A surfer and his companion, Mahina, travel to remote islands in Polynesia to chase a massive Pacific swell. While avoiding the crowded spots in Tahiti, they explore isolated reefs, navigate dangerous sea urchin populations, and enjoy high-quality, solitary surf sessions before ending their trip with a playful coconut-opening competition.
Packing up all our things. We're probably gonna have to eat some fast food in the airport.
How many calories did you burn? Oh like 1,300. Holy smokes. Jealous. That calf is like
torn feeling. Flying cats up. The 30 high modulus. 30 inch mast. The 91 new high aspect
Lawrence tail wing.
No you weren't. I was the only guy at Tickle Bay. Oh you're like I gotta go down.
I was paddling out and you guys were going. Look at these legs. No sunburn.
So good. Nathan. Then we're in the back of the truck. Little pluffies. We're trying to go look
for a rental car or a moped. Whoa sit down buddy. Sit down you're stressing me out. Some huge swell
He almost got cooked. Did it go in?
Oh no. Damn there's some crazy energy over here. Whoa whoa that was unreal.
Is that a spit? I could not tell. Holy smokes that looks so gnarly. I swear that's a spit.
So there's some monster swell and Mahina and I decided to go to some of the more
remote islands in the pacific. We knew there was a huge amount of swell out here
while a lot of other guys chased to Tahiti. We flew to a different part of Polynesia,
not French Polynesia, but just check what happens when one of these swells
hits some of these smaller islands. So far look at this massive energy. So exciting to see all the
swell like this hitting different reefs you've never looked at before.
But so far it just looks like big straight reefs, lots of blowjobs, but
the fact that there's a swell this big is super exciting so we're going to keep looking around.
If we did find something I don't even know what we would do with it because
he's alone but it'd be really cool just to see it even if we just watch. But if we find something
that has the right risk ratio and worth the paddle then we'll probably get a session and
keep looking. Look at that. It's crazy and you can see the swells rolling by on the horizon.
Easily 20 foot swells out there. Hitting the reef is probably 12 to 15 foot.
Monsters breaking in the distance.
Oh my gosh that was so gnarly. What? That's a 20 foot wave probably.
Those explosions are crazy. So big, so dangerous. Hardly a straddle out. Well that's a bummer.
Octopus! Octopus! Oh it's all red. Ew I can't tell if that was naturally taken apart
or someone did. Yes it is. Ew don't touch it. It is right?
Dude I turned into a track star. Come on tell me that was impressive. You went so fast.
I was trying to get my phone out to film you because it was so funny.
Folding. Holy moly. Spitting. That was so gnarly. Careful man. Whoa. It was so close.
Huge one. Whoa that was crazy. Look at this. Oh my gosh.
Right when that mega set came.
Care to explain the inspiration behind this style? So yesterday after some inspection of the reef
there's a serious urchin problem and a lot of dry reef, a lot of live shallow reef. So I'm taking
these to the next level and we've got Vansurf, warm water, booties, hydro tights. These are epic.
Florence Marine makes them now. They sold out their first run but there should be more dropping soon.
I just got my normal career board shorts and obviously the rash guard for the sun.
Got my board that's been through it all this year. Still kicking. Fins as you can see took a little
bit of a beating here. Showing the up close and personal. So I'll keep using these hopefully no
more reef touches but now I should be able to tip toe across and hopefully not step on any more
urchins. We'll mark it price only. Yeah and we're gonna go try to get some barrels. Conditions are
clean today and there's this little peeling left right up front. One body we're out or maybe no one
out now so we'll get some waves and keep exploring. Yesterday I got an urchin toe and that was like
oh that was the least. I thought it would be worse but it wasn't so all good.
My watch died in my um session yesterday. Lost hours logged. Currently at 230 or something
miles hours surfed and 670 miles so pretty cool. Oh it's a perfect one. Oh it's kind of cold.
Oh it's got stuck.
Wow it's pumping.
Holy ---- it's firing. Oh oh I'm actually getting poked. Okay they're clearing out
they're clearing out. The closer we get to breaking waves the less urchins there are.
Spikes in my booties. There's definitely a little channel I need to be in.
Looking this way. The direction today is insane. Just me and my new buddy Eric living it.
So
The surf's up team. Houston we have a problem.
Shout out to my Taste Buds crew at GoPro.
You know who you are.
Wow, these conditions are insane.
