Brett shares a curated list of 10 essential browser extensions compatible with Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi) and Firefox. These tools are designed to enhance user experience, improve privacy, assist in digital design, and provide utility for shopping and research.
Hey folks, Brett here.
Over the years, we've done several videos showing you the best browser extensions
from the Chrome Web Store.
Per a viewer request in this top 10, I've compiled our 10 absolute favorites we've
shown in the past that we think are the most useful to enhance the functionality of your
browser.
In addition to Google Chrome, all of these can be used with any Chromium-based browser
like Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Brave, and the many others.
In addition, all mentioned are also available as add-ons for the Firefox browser and other
browsers based on Firefox.
Let's dive in.
This will be a quick one.
Dark Reader is one I've mentioned a few times over the years when we were just doing
videos for extensions available from the Chrome Web Store.
Now that we're including add-ons for Firefox, it's available for that browser as well,
including an extension for the Firefox Android app.
This extension is awesome and one of my favorites.
It basically creates a dark mode for any website.
When installed, it's turned on by default.
I'll show you a quick example here.
It's great for sites with a lot of white space to make them easier to look at and read.
If turned off, to turn it on, click on the dark reader icon to the right of the address
bar and select on.
There's other settings here you can play around with.
And because this extension is completely free, there's a donate button here at the bottom
if you'd like to support the developer.
Wikipedia, which has been around now for 25 years, has never had a great looking interface
and can sometimes make it difficult to find the information you're looking for.
The award-winning extension, WikiWand, optimizes Wikipedia's content to give you an improved
reading experience and it's designed better as well.
It now has AI included because everything does.
I ignore that.
When you go to any Wikipedia page with the WikiWand extension installed, it automatically
shows you the WikiWand layout with a much cleaner look.
When you go to settings here in the upper right, there are settings to make it your
own and even includes a setting to switch it to dark mode.
The makers of the DuckDuckGo search engine have a privacy extension they call DuckDuckGo
Search and Tracker Protection.
It changes your default search engine to DuckDuckGo and blocks trackers and cookies to help stop
companies from collecting your data.
Once installed, there's nothing more you need to do.
Protections are turned on by default.
Used in conjunction with uBlock Origin mentioned earlier, this does help to improve your privacy
online.
ColorZilla is a must-have for doing digital design work.
This advanced eyedropper will get you a color reading from any point on any webpage in your
browser.
It's similar to Photoshop's advanced color picker.
When you're on a webpage and you see a color that you want to use in your project, just
select the ColorZilla icon here to the right of the address bar.
Then select Page Color Picker Active.
Your cursor will now change to a plus.
Hover it over any color that you want to use and left click.
Now that color will be saved to your clipboard where you can paste it into another program.
Awesome Screen Recorder and Screenshot is a great extension for Chrome which lacks a
proper screenshot tool.
This extension also lets you record both the audio and video within your browser.
While Firefox does have a good screenshot tool built into it, it does struggle on some
sites with full page screen captures.
On the Firefox add-ons page for the extension, the name is slightly different but it is the
same extension.
To use it and take a screenshot, click on its icon to the right of the address bar.
With the Capture tab selected, your choices are Visible Part.
This will only capture what is on your screen.
Full Page captures the entire webpage from top to bottom.
And Selected Area is where you can left click and drag an area of your screen for the capture.
For recordings, the Record tab gives you four choices that are self-explanatory.
Desktop, Camera Only, This Tab, and Custom which is similar to Selected Area in Capture.
Awesome Screen Recorder and Screenshot is a freemium extension.
For free, it lets you take up to 100 screenshots and up to 20 recordings per month which should
be enough for most people.
If you want unlimited screenshots and recordings, that plan is $6 per month.
Wet Font is great for those times you need to identify the fonts being used on a webpage.
There are developer tools for doing this, but using this extension makes it a lot easier
and quicker to do so.
When you're on a webpage and you're curious the font they're using, click the Wet Font
icon to the right of the address bar, then hover your cursor over any text.
It says this one here is a Polysans font.
Clicking on the text will give you additional details, including the style, weight, color,
size, and line height.
Keepa is a must-have extension for those of you that shop on Amazon to ensure that you're
getting a good deal.
Mentioned recently in another video on this channel discussing extensions from the Chrome
Web Store, it's also available as a Firefox add-on.
When you're on the product page on Amazon, scroll down.
This will show you a price history chart for that product.
The default range is three months.
I'll change it to all 460 days.
It looks like at its lowest, it was around $150, and the current price right now looks
like it's closer to $900.
Over here in the tabs to the right of Price History, selecting Track Product lets you
set up price alerts to notify you when the price drops below your desired price.
The Wayback Machine extension from the folks at the non-profit Internet Archive is useful
to show you what a website looked like in the past, even if that site no longer exists.
Let's use the once-powerful yahoo.com as an example.
Select the Wayback Machine icon to the right of the address bar.
You can go with the oldest, newest, or select a date.
I'll select a date.
For this site, it only goes back to 2018, so I'll select that.
Scroll down here a little bit.
Let's go with April 23rd.
There's four snapshots for that day.
On some of the snapshots, you'll find that some of the images might be missing,
but it does give you a good idea of what that site used to look like.
uBlock Origin, a popular extension with more than 15 million users to block ads,
trackers, and crypto miners early last year was deactivated because it was
no longer supported in Chrome due to the changes made when they introduced Manifest v3.
Great news!
If you use Firefox, it's still available to use on their desktop browser with all the features.
And don't tell anyone, it's also available to use in their mobile browser for Android as well.
That will be our little secret.
It's not all bad news for Chrome or Chromium-based browsers.
The same developer of uBlock Origin created a new extension
that complies with Chrome's Manifest v3 called uBlock Origin Lite.
While not as good as the original extension, it does a decent job.
When using uBlock Origin in Firefox with the extension enabled,
clicking on it will show you how many were blocked on the page you're on.
If you find that a site's not loading properly,
or you decide that a particular website is worth supporting to show ads,
clicking on the power button disables the extension for that site.
You would just have to reload the page.
When using the uBlock Origin Lite Chrome extension,
when you click on its icon, you'll see that it has four filtering modes.
From left to right, the first one is No Filtering, Basic, Optimal, and Complete.
I have found that using Complete breaks some websites, so I keep it on Optimal.
Voxel Rebound is useful for those times you need to take a break.
With more than 1 million players,
this classic jumping game now has more than 50 levels, with more being added periodically.
To launch it, click its icon to the right of the add-ons bar.
You have the option to turn the audio on or off, go full screen,
otherwise you'll be playing in this tiny window,
and you can also enable a more intense fast mode.
That clicking on your mouse makes the box jump.
It's more difficult than it sounds.
I'll turn the audio on here and show you an example.
Thanks for watching. Links are in the description.
