☉ WELCOME TO FRESH START STICKS ☀︎ We’re a family of five who left the UK to start a new life in rural Bulgaria. After the events of 2020, life in the UK changed dramatically. Attitudes shifted, businesses struggled under constant regulation changes, and with three young children, we began questioning whether the traditional path still offered the future we wanted for them.
We didn’t feel that the school system could provide the structure, freedom, and real-life skills our children need as they grow into young adults — so we chose to homeschool.
After researching several European countries, we chose Bulgaria. It’s still organic, the people are welcoming, and the nature is truly beautiful. After months of searching — and almost giving up — we finally found an old farmhouse in the countryside that had been empty for over a year. We decided to buy it and renovate it, learning as we go.
OUR GOAL IS SIMPLE: Renovate our Bulgarian farmhouse More freedom. More family time. Growing our own food. And travelling together as a family in the Balkan countries

This is our new venture.
There's a new venture coming up which is going to be bigger, better and just more interesting.
How many people get an opportunity like this?
You know what, it's got everything we wanted.
We've moved abroad.
We have chosen this lifestyle, one which allows us to be flexible.
We can travel anywhere in the world.
So of course with the current climate, things are changing rapidly.
We're not entirely sure that we're still going to be able to travel as freely as we'd like to.
However, we do need to find a base.
We don't really know where this is going to go.
Quite honestly, nothing's set in stone.
We are now here in Turkey and we've been given an opportunity
to do something that many people don't have the opportunity to do.
The sea is behind us and it is glorious.
So is this going to work?
I don't know.
Come, let's have a look.
Yes, exactly.
You need somewhere to have your bed and my piano and everything else we need to have.
And that base we're thinking at the moment might just be Turkey.
We're not saying 100% because obviously nothing's set in stone.
But we will 100% do business here.
Yeah.
That's a fact.
That was called, so this is called Moonlight Beach.
You can see from the sign there.
So nothing is open yet.
We're just, literally just found, discovered this beach.
And it is stunning around here.
I can imagine when it is season, it must get very, very busy.
So at the moment, a lot of people are just rebuilding,
maintaining and taking stuff out and cleaning, really.
No barbecues, really?
On this beach, because I think it's a small place, right?
Yeah.
Out of all the countries, whether it's Africa, Asia, Turkey just ticks every single box.
All right, finally got inside.
Wanna come have a look?
Yeah.
This is our new project.
So we are right by the coast, guys.
I have to tell you something, though.
There's a leak.
There's a few.
There's one there and one there.
Like we're coming from the sea, obviously, but I'm not sure where.
So we have looked at various places like Thailand, like the Philippines, like Vietnam.
And there are pros with these countries.
So for example, Thailand is all this, sun.
Yeah.
However, it's a lot of tourism.
I mean, we've been in Turkey for a little while now and we've not really been to many
touristic places.
No.
We're not really about the touristic places.
We're about the natural, the people.
This is Alex.
Alex, the proper salesman.
Wow, 80.
And obviously the sea is going to be part of that.
And where the sea is, there's going to be tourists.
But we don't particularly go to be around tourist areas.
No.
It bores me to be quite frankly.
Definitely.
Are you ready for this, Chris?
Are you ready for this new challenge?
Yeah, sure.
Just let us show you around this place.
It is a unit which is right by the coast.
So yes, we noticed that.
But that's an easy fix, isn't it?
Yeah.
I think it's coming from up there somewhere from the top.
We had some hard rain last night.
You've got the kitchen area over there.
Moves the stuff out of the way.
Needs to go in the bin a lot of it.
So we've got an extractor fan, washer, ice maker, fridge and various areas where a sink
and all these things will go.
There's even a coffee machine here, which is good.
Oh, isn't it?
Yeah.
Nice coffee machine.
You know where I'm going to be all the time.
No, you're going to have this one.
Small one, look.
As you can see, I'm a lot different to a person that I was in Bulgaria.
It's not just about this amazing sea behind or the amazing summer weather we've got already
in spring and the fact that you can buy and attain stuff which is a good quality for a
reasonable price.
It's the whole package of the people.
Yeah.
The people is important for me.
You know, someone said to me, a lot of us don't even know the place we're moving to
and going on a holiday for two weeks or seven days is not enough to think,
I'm actually going to live in Marmaris.
I'm going to live in Mexico.
