Ling Chi is back tackling a lesson from 108 Flowers Book 1 by Ning Yeh. The cover flower of Book 1 is the Amaryllis. She paints on our large size pre-mounted xuan paper, which offers a way to present a finished painting ready for framing and presentation without the traditional wet mounting process. Paint-a-long with Ling Chi and enjoy!
This is Ling Qi, brush painting for beginners from Oriental Art Supply. Today we're going to do
the amaryllis from Ning Ye's 108 Flowers. It's the cover page and there is instruction inside the book.
The paper we're going to use is our large size pre-mounted board, pre-mounted paper. And
we have some questions about the moisture control. So I want to show you a little bit about
what is involved when it comes to moisture control in this particularly pre-mounted paper.
Because the pre-mounted paper, if you're used to unmount it, then the moisture will go through to
the paper. And this particular paper, sometimes it repels the moisture. So it starts kind of
bleeding through it. So you need to make sure that the body is drier and the tip is wet. And also to
control the moisture, you can use some glue in the water or Sakura white before you paint.
So I can show you both ways when we are doing it today. So on the glue paper, glue it.
So what I will do is I will put some water in this dish to have a little drop. That should
be able to help you to control the moisture. And then I'm going to mix well this water with the
glue. So after I wash my brush, I would dip into the glue water before I load the color. Today
we're going to use three brushes. One is our large double happiness. One is full lotus. One is
our small detail brush. And that is the mouse tail. Or you can use your pre-happy dot.
And so the difference of this two large brush is that some of the brush, I want to have more
a tip to the stroke. Then I will use the large double happiness. And some stroke,
I just want a more fuller stroke. Then I will use the full lotus. And then this small brush is for
line work. So we first we're going to do the flower petal. So what I would do is like what
I just said, I'm going to load the brush with some glue water. And then I'm going to load the yellow
and then blend in my dish. This is the yellow. You can also load this process with some
sakura white. That would also control the moisture control. So then I'm going to dip this in the
dark red. So I have chip color, dark red, rouge, indigo with yellow for green, yellow,
vermilion, and indigo, and ink, bath bottle ink. So then I'm rinsing my tip off.
Load a little yellow tip with a little glue.
So
and then I'm going to use a little rouge and touch little indigo for the center of the flower.
Make this a little bit deeper.
So this brush is really good as far as the double happiness because it has a very sharp tip. So I
can use it for the line work. So now I finished the flower. So then for the leaves, I'm going to
use my full lotus. So I'm going to load the yellow first, loading the glue water, and then
load the yellow and some green. So I think I'm going to do that. Okay. So still going back on
large double happiness with some yellow tip with a little green, a little rouge. Okay. So now I'm
going to do the stem to connect the bottom. So I'm loading the full lotus. This brush is fuller than
the large double happiness. So I'm loading yellow and then green, and then the indigo.
The second leaves coming from this side to connect a little ink, then the yellow green
with the tip, a little bit rouge. All right. And then I'm going to do this brush with some ink.
So then I'm connecting the flower with this. This time I'm going to use my large double happiness
with rouge and a little indigo, and then connect the flower with the whole thing.
And then we are going to do some center of the flower. So the center of the flower,
we're going to use some bleed proof white on here, and then load it with some
vermilion. And then we're going to use some, a little yellow,
and then yellow, red, vermilion, and bleed proof white. So we're going to have some
center of the flower connected with this. And then over here, also have some
yellow, bleed proof white. And then the middle is the dark red. So it's what we did the rouge
with indigo. In this one, we're going to use bleed proof white with a little green
to connect it with the center. Okay. Then we finish our amaryllis on pre-mounted large paper.
