This Art Deco cabinet wasn't meant to look like this...
What started as a tired and heavily worn Art Deco display cabinet turned into one of the most interesting restoration projects I've worked on. This beautiful 1930s-style cabinet had plenty of problems to overcome, including damaged veneer, a tired finish and areas that had seen better days. But rather than simply restore it to how it originally looked, I wanted to take the opportunity to create something completely unique and bespoke. In this furniture restoration, I'll take you through the entire process — from the initial condition of the cabinet, through the repairs, preparation and refinishing, to the finished piece. The result is an Art Deco cabinet with a completely new lease of life and, I think, a character all of its own.

A craftsman restores a vintage 1930s blue deco cabinet into a custom cocktail bar. The process involves overcoming structural damage, replacing aged glass, and modifying the interior for wine storage. Through meticulous sanding, painting in \"Dock Blue,\" and adding modern LED lighting, the piece is transformed from a damaged antique into a functional, stylish bar.
Hello, thank you for coming in.
In this video, I'm going to work on the turquoise deco cabinet.
It's going to be something specific at the end of this video.
It's giving me a lot of problems, but hopefully you'll enjoy the process.
Tell me in your own words what you think, but hold on a moment,
Thank you for watching and liking the video. And as always, thank you for watching.
Alright, I'm going to reheat it.
I need to come out to people.
He has passed through people, and I have reached the other people.
I'm going to leave. It's difficult because this is the way it is,
You can't just come out.
This is being connected, so I'm not going to join in coming out.
I'm not going anywhere.
I believe I must do what I must do.
I can train the people.
I'm going to look at those who are being trained.
A little bit of water.
I believe the entrance will be successful.
That is, nothing more open in the world.
Oh, oh, carry on with that.
The water has already come out.
They are also blessed here.
The questions seek to add these people here,
They will have bottles of water.
Well, we do need to look at that, but that's mostly out of the question.
Proceed with that.
There are many parts to this.
That's not at all what I want to think about.
I can't raise the water high enough to achieve that.
Otherwise, that would interfere with the way.
Alright then, let me think.
Alright, changing the plan.
The green plan is not proceeding because of that.
It's not going back because of the water.
It's not going up because of the way.
The rooms are full of that.
There is not as much part as it looks on the plan
I'll make them happen on the water of the glass.
Felly, I'm going to think about how they got the glass.
They must get the glass.
I think so, and please check me if I'm right in the comments,
They would have inserted the glass and then placed the panel in front of them.
Felly, having worked from that log house,
I need to come from the panel ahead to come from this glass.
It is not common because it has been made.
Yes, clearly, there is a part of this green here.
Felly, I'm going to think about coming out of this blue one safely.
Yes, I think he's there.
This is the same thing on the water as the green ahead.
It's not about papers; it's about issues.
Felly, they are matters that have been tied to them.
Obviously, it's looking better, and we're going to do something about it.
I wanted to show you this.
You can see that the inside of the cabinet has been done.
Clearly, before the glass came from the glass, because they had been separated.
The water would have affected the water.
Felly, it seems they must have added the glass before pouring the water on them.
Felly, I believe that is a good decision.
Alright, onward.
That is the support provided by the green party, which has been shared,
As you can see, many of them are blessed.
That is blessed.
That's wonderful, that's wonderful.
In fact, most of them are blessed.
The majority of the bits they remember are inside.
It's too wired to be effective, therefore,
They are not good.
The majority of them are not important in the world,
felly, in openlijk
That was an important opportunity.
On the other hand,
We'll take it from him right now,
On gallant mind in the bin.
There are plenty of resources available to do that.
I'll get it for you.
I want to emphasize how important this is to come out, clearly it has been suppressed.
We're hoping for a little milk.
I don't know if this worked.
He isn't doing anything, but I think he's coming out.
That was much easier than I thought.
Well, I don't think the roads would be in the way they're dealing with that.
Dyna pam yw nhw wedi'i golygu.
We haven't made any definite decisions on this matter yet, but I do have some ideas.
Alright, next.
Is that not fair?
Of course not, that's not bad.
Alright, here's a bit of what I've edited, and I had to track this down.
It is part of the first society.
These are part of the glass. These are part of the unique glass made for the wedding.
This one has a crack at the end.
Felly, I'm going to have a part edited.
I can't edit the glass in this manner; I'll just give you the thing.
Felly, I'm going to get one edited, but first I need to get it sorted out.
The reason I'm afraid of this is, I'll show you.
There's a crack there, hopefully you can see it.
I think you can go there.
Felly, it's cracking over there.
Felly, all the panel needs to be unstuck, and I need to try to free it without pushing.
Felly, let's draw that to the glass and see if you can go get a part.
The big problem is this.
It has been included as a fire exit.
This is from the 1930s, so it has often been used over time.
I've done one of those before, and it takes me a lifetime, a lifetime, and a lifetime to get the glass out.
Moreover, those beasts are very similar.
They're my people; I must do well by them.
Felly, I need to go get the glass out.
It will take a lifetime.
We will begin.
Alright.
I'm going to try harder.
Otherwise, often not proceeding with the green, because I don't want any other panels involved.
Oh, that's good.
That's well protected.
That's another thing as well.
I have already submitted all the little bits of the pudding or the custard or whatever you would like to say.
He has a large glass of beer.
He has a large glass of beer.
Felly, that's a shame.
I am receiving it.
There's one here and it's being drawn well.
Felly, wow.
