I'm here at NTD's Traditional Martial Arts Competition where they just announced the
winners. No gold awards this year. The judges though explained why.
Today's awards serve a dual purpose, not only to ensure that those deserving of encouragement
receive it, but also to help some of you let go of attachment, to realize that the award itself
is not the most important thing. That is why we have no gold award this time.
In traditional martial arts, letting go of attachments is part of improving. Nonetheless,
competitors like Qingyao Lin were still happy to come away with the bronze award
in the male unarmed category. I'm happy that I won an award. I'm also very thankful
to this competition, to the event. I met a lot of people and then everyone's here
contributing to this culture. I just love it very much. I think winning an award or not is
probably not the most important thing. It's being here and seeing everyone practicing martial arts
and loving this culture and I just really enjoy the atmosphere over here.
David Wong, who won the silver award in the male weapons category,
says he plans on returning to NTD's next competition.
I really enjoyed my time here. I think that the first two days during the competition,
I was a bit more nervous, but the third day I really enjoyed my time here and especially
during the performance. I wanted to see how much I improved. I also did want to see other people and
how they improved or new people coming in to see their martial arts. I think that there's
a lot of things we could learn from just watching other people and just observing.
The event also included a junior category. 11-year-old Diana Wang, who's been practicing
for more than two years now, says she really enjoyed the competition.
I really enjoyed it. I mean, I like going on stage, but I really like the martial arts
competition. It gives you more chances to learn and become a better person.
NTD's ninth international traditional Chinese martial arts competition
has now come to a close.
NTD's next traditional martial arts competition won't be until 2028, but coming up next month
is NTD's piano competition taking place in New York. I'm Dave Martin for NTD News.