You need to go there and spend time there and actually get to know it.
Exactly.
You saying that, we've never thought about holiday in Turkey.
Yes, that's the thing.
That's the difference.
If we came as a holiday, it would have been different.
Yeah.
Because when you go on holiday, you also think, oh, you know, I've done all day, but I like
it, but we've not seen the real side of it and it spoils it.
It's like going on a blind date and then the veil comes and it's like, oh my God.
But when it's a blind date, it's all good.
But when you actually meet that person and start dating that person, then it's going
to be a completely different relationship.
And you've already pre-made your mind up based on 15 minutes of those 10 minute time
things that you do.
I don't know what it is.
I've never done it, by the way.
What's that little gaping hole over there?
Oh, that's where the electrics will be.
There's an electric fuse box there.
At the moment, electricity is not turned on.
It's quite easy to get turned on, though.
And you've got this amazing...
What was that thing turning us off?
I thought we had mice there.
No.
And then you've got this lamp.
It's like a, I don't know.
I thought you put a light in there and it reflects out different colours.
Oh, we've got police.
Oh, we've got the police.
They're here already.
Let's see.
The dogs look like them.
Oh, well.
A lot of people have done it.
They've gone and bought the car and after a month, they're like, I don't really like this.
But they loved it up to that point.
Yeah.
So don't be like us.
We've travelled.
We're open-minded people.
We're entrepreneurs.
So we're prepared to take risks.
Calculated risks as well.
Bulgaria wasn't that calculated.
It was like, it'll do.
Let's go.
That's what it was.
This is more calculated.
So this, you're seeing the real us sitting down, arguing and all that kind of stuff.
My God, this is crazy.
About whether we should or not.
Then also looking around, doing our research, doing our due diligence
on the people, the place, the taxes, everything.
We've got the whole thing wrapped up in our mind and think, right,
we're going to move forward this place.
Don't just think, well, I went all day.
I had a really good two weeks or seven days a year.
And you're going to think that's where you're going to live.
It may not be for you because the culture changes when you start getting involved with people.
We've got a new security guard.
The police, yeah, but the police.
The police just rocked up to the unit.
Not sure why.
I think they just come and circulate the area.
And the dog that you guys just saw that was laying here literally just like barked them away.
And that dog is a resident in Saria.
So apparently he just doesn't like chickens.
He don't like cats.
He don't like anyone.
He's making sure the police is gone.
He's came back.
We've got a guard dog.
Oh, brilliant.
Oh, look.
He's a cute dog.
So Elaine, I think there's some things that need to be thrown away.
Throwing that away?
Well, no, I was just about to say it does look a bit antique-y, doesn't it?
And this table's in perfect condition.
We have fridges.
Nice fridges as well, look.
These are proper nice and they're quite new.
There's another one there with the brand on there.
I don't drink.
Wow.
Bit of trash.
I'm only joking.
It's a bit antique.
There's lots of antiques in Turkey.
I've noticed that though.
These chairs are not new.
They look new, but you can see they're very old chairs.
And they're properly made because they've been joined.
So these are not like the imitation stuff you buy in these shops these days.
Look at our view, guys.
I know.
It could be anywhere in the world.
It's like being in the Himalayas, look.
You can make it your mind where you want to be every day when you come to work.
You feel like a bit of Thailand.
Yeah.
Right now, we're going to enjoy this beautiful sea behind us.
We're going to look at our building, which is next to us,
and see what on earth we're going to do with it.
It might just be a lookout spot.
We come here and we sit down.
We invite some of you guys to come and sit with us
and enjoy the sea with some Turkish chai.
And if not, we don't find a house very soon,
we'll live in it and put a bed and a mattress and all that in there.
And then we'll have amazing sea views right on the major point.
Better get back to business because we've got to sit down
and see where Salik's coming from, see what we're doing with this building.
Learn about some stuff.
See what we're going to keep and not.
Yeah.
And then we'll have a, yeah, just come back to you guys
and update on what we're doing next.
Yeah.
Because we're not going to stop.
We don't stop.
So is it wrong for something to feel so right?
So we left the UK and literally went on like an adventure to find a place to settle.
Kind of highlights most of the wrongs involved.
Yeah, definitely.
Yeah.
You understand what I mean?
There's no point beating around the bush because it is what it is.
I think that's the question, isn't it?
That we've asked ourselves so many times.
