Since leaving the UK and buying this house in Bulgaria we've had no time to just relax and be a family, for the last few weeks we've set a massive target to get one room ready in the house so that we can at least relax over the holiday period.
have Can we transform this room in our Bulgarian farmhouse into a lounge before Christmas, we've got so much to do.
This week was the most pressure because we are running out of time.

☉ WELCOME TO FRESH START STICKS ☀︎ We’re a family of five who left the UK to start a new life in rural Bulgaria. After the events of 2020, life in the UK changed dramatically. Attitudes shifted, businesses struggled under constant regulation changes, and with three young children, we began questioning whether the traditional path still offered the future we wanted for them.
We didn’t feel that the school system could provide the structure, freedom, and real-life skills our children need as they grow into young adults — so we chose to homeschool.
After researching several European countries, we chose Bulgaria. It’s still organic, the people are welcoming, and the nature is truly beautiful. After months of searching — and almost giving up — we finally found an old farmhouse in the countryside that had been empty for over a year. We decided to buy it and renovate it, learning as we go.
OUR GOAL IS SIMPLE: Renovate our Bulgarian farmhouse More freedom. More family time. Growing our own food. And travelling together as a family in the Balkan countries

The narrator and their partner race to prepare their Bulgarian home for Christmas within a tight deadline. The process involves a mix of interior painting, exterior landscaping to combat mud, and last-minute shopping, all supported by the help of a friendly neighbor.
We've got 24 hours to get this room ready for Christmas.
Can we pull it off?
We still need to finish painting the windows,
wash the dog,
do some last minute food shopping
and pick up a few bits for the house renovation.
And at the last minute our Bulgarian neighbour turned up to help.
The room still looks like a building site
and we've got one more day before Christmas.
We're going to do as much as we can within 24 hours
and then tidy up
to be ready for Christmas.
It's fine.
I'm putting mine to bed.
We'll get some more in at some point.
That is it guys.
So we've done our own little mini-reef.
I've had to wash Zorro because
Zorro decided to go outside and
it splashed on me.
Yep, smells clean.
Going to dry you off.
Make sure you dry.
Good boy.
Say bye-bye.
Bye-bye.
So he's a clean dog now.
You can kiss the dog.
Or maybe not kiss the dog.
He looks happy though.
Yeah, I think initially he's a bit scared
but whilst they're all...
You OK?
He's OK.
Dobre.
Got the pet scrub so he's nice and warm.
Da.
Good boy.
Finishing this off.
I've got these big stones here
and a lot of you have been saying in the comments
the plastic will retain the water
and it will not drain because it's not porous.
I've already made holes.
The plastic is old.
It has got a lot of holes in it.
Small holes.
I've doubled it over
and the rocks itself
make holes in the plastic naturally.
I'm not too concerned about that.
Thank you for your advice.
I've made a note of that
and I will obviously amend it
where I think it needs mending
based on your advice.
It's the first time I'm doing this
so I appreciate all your comments
and your support on doing this.
I'm just putting in some bits of wood.
Let me show you.
These bits of wood here
and putting them in
just to retain the wall of the dirt.
I'm going to fill between here with some dirt
just to hold it up.
And I've done the same on that side as well.
I've got good plans and big plans for this
which will lead out to where the car is.
This is just for winter.
Instead of that, I'll live with mud.
I'll live with that for the next few months.
It's not nice to walk in
and bring mud into the house every day.
This is a solution I can come up with.
The reason why I've used big stones
because normally I wouldn't.
I'd use sand and smaller stones.
This is going to be
almost like a water runaway.
The water will stay and run below the stones
and then I'm going to put dirt on the top
and the water will eventually lead out down there.
Again, it's in a slight gradient
so the water will run down
and will filter out to the garden.
It's better than sitting here
and becoming a mud bath.
That's why I've used these big stones.
When I'm finished,
I'm going to reuse these stones
somewhere else in the garden
which you'll see at some point.
I'm going to use them now.
Hello.
That's Zorro.
I've just realised
they've thrown some dirt there for me.
Oh, I didn't see that.
My Bulgarian friend over there
with a tractor just going over there.
He's just put some there.
Appreciate that.
Just come around the corner
with a little red tractor.
Our neighbour is right there.
Now I've got this,
I can tidy up the garage area.
Thank you,
my great Bulgarian neighbours.
Appreciate that so much.
That's one thing I need is a tractor.
We're expecting that to be there straight away.
I came out
and did not even see that massive pile.
It's like rocks and stones.
Anyway, brilliant.
Eva's going to put that down on the floor.
I've done a good job.
It's good to have good neighbours in Bulgaria
and Eva's one of them.
Looking good.
Get rid of the grass.
I don't want that.
Get rid of these weeds.
The grass is growing.
Don't want that.
Thank you.
Thank you much.
Morning.
Thank you.
Appreciate.
Thank you.
Yeah, thank you.
Take care.
Thank you, bye.
Eva's kindly helped us out today
to help with the driveway.
It's better than before.
I believe Elaine's inside the house
doing some painting,
I believe,
or something,
inside the lounge.
What do you think of the lounge?
Do you think you like it?
Do you like the colours?
I wasn't too sure of that
Reddy, pinky, peachy, orangy,
terracotty,
I don't know what kind of colour it is.
I wasn't too sure about that
but now it looks really nice.