Post surf, coffee, got my banana apple porridge, baby food, killer when you're on trips.
Just had a pretty special little session, just epic little left again, peeling, barreling,
shallow, clear blue water, such a dream, just taking turns with one other guy, there's no
one else around.
Wow, it's still going, oh my gosh, that was such a sick one, and yeah, we looked around
again and we're on the side of the island, now the main swell's not hitting because the
wind is on shore there, so we found a little corner, found a little way to surf.
It's not giant by any means or crazy, but it's as much fun as you could have at a wave
that size, so that in itself is a score, definitely, and yeah, it's interesting when you think
about probably what you would do if you even found something, some of the water we saw
moving earlier, just crazy powerful swell, what do you do if you do find something that's
you're like, whoa, that's surfable, but you're alone, you've got to play the risk game.
There's a whole other exciting part of doing trips like this, what are you going to find,
what are you going to do when you find it, how are you going to figure a way to safely
surf it, but also get a gnarly one, and then to have a session like this, hopping between
all that and the searching is just like the best part of surf travel, I think, so blessed
to be doing it.
I'm sure other parts of Polynesia are probably pumping, I mean, I'm assuming Tahiti's probably
going off, this swell covered nearly the entirety of the Pacific, so pretty crazy size storm
system, and we're just on a random dot in the middle of that Pacific, avoided the Fiji
and the French Polynesia and the Micronesia for some other zones, and I'm glad we did,
so that's it, hope everyone's scoring.
Noteworthy mention, urchins, en masse out there, I had pulling spikes out of my reef
walkers and I wasn't stepping on them and killing them, it would go straight through
into my foot, but the few tips I did hit, crazy amount of urchins out there, all over
this reef, this reef is super light, I did not want to fall, it was shallow enough and
powerful enough that I was like, I did not want to get smashed into this reef.
Also shout out to me, he never filmed me for three hours.
Rode my 6.0 that I've been riding all year, the same Next Step 6.0 that I rode at Cape
and all these other little slabs, it's getting real beat up, but it's still going.
I love when you have a board that lasts a long time through multiple noteworthy sessions,
you start to get real connected to it.
So that's all I got, you guys will have seen some of the epic GoPro clips I caught.
Now I'm going to drink my coffee and watch some of these peelers come through.
Oh, that one, holy smokes, that one was crazy.
Hey, oh yeah, you know we're going to open up coconuts?
Hi.
Okay, two coconuts, we're going to get two rocks, me and Mahina compete who can open
their coconuts the cleanest, the fastest, the smoothest.
So a clean cut counts for points, speed counts for points, and how much water is left in
the coconut counts for points.
Oh, that's a good one.
Okay, this is the equivalent of making fire to earn the third spot on survival.
Great.
So.
You're going from now, we have to have the most amount of water.
The most water, the cleanest open, fire, and gotten up before you head back in.
Okay, and let's say, okay, three, two, one, go.
Hey, it's losing water.
Guy, I want more time, I want more time.
Because you lose a lot of water.
Look how much water I have left.
I have a little bit came out.
Came out.
I can't show.
No, you lose.
I mean, I better win.
Wait.
Looks like you won your foil race yesterday.
Survival.
Okay, it's about survival.
You said time too.
I could have did that too.
The cleanest.
Oh, that's not a good beat.
Wait, wait, it's not over, it's not over.
I will say, I accidentally went totally crooked.
Babe, come on.
Oh, it's so sweet.
Seriously?
When this reveal goes down, it's going to be the next.
It's a tie, because I win first.
I'm going to drink, by the way.
Hold your horses, hold your horses.
Three something minutes later and it took forever.
Check out his YouTube to see the whole video.
Babe, seriously.
Hold on, it's going to be worth the wait, worth the wait.
What did you drink all night?
Maximum survival.
Ice cold.
Can you see this?
Was it worth the wait?
No.
The perfection.
I'm proud of you for going slow, you never.
Here, come this way.
Can you come this way real quick?
Or put your hand out?
Whoa.
Here, put your hand out.
There's no way I can lose with that.
We'll leave it up to the fans to decide that one.
Mahina is fast and furious.
Nathan with the speed power float.
Maximum water.
Least amount of damage.
The perfect meat to drink to gourd ratio.
Sorry Mahina, I got nothing for you, head back to camp.
No, sorry Nathan, your whole tribe died.
Babe, we're getting the craziest shot right now.
Yeah.
