Jackie, the guitarist for the band Choke Cherry, shares a tour of her stage wardrobe during the band's first North American headline tour. She discusses her evolution from a masculine personal style to embracing a more feminine, \"secret fashionista\" persona on stage, blending gothic influences with lace, custom slips, and DIY modifications.
I love things that like fit and flair, have like a little bit of a fun silhouette to them.
Big like chunky statement jewelry, anything that just like catches the light.
Hi, I'm Jackie. I play guitar with Choke Cherry. We are on our first ever Headline Tour. We're
going all across North America. It's been so fun so far. Welcome to my closet. This is what I wear
on stage. I guess we'll start over here with probably my favorite piece so far. I didn't
start the tour with this piece when we got to New York. Our lovely friend, By Liv Handmade,
she picked this piece out for me and it is absolutely one of my new favorite pieces. I
would never choose this color for myself. Usually I'm kind of very goth and I like darker colors,
but this is a bias cut slip and we're not going to talk about how expensive it was, but
this informs a lot of my choices now. Yeah, I love getting to play with Choke Cherry.
I kind of started as like a session touring person with them and it's really opened up a
whole world of fashion to me. I really, really love it. I'm typically like a much more kind of
like masculine leaning person. I like to just, you know, wear like a chic little t-shirt and jeans,
but I love getting to like express my more feminine side with this band, so it's really,
really fun. Yeah, speaking of femininity, we have even more lace and light colors and this is like
one of my favorite kind of cover ups that I like to wear pre-show because I like to watch the bands
before we play. So I just kind of pop this bad boy on and then, you know, no one can see me,
and then when I play I take it off. So, but yeah, I love, I love like long lines,
even though I do kind of lean more mask in my personal style. I'm like a secret fashionista, so
I love to, I love long lines. I love like really hugging silhouettes, like to, you know, show off
the goods and show, you know, show what my mama gave me. So it's a fun piece here. Let's see,
oh yeah, I can't talk about my closet and not talk about this piece. This is a slip that you
recognize the graphics on. This is a custom choke cherry slip that have been on sale at our merch
booth. They've been selling like hot cakes. I'm absolutely obsessed with this line.
I chose this piece out of the, I don't know, 30 pieces or so that the band got.
This is where you really see the goth influence for me. I love darker colors. The plum on black
is like, oh, it's like my dream color cop-out. But yeah, so every member of the band has a custom
slip and we all kind of like match and color coordinate sometimes and it's, it's really,
really fun. But yeah, that's still leaning a little more femme. Let's see, I love, so I love
getting pieces kind of like chosen for me and curated for me because a lot of times I'm like,
I just get so tunnel vision and I have no idea like what to wear. And I, so those are pieces
that were more chosen for me. But then sometimes I get a piece and I just like, I love it so much,
but it just like doesn't work or like I can't let it go. My closet is a mess right now. But this is
a piece that I've had for like ever. And it originally came without the straps. And every
time I put it on, I was like, I hate this piece. I never want to wear it ever, ever in my life.
And then right before this tour, I just added some straps. And now it's like one of my favorite
pieces. I wore it last night. I wish I could wear it again today, but I try not to outfit repeat too
much. But this is absolutely one of my favorite pieces. I love lace. I love cutouts. You're going
to see a lot more cutouts in my, in my wardrobe in just a second. But yeah, I love things that
like fit and flare, have like a little bit of a fun silhouette to them. And green is my favorite
color. So I absolutely love this piece. And typically I pair it with like a longer skirt,
like the one I'm wearing. But sometimes every once in a while when you want to get fancy,
you just put on a little bloomers and, you know, show off some skin. You know, it's fun. It's fun.
We have fun. Yeah. So this is a piece that I modified. And this is another piece that I modified.
Again, sometimes I just like have clothes and I'm like, I love them. And I love like a, an aspect of
them, but they just don't quite work. So I like to get creative. I don't owe a sewing machine.
So everything, if I do sew, I sew by hand. And if I don't have a sewing machine, I just grab a pair
of scissors and I just cut ---- up. So this was actually a dress, but I didn't like the way that
the mini skirt fit on me. So I just took a pair of scissors right before tour and I just cut it up
the middle, put a little emblem there so it wouldn't split. And then I have this, it's like a
cute little like flyaway top. And it's so flowy. It's so fun on stage. You just kind of like whip
it around and like looks different in photos. Anyway. Yeah. I absolutely love it. So yeah.
If you ever don't like your clothes, just modify them. You'll, you'll be surprised. Yeah. Okay.
Now we're getting to the more, more Gothic influences. This is a lovely piece that I have.
It's really hard to play guitar in because it's got these massive sleeves. This is very,
very Stevie Nicks. And it works when you're just kind of like by yourself on stage, but when you're
playing guitar, it's a little bit harder to wear. So don't bust this out too often. But I actually
wore it last time we were in Chicago when we were opening up for Destroy Boys last year, which was
so fun. And now we're on our headline tour. Look at us. Yeah. So that's one of my favorite pieces.
Don't wear it too often. It's hard to play guitar. And yeah, this is another consideration
you have to make in your wardrobe every night. It's like, Oh, this piece is so cute, but there's
no way I can play guitar and hit all the notes on stage. So, okay. So once we're all done assembling
an outfit, we have to do our makeup. I'm very bare bones with my makeup, but I'm a Leo Venus
and all my astrology girls are going to know what I mean by that. So my absolute bare essentials are
do my lashes. I keep those on. And then, uh, I just use liquid highlighter and I put it all over
my face because when the stage lights hit it, it's just going to shine and it's going to be fun. And
it's, it's an experiment every day. I put it somewhere new on my face and we never know.
Um, deodorant, absolute must, uh, especially when you're in, uh, venues where you aren't that far
from the audience and you're flinging your arms up and down, you're, you're, you're going to want
to wear deodorant, uh, lip blur. This is what I wear every single night. It's just a matte lip
on with a little bit of color, uh, so that my hair doesn't stick in my lips when I play
not too much of like a nail polish girly, but I just do a little bit of like a shiny top coat
and it's all chipped because I'm just, you know, hitting my guitar. Um, absolute must. In addition
to the deodorant, this is my absolute favorite fragrance. It's a single scent rose fry from
Demeter fragrance library. And I also got this from Violet handmade in New York. Um, accessories.
I love to thrift. All of these pieces are thrifted big, like chunky statement jewelry,
anything that just like catches the light and just like really feels like regal and elegant,
uh, makes me feel amazing on stage. I like absolutely love it. Um, I get so many compliments
whenever I wear this piece specifically, it just makes me feel like a queen. Um, and then
the most essential part is that when the show's all done and I get off stage, I just immediately
change out of the, uh, only shoes that I brought on tour because a lot of times I play barefoot.
Uh, then I just changed into my slides and I put on a cardigan and we're ready to go.
So yeah, that's my wardrobe.