I like it.
It doesn't show on the camera
as well as it does in the flesh.
I know I put some lighting on it
but it looks really great
and Elaine's done a good job.
Now she's painting the windows
and the window sills.
Another colour.
I've got this fine
hardcore.
It's very fine
so it'll look nice.
Not big stuff.
I'm going to fill all this with the hardcore
so it's nice and black.
Obviously you'll see some of the stones underneath
but it'll be hard.
I'm going to try and create a pattern.
What I wanted to do
is I've got a load of paving stones
paving stones
I'm going to place paving stones
there.
I could either do
I might just do one
down the middle
or I can do two.
Which one should I go for?
I'm going to do two.
One either side.
Gap one inside.
I can do that.
What do you think?
One.
So as you walk in
it'll be like
step one there.
No, I don't think one looks good.
I think two.
I think we'll do two
because
if I'm pushing a wheelbarrow
or something in
it's going to be better
for stability
rather than dodging.
So if I put
one there
and one there like that
what do you think?
So one there
a gap one there
one there
and one there again.
What do you think guys?
Good?
Good idea?
Right, let's do it.
Let's do two.
I'm just going to get these seated in
and then I'm going to come back to you.
We've never stopped today.
Alright.
Let me get on with it.
I've got as level as I can
tampering it down
or compacting it
the best I can.
This stone's a bit wobbly
so I'll lift it up
shove a bit of dirt in there
and put it back.
There you go.
So if you've got a mallet
a very heavy mallet like this one
you can use this.
They have got tools
but this is just something
to keep it firmly in place.
Move any stones out of the way.
I'm probably going to move this stone here.
Put some smaller stones.
Lucky enough
with the dirt I just got a minute ago
there's a lot of them in there
to firm the ground.
Then later
I can just cover it up a bit more.
For now
I'm just trying to
get them in position.
Set the other ones
in similar positions.
So right now
I've done it at
I'll show you
10 centimetres apart
13 centimetres
apart from each other.
Approximately.
I'm not going to be too fussy
on that one.
So you can get an idea
of what it's going to look like.
It's going to look quite decent I think.
I've just got to do the other stones.
Coming really well.
Yeah, it's alright actually.
Yeah.
It may never be too close.
Maybe not in the winter.
By the time I do one
and the other
I've got back to that one
and it's coming really well though.
Yeah.
There we go.
We know that
it's a very long process
to do this.
What we're doing
repainting the windows.
But
we can change it
to double glazing
but the problem is that
you lose the character
off the house.
So we really want to maintain
the old Bulgarian style.
We're just going to
try and keep it
as natural as possible
while still maintaining
the warmth.
It's actually drying
very quickly
which is good.
That's what I've done.
Ignore all the bits of plastic.
It's not finished yet
but what do you think guys?
What do you think?
Good.
Remember, I did all that.
That needs to be levelled out.
What do you think?
A bit closer.
Nice paving stones to walk on.
Up to the gate.
Right, let me go and get Elaine.
Ignore all this mess.
This is going to be tied up.
We've got ashes from the petrol car.
Wood chippings everywhere
from when I'm cutting wood.
This is where
obviously I cut a lot of wood
so I've got to clean that up.
Elaine?
Yeah?
Really got to put some WD-40
on that door.
On that door?
Have we had complaints?
Yeah.
We have.
Oh gosh, alright.
Alright.
Right, so what have you been up to
out here?
Right.
What do you think?
Oh wow.
Wow, that is brilliant.
Look at that.
Look at what it was
compared to what it is now.
Yeah, I know.
That is amazing.
I mean, before that was mud.
Yeah.
Then it became a lot of stones.
Yeah.
And now you've got that.
Wow.
Yeah.
All in one day.
Or two.
Well, three or four days.
Well, yeah.
I mean yesterday
was the day I decided
that's what I'm going to do
and I did it.
We've walked down it.
Let's see.
Wait, wait, wait.
I want to see.
Go on in, that's it.
There you go.
Oh look, she's walking
catwalk now, look.
I know.
She's done a good job.
High five.
That's one job done.
Right, that's one done.
Three million to go.
Hello.
Taxi.
Hello.
Do you remember him?
Yeah, da, da, da.
He's my friend.
Da, da, da.
Thank you.
Everyone's getting prepared
for Christmas.
We are going to go into
the normal butchers
that we go into
and grab some meat
because, yeah,
everyone's been,
not everyone closes
on the 25th today.
No, it's supposed to be
on Christmas Day
but it's holiday, it's busy.
Really?
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow, proper busy.
Thank you.
Oh, wow.
And then it's very busy today.
I've never seen so many people
in this butchers.
How are you?
Good.
England, England,
they call them trotters.
Trotters.
Pig feet trotters.
Good.
Thank you.
Bye.
That is it, guys.
We bought our meat
for Christmas.
So we're done.
If you ever want to come
and have a nice cake,
she is the person
to come to.
So guys,
if you're ever in
Ljaskovec,
this is the place.
Windows, maybe,
if anyone
doesn't know.
We didn't finish
everything in time
for Christmas.
There are still things
left undone
and that can feel heavy,
especially when you've
got kids.
But when we look back
on where this room started,
the change is massive.
We're still going.
For today,
this is enough.
Thank you all
so much for watching
and we'll see you
in the new year.
