Outer Banks Season 4 wastes no time reminding us that the Pogues are terrible at staying safe.
Just when they think they've finally made it, another treasure hunt,
and another disaster, comes calling. Here's the full recap.
A new treasure hunt. 18 months before they're officially recognized for discovering El Dorado,
John B., Sarah, J.J., Kiara, Pope, and Cleo use their gold money to buy J.J.'s land from the bank.
They rebuild the property, add a fishing stand and dock, and turn it into a business.
They even save their final nugget of gold to cover their property taxes.
But J.J. has other ideas. He bets the entire stash on himself in a dirt bike race.
J.J. goes head to head with his opponent, but Topper ultimately wins.
Now, the Pogues are in financial trouble again, with $13,000 in taxes due within 7 days.
Their city of gold discovery has turned them into local heroes.
And that newfound fame leads them to a man with a story about another legendary treasure,
Captain Blackbeard's. Yeah, another treasure hunt is officially calling.
Blackbeard's Curse.
The Pogues head to Blackstone, where they meet businessman Wes Genretti.
He tells them about a terrifying curse supposedly placed on his family by Blackbeard's wife,
Elizabeth, after Wes' ancestor killed the couple in the 18th century. For 300 years,
the curse has allegedly claimed the lives of members of the Genretti family.
Wes' son-in-law, Chandler Groff, claims there is a way to break the curse.
Recover an amulet from Blackbeard's final ship,
The Adventure.
The Pogues agree to another underwater adventure for a handsome fee.
They manage to get the ship's location from a Coast Guard source.
JJ and Kiara dive to The Adventure, where they encounter another person.
Things quickly turn deadly. JJ and Kiara eventually make it back to the surface with the amulet,
but both are rushed to the hospital with decompression sickness.
When the group visits Wes, they discover an even bigger problem.
He is dead, and Shoop is already there. One trouble after another. Their attacker
also ends up in the hospital because of his spear wound. When he and JJ lock eyes,
the Pogues know it's time to bail. They break out of the chamber and escape with the attacker's file.
His name is Leitner, and he is a ruthless mercenary for the Lupine Corsairs.
Soon after, Pope overhears Leitner and a woman discussing the cursed amulet and
something called the Blue Crown. Things get worse when Leitner abducts Cleo.
Terence tries to convince her to hand over the amulet in exchange for her life.
Pope, who is researching Blackbeard at a museum, gets the call and rushes to save her.
A fight breaks out as soon as he arrives. Terence is killed, but Leitner escapes with the amulet.
Elsewhere, Rafe is still dating Sophia, but she overhears when he tells his friends he
isn't living with a Pogue because he has standards. Hurt, she accepts real estate
agent Hollis Robinson's offer to help push Rafe into investing money in the disputed Goat Island
deal. Back on the beach, Topper and John B have a tense conversation. Then Ruthie drives over a
turtle hatch while trying to scare the Pogues, prompting Kiara to condemn the Kooks for their
lack of empathy. J.J. responds by threatening to kill them all. Back at the house, the Pogues
hide Terence's body just as Shoop arrives to question J.J. about his actions on the beach.
Then Pope delivers their next Blackbeard lead. The Half Moon Battery in Charleston.
The secret of J.J.'s birth. The Pogues go to a church looking for the map that reveals the
location of the Blue Crown. A powerful, magical artifact. Pope and Sarah enter the crypt while
John B and Cleo stand watch. Leitner and his boss, Captain Dahlia, use the amulet to enter
the crypt through a fake grave. They find the map, leaving Pope and Sarah trapped inside as the
crypt begins to flood. Meanwhile, J.J. receives a letter that leads him to find his father living
at his friend's house. He had never actually gone to South America. The cops arrive and they run.
Then Luke drops an even bigger bombshell. He isn't J.J.'s biological father. Chandler Groff is.
J.J.'s birth mother, Larissa Genretta, died by drowning, and her son was presumed dead. But
Groff gave J.J. to Luke to raise. Confused and shaken, J.J. only tells Kiara what happened.
J.J. goes to war. At Town Hall, the Pogues discover that the decision regarding their
home has already been made. Luke has betrayed them in exchange for amnesty. The property sale
is declared illegitimate, and J.J. snaps. He beats up a police officer and runs, triggering a riot.
