Struggling with inconsistent iron shots, thin strikes, fat shots or poor contact? In this video, I show you the simplest way to strike your irons more consistently by understanding one of the most important fundamentals in the golf swing — low point control.
Rather than making your swing complicated, we're going to focus on a few simple changes that can immediately improve your ball striking, followed by some longer-term solutions to help you build a more consistent golf swing. You'll learn how to move your low point forward, control the clubface, improve your rotation and swing direction, and use a simple 9-to-3 drill to develop better contact. I'll also show you how to structure your practice so you can take these changes from a simple drill into your full golf swing.
In this video you'll learn: ✅ Where the low point should be when hitting iron shots ✅ Why moving forward is essential for better ball striking ✅ Quick wins to improve your iron contact ✅ How arm rotation helps keep the clubface square ✅ The importance of a centred turn followed by lateral movement ✅ Why you need to be careful with your swing direction ✅ Long-term solutions for consistent iron striking ✅ The 9-to-3 swing drill for better ball striking ✅ How to structure your practice effectively ✅ How to transfer your practice into full swingsSwing coach app ⬇️

This video provides a comprehensive guide to improving iron shots by focusing on the \"low point\" of the swing. The instructor explains how to ensure the club lands after the ball to achieve a descending strike, offering both immediate \"cheats\" for instant results and a structured long-term practice routine to build consistent ball striking.
This has got to be the simplest way to strike your irons.
What I'm going to give you in this video is a few quick wins, instant results that can help
change your fortunes with your iron shots immediately and also the long-term solutions.
When we're looking at becoming a consistent ball striker with your irons, the key is really to get
this golf club to land in the correct spot every single time in the correct direction.
So the low point of your golf swing ideally should be somewhere around about your armpit,
so just after where the golf ball is if it's in the center of your stance.
Now with a mid-iron like a 7-8-9 iron, we'd want the ball position to be in the center.
So we want the golf club to be landing just after the golf ball and hitting this
lower spot in the armpit type area, obviously descending as it's approaching the golf ball.
That's kind of a secret.
From a direction point of view, it wants to be on like a circular path,
slightly in to square to in to hit a straight shot or in to out to hit that little draw shot.
Either of those for me is fine or even slightly out to in for a tiny fade,
but generally that goes for the more powerful golfers for me because we want to maximize our
distance so hitting the draw shot will go a little further, so bear that in mind.
So on the floor here I've got basically a white rod here to represent the ball position and we're
going to set up the golf ball here or alongside the golf ball here and the idea is to try and
to really feel like it's always going to brush that ground after the golf ball.
Now in order to achieve that, we need our arms to be moving forward,
our body to be moving forward laterally at impact.
Now in terms of the quick wins, what I want to do is cheat a few things.
So for the guys who struggle to do that, what I want you to do is when you take your
set up to a golf ball, I want you to push your pelvis two or three inches towards target.
So you basically belt buckle goes just forward of this white line on the ground.
I want you to feel there's a bit more pressure on your knee foot about 55 to 60 percent depending
on how much we need to cheat these things. I also want to feel like the shaft goes forward
to about mid thigh. The last thing we can do if we need to just move that ball position back
about half a ball. Now all these things are going to encourage us to hit down the golf ball more
shift that low point more forward. Moving the pelvis more forward helps get that lateral move
preset. Putting the pressure there helps us hit down the golf ball. Putting the handle forward
gets us a little bit more shaft lean and also de-lofts that club at impact. Now when we put
the handle forward, we also need to make sure we rotate the arms and club and shaft to make
sure the clubface stays square, otherwise we might present an open clubface which we don't want.
So bobbing would normally be center, shuffle forward half a ball, move the pelvis forward
so we're ahead of this white line, pressure on this knee foot about 60 percent, handle forward to
the mid thigh, head still kind of on top of the middle of the ball here. Now from there we're
going to feel like we make a back swing where we try and turn but stay very centered and then feel
like we move forward to the target as much as we possibly can. Okay so center turn and move forward
and a real crushing low driven iron shot there, great strike. Now the only negative in this is
possibly the swinging direction. When we load everything here it can restrict how much we rotate
and shift our mass. Now in doing so that can make the swing path and plane a little bit more
over and cutting across the golf ball. So one of the things to be wary of this when we set up this
way is possibly just to feel that when we swing back keep this lead arm very connected to the body
and that should compensate then for the slight opportunities of the club getting a little bit
less organized in the back swing going up. We want that connection. So if we go through the same kind
of setup again and then we feel the left arm stays connected and we try and make the same shot
and now hopefully balance out the things we're doing to make us steeper and more forward
when things we're doing make us shallower but still get that consistent contact. Again that
is the quick wins to become a consistent iron player. Shifting that low point forward, getting
a strike, hitting that descending angle and getting that ball to go forward with a nice
interaction with the ground. Now from a long-term perspective we want to try and be able to achieve
those kind of things at impact without having to cheat them at address. So from a set point of view
if I go back to a center ball position here now, pressure to be fairly even and the handle to be
just forward with kind of opposite main side left thigh, that's the kind of standard setup.
Now again what I'm looking to achieve on the downswing is the lateral movement of the hip,
the lead knee and hip moving to the outer part of my lead foot. I'm doing that ahead of my torso
and then get my arms to go forward. That is what I'm looking to do. That is the kind of conceptual
ideas. Now what I want to do in order to achieve that is build up. I want to build up from a nine
to three swing to a full swing. This would be how I would get you to practice. So we set up in that
very same way and then we're going to try and take left arm to nine o'clock and right arm to three
o'clock. As we go to three o'clock we're going to try and feel that we finish with our tailbone,
our backside past this white line and we try and arch our body back so we get the kind of feeling
of this leading, this pelvis tuck and this body staying back in the nine to three position. We're
to get that kind of clubface control and that kind of correct wrist action through the golf ball.
So set up as normal nine to three and ideally we want to try and live there maybe for a little bit
until we feel very comfortable with that and we get very consistent shots. Once we do that then we
want to try and add a little bit more pivot and let the arms carry on a bit more and we're going
three stages so we've got the nine to three then if we like let's go nine to kind of one o'clock
and then nine to full finish. So let's go ahead and do a nine to one o'clock. So same setup every
single time. That would be the best one I've hit so far. Absolutely felt huge control on that,
great contact, beautiful shot. So in an ideal world we might live there for like 10 minutes
and do like 10 shots in each of these stages and then finish with a full shot. So the full
shot the focus will very much be trying to do a full backswing and then trying to feel the full
finish but trying to feel we're trying to use the stuff on the ground the white stick on the ground
in particular to try and feel like a shift past and that was great. Great contact, great pressure
on the golf ball, really enjoyed that. So the simplest way to be a great iron player is to
control where the club lands and make sure we don't disrupt the direction the club's traveling in
in that journey so we can still then basically hit great shots. So I have a few cheats in there
at the start for the people who can't shift correctly in the golf swing they can do that
and I would recommend you do that probably with all your mid to short irons kind of let's say
five iron to wedge. Longer irons I'd set up a bit more normal because we need to get a loft on the
club get that elevation on drivers and woods the same. The guys who don't need the cheats
look at the conceptual idea of what we've talked about try to feel like we are rotating and being
centered moving laterally moving that club getting our wrist in a bit more flexion and
trying to build it up through that nine to three to nine to one to nine to four finish and then
full shots. That would be the sequence in which I'd go if we can just spend 10 minutes in each of the
zones that will help you ball striking and a great way to start any single practice session.
