The hair of this model is done with ebony pencil and lighter fluid. The way I do it
is a special way. You can see those scratches of the hair. I take the back of the ebony pencil
and I curve it or straight line, draw on a handmade paper. Now the opposite direction
of the scratches that I made. I will go with ebony pencil and there are two ways to really
darken it. It's pretty dark but I want it even darker and have the liquid or this blender to
push the ebony's graphite into the paper itself, the structure of the paper. Now
you can see how dark it got. You can use vine charcoal the same way but it's not as accurate
for the scratches are not going to turn out perfectly white like the you can see it on
the right side of the paper. So let's take the lighter fluid now with a stiff brush
and push that material into the paper itself. Now I guarantee it's not going to go through the paper
because of the lighter fluid evaporates so quickly it will not have a chance to go through.
I use a 27 or 23 inch handmade paper from BFK Reeves or Arches paper. All of the handmade
papers you hold the paper against the light you should see France, Arches. There are only
two countries that make handmade papers Italy and France. Now I use Prismacolor mainly for my
drawings because Prismacolor is made with a waxy paraffin material and is designed to melt away
with my lighter fluid. You can almost make it look like a watercolor and nobody will know how you did
it. There it is look how dark Prismacolor gets on handmade paper. It will not be the same on
bond the cheap el cheapo paper that most people use. It has to be handmade paper
so it sucks that material and the color into its fibers. I will show you a little bit more about
Prismacolor in a second but right now focus on ebony how dark it is. Now we take the Prismacolor
that waxy material and we now draw on top of the darkest dark. Obviously the side of the
white paper that is underneath the Prismacolor will be brighter where the Prismacolor goes over
the dark ebony then it will be darker. It's almost like chiaroscuro the emergence of light from
darkness. Now you can see the power of Prismacolor it's almost like painting doesn't it?
Yeah okay now the shadow go ahead and put your ebony pencil in and then we'll use the ebony to
darken the shadow and that would soften the edges of the shadow. Now I'm going to use a kind of a
purplish color for the shadow with Prismacolor on top of it. It really works beautifully.
The power of dark against white paper is really beautiful. This style of drawing has been done
by Durer you can see in Germany in very similar manners. Here's one of my drawings the Arizona
University Art Department you can see all the darks are done with ebony and all of the shadows
are done with ebony and lighter fluid. Here's a Prismacolor drawing of mine and the beauty is
look at it a massive amount of pencils and lighter fluid and it has never gone through.
The reason is lighter fluid evaporates very quickly.
Don't use turpentine or turpenoid it goes right through the paper and stains your handmade paper.
My last gift to you will be to stress the lines as the body goes in. You can see that the curvature
and goes into the stomach area is darkened. Also each drawing should have multiple textures,
softness, the tools that I just talked about. I hope you enjoyed this video. Don't forget to

Thank you so much.
