America isn't running out of water everywhere—but beneath some of its most important agricultural regions, a massive water problem is developing.

In this video, DiscoverTube investigates the hidden water crisis unfolding beneath the Great Plains, across the Colorado River Basin, and under California’s Central Valley. The Ogallala Aquifer stretches beneath eight states and covers roughly 175,000 square miles, yet in heavily pumped regions groundwater is being removed faster than nature can replace it.

We examine the controversial “35 years left” warning and what the science actually says. Research modeling western Kansas projected roughly 69% groundwater depletion by 2060 if historical pumping trends continued—but that doesn't mean America suddenly runs out of water in 2060.

The problem extends far beyond the Ogallala. Colorado River system storage fell to roughly 36% of capacity in 2026, while the river supports more than 40 million people. Meanwhile, groundwater extraction in California has contributed to nearly 30 feet of historical land subsidence in parts of the San Joaquin Valley.