Eventually, the police corner him. His friends urge him to surrender, but J.J. refuses. He
manages to escape, while Pope punches a police officer aiming at J.J. and gets arrested. At the
same time, Hollis and Rafe close their deal. Groff is working with Hollis on the fraud scheme,
assuring her he is the sole beneficiary of the Genretta estate. J.J. then confronts Groff,
who denies any connection to him. But when Lightner and his gang arrive to settle old
scores with Groff for stealing from them, Groff asks J.J. for help and finally admits the truth.
He is J.J.'s father. But it's too late. They are captured. Groff tells J.J. that after Larissa's
death, he didn't believe he was capable of raising him. Now, however, he wants to make amends.
Meanwhile, Kiara guesses where J.J. has gone. When she goes to call Sarah,
she notices her positive pregnancy test. Pope faces a brutal choice. Join the Marine Corps,
or go to prison. The Blue Crown map. The Pogues locate J.J. and Groff, and John B. throws a
Molotov cocktail to incite chaos and give them a chance to escape with the map. Groff then explains
it can only be read using a special lens hidden in Larissa's grave. J.J. and Groff retrieve it,
but Groff betrays him again. He locks J.J. inside the tomb and heads to Pogolandia to steal the map.
When Kiara catches him, Groff knocks her out. Pope is about to join the Marines,
but walks away at the last moment. Sarah finally tells John B. that she is pregnant,
and they try to get married, only to discover that the courthouse is closed. The Kooks then
chase the Pogues, but Pope arrives in time to rescue them. Groff returns for J.J. and the two
head to Hollis' house. Groff and Hollis argue about his lies. The John Rhett estate is to be
turned into a nature reserve, despite Groff killing his wife and Wes for his own greed.
To cover his crimes, Groff kills Hollis, plants evidence against J.J. and runs away with the
Later, at sea, J.J. confronts Groff and accuses him of killing Larissa. Groff throws J.J. overboard.
The Pogues find him. Far away, Groff hands over the scroll and lends to Dahlia to protect himself.
The race to Morocco. Groff reports Hollis missing. Police eventually find her dead and begin hunting
J.J., but Shoop isn't convinced. The Pogues decide to go to Morocco, find the Blue Crown,
and stop Groff. They try stealing a ship capable of making the journey. They fail.
Then Shoop discovers Groff's criminal record. When he goes to arrest J.J.,
Rafe arrives and joins the Pogues to recover his money from Groff. Shoop lets them go because
he wants Groff too. Aboard the ship, J.J. ties up Rafe. There's no trust between them yet.
John B. then tells J.J. that he is going to be a father and asks him to be the child's godfather.
Drunk and overwhelmed, J.J. says he doesn't think either of them is worthy. Then, a massive storm
hits. Kiara frees Rafe so he doesn't drown. Sarah falls overboard and J.J. jumps in after her.
For a moment, it looks like both have died. Then the group reunites at the shore.
John B. and Sarah finally tell everyone their baby news. The ultimate quest. The Pogues arrive
in Morocco and steal food for Sarah. The police chase them, forcing Rafe and the others to split
up. Rafe finds Groff at a hotel and saves him from being killed by Lightner. He wants his money,
but Groff tells Rafe about Sophia's betrayal. Rafe responds by throwing Groff into a well.
Elsewhere, the Pogues reach the dock and, despite shots being fired, leave for Agapenta.
On the way, they find Groff, and J.J. gives him a jug of water so he can survive,
but refuses to rescue him. As they reach their destination, they witness the Lupine Corsairs
about to kill Rafe. Sarah shoots them, triggering a manhunt. The siblings reconcile after Sarah
tells Rafe how their father died saving her. Next, John B. deciphers the map. Pope shoots
and kills Lightner. And then, despite a huge desert storm, J.J. finds the Blue Crown. J.J.'s
farewell. Just when the Pogues seem to have won, Groff returns, having climbed out of the pit.
He takes Kiara hostage, forcing J.J. to choose between her and the Blue Crown.
For J.J., it's an easy choice. He hands over the treasure. But Groff doesn't honor the deal.
He murders J.J. in cold blood for not throwing him the rope earlier.
In his final moments, J.J. declares his love for Kiara. Groff flees with the crown. The Pogues
are left devastated. They have lost one of their own, but they refuse to give up. Now,
they are united by one final mission. Go after Groff and get revenge for J.J.
