A heartwarming story about the adoption of two bonded rescue kittens, Figgy and Dante. Despite being diagnosed with feline dwarfism and other skeletal issues that limit her growth and mobility, Figgy lives a joyful, active life supported by her owners' love and home modifications. Her resilience serves as a reminder to appreciate the present and embrace the beauty of imperfection.
You can do it. Come on then. Come on, you can do it. Good girl.
When the shelter warned us that this tiny kitten might never grow up,
they probably expected us to change our minds.
Instead, we smiled and said, that's okay, we'd still love to meet her.
My partner and I had talked for years about adopting instead of buying a pet.
We always believed that if you have room in your home,
there are animals out there simply waiting for someone to give them a chance.
That's how we found Cats Protection here in the UK.
Among all the cats looking for homes were two little strays named Figgy and Dante.
They had been rescued together from the streets and had formed an incredible bond.
The volunteers told us they slept together, cleaned each other and never wanted to be apart.
The shelter hoped they could be adopted as a pair and for us,
that wasn't a difficult decision. We wanted them both.
A few days later, the shelter called again.
They wanted to be completely honest before we brought the kittens home.
Figgy hadn't been growing like a normal kitten and they suspected she might have feline dwarfism.
They asked if we still wanted to adopt her. We didn't hesitate for a second.
We thanked them for telling us and said, of course we're still coming.
It's been a little over a year now and Figgy still looks like a kitten.
She weighs only about 1.65 kilograms, around a third of Dante's size.
New visitors always assume she's just a few months old.
She can curl up in one hand, but don't let her tiny body fool you.
She runs through the house, chasing toys, attacks invisible bugs
and lets out the sweetest little chirping sounds whenever she's excited.
I don't have anything for you.
Every day, Figgy finds something to do. She follows Dante from room to room,
investigates every corner of the house and somehow turns ordinary moments into entertainment.
Her little chirps have become part of our daily routine.
If we hear that sound from another room, we already know she's discovered something interesting.
She may be the smallest cat in the house, but she acts like she's in charge of everything.
I'm really sorry, my love. No more cheese.
Around February this year, we noticed she wasn't jumping as easily anymore.
She started hesitating before climbing onto furniture
and sometimes looked for another way up.
We took her in for x-rays, hoping it was something simple.
Instead, the vet told us Figgy has no kneecaps
and the growth plates in parts of her spine never fuse properly.
Hearing that explained so much, but it was still hard to take in.
Would you like a treat?
Yeah.
Oh, so gentle.
From that day on, we focused on helping her instead of worrying about what we couldn't change.
She now takes pain medication and medicine for arthritis.
We added little ramps and steps beside the sofa, the bed and her favourite windows.
It didn't take long before she learned exactly how to use them.
Watching her carefully climb each step like a determined little explorer always makes us smile.
Figgy is one of the most affectionate cats I've ever had.
Most cats I've known enjoy attention when they feel like it.
Figgy is different.
She doesn't usually sit on our laps, but she always wants to be nearby.
She'll lean against your leg while you're making coffee or curl up beside you on the couch.
Belly rubs are her favourite thing in the world
and every morning she proudly announces it's breakfast time
with loud little meows echoing down the hallway.
We know cats with Figgy's condition often don't live as long as other cats
and that's something we can't ignore, but Figgy doesn't seem to think about any of that.
Every morning she wakes up excited for breakfast,
follows Dante from room to room, climbs every little ramp we built for her,
asks for belly rubs, chases her favourite toys
and eventually stretches out wherever the sunshine happens to be.
She lives the same way every single day, happy, curious and completely in the moment.
Watching her reminds us to appreciate the little things
and enjoy the time we have instead of worrying about what we can't change.
Looking back, adopting Figgy and Dante was one of the best decisions we've ever made.
Some people hesitate when an animal has medical needs or looks a little different
but those differences often become exactly what makes them so special.
Today, Figgy is still our little forever kitten,
still chirping through the house and still filling every room with joy.
As long as she's with us, we'll keep making life easier for her
and loving her exactly as she is.
