops in Rome you're probably going to want to use them
very effectively shooting the gaps here running around reinforcing your troops you know increasing
their morale so there's a lot to these battles and I just hope you guys can learn and you
guys can enjoy from these battles I really really like doing them I like teaching you
guys these lessons and I hope it's something that I can do to improve your skill as a total
war player and really enjoy the game a lot more anyways thanks so much for watching see
you guys next time