It's beginning.
I'm not going.
Goodbye.
That's going to be more than that.
Oh, that's good.
Iaun.
It only took a little bit of the year to get that sorted out.
Alright.
I can get more of that now, but this is good enough.
I'm not sure they'll do any more for me than this.
For health and support foundations, but we'll see.
That's the other water.
The green is good for now.
It's the building at the end, so I hope we can write it down.
There's a bit more here.
Now, thank you very much,
That's the one that went out to the other side.
Felly, the moment has not yet passed, but it is passing.
It was, I would have had to start that water and that water in order to write this.
As is obvious, you can see at what time the water will start flowing.
Felly, this is two days' worth of work to write that.
That's all the ways through.
Felly, I'm going to...
Alright, what am I going to do?
I need a bit more, but I'll go see if I can write a little more clw.
Alright, I need to do a bit of research on this basic cabinet.
I hope you can see this.
There are just a few small additions here that are fine.
The weather looks good.
At the front of this, it must be a place where the arch is over the water.
That's it.
I hope you can see this.
That's it.
I did it.
That's coming in.
It's coming in a bit.
Felly, about this water, I need to get a glass of this water.
It's easy to say, but not so easy to do.
You'll have to let us do it.
I have made this resource, but I wanted to write this down.
This part has received more attention, just like other parts.
That's the part.
This part.
That's the part here.
That's the only part.
It's on a level with that bench.
I have a bit of money, but if I were to put the mahogany money on it, it would come out a little.
Felly, I don't know what that water is.
They would not have remembered it without the reminder.
I don't know why they didn't do it.
Felly, before I strip this, I'm going to look at it to see what it looks like.
I'll weld Beth allwn i wneud gyda hynny.
Well, and if I'm honest, I'm not sure what we can do about that.
Otherwise, if I give him the money, as I say, I won't be left with much of that portion.
I'm going to be back by the time we get there.
Another thing to show as well.
I don't know if you can see it on the camera.
I think you can.
You can see this strip of tape here.
This is the end of the story.
Can you see how it's going there?
Dyna's different.
I don't know whether this had been connected before.
Someone has been contacted through this window.
Otherwise, I was realizing as I was making the water.
The weather is indeed cold.
That's what I thought.
It's been a while.
I hope you can see that there.
I'm realizing a few things about that.
I know better when I'm going to come out.
That looks as if it were connected through a few as well.
He keeps contacting her.
It's dry.
I hope to do something about this offer.
By the time I'm leading.
I realize in advance that I thought this had been connected.
She has been connected in the years.
Otherwise, I cannot see them having done this.
The bread that had been produced.
Can you see how the requirements have been set up?
Why?
One by one.
At this moment.
I don't know whether that's in the garden or whether that's something...
This fence has already been installed.
What's the matter?
Someone has been sent to the focus, and the furnace has been set up there.
Yes, the truth.
There is a boy here.
I'm doing well.
The workers would have been given the stage here.
I'm going to make my own bog to mash it.
Clearly, there are many ways to go.
On the other hand...
That's what I was showing you.
I believe this offer will appear.
Clearly, of course.
I'm sure we'll discover more if we keep going.
More discoveries have been made.
Someone has been placed here in the future.
I'm not saying he installed it.
They have not been very grateful.
There.
Someone there.
Yes.
Yes.
After all, that's my nature.
At 10 o'clock, with this photographer right on the spot.
That's the best thing.
I think we're starting there.
Yes.
That's two down.
There is much more to be done.
I'm coming back to you.
What will we do.
We are.
Oh no!
Alright. Alright.
Are you ready?
Go!
Leave him be.
Oh my goodness.
Alright.
Are you happy now?
Yes.
What are you doing?
Good to see you.
I've been meaning to go use a little bit of file.
I didn't have it done.
The painters are extremely good.
I have used a small amount of firewood in various places.
Yes.
The penstipers have been made.
What we can see,
The same one or two people have been lost.
On the other hand,
I believe they are doing it.
Before I begin recording,
I'm going to do a lot of saving lives from this point on,
Otherwise, the border has been connected.
I have shown it to you most.
The border has been lost in places.
Felly,
Cyn i mi wneud hynny,
The customer is about to connect the connector slightly.
He wants to get some bottles in the fridge.
The border is slightly being lost,
Otherwise, it's much more expensive,
new finish.
AC
The cabinet is doing that for a reason.
Felly, I am receiving my contact from that connection.
I'm taking the border a little, a little, a little,
as it appears at the first boundary,
the two points.
Yeah, bro, I've got it.
You're welcome.
I don't think so.
And the end is near.
It's starting to rain.
Yes.
Felly,
a thing that would not be
I can get the border of money.
In,
I'm going to get this.
Felly, I'm going to make some initial contacts.
Yes, we can understand
I can take this.
I am receiving
A bottle of wine. Do you know what? I don't know whether this already contains wine.
Right, before I start doing anything complex, I think I'm going to put this
bottom shelf in and just see how this fits. Well, that's a result—they appear to
Right, I'm going to see if I can find another bottle of wine; I'm sure I can.
because we've got quite a few. I'm just wondering whether this isn't a
standard-sized bottle. Twenty-nine and a half. Right, slight change of plan, albeit this

and the customer wants it raised to 32 centimeters, obviously for bottles
that are slightly higher than this. So I'm going to do that, however I'm not
going to do it now because I've ordered some new shelf supports which will be here soon
arriving hopefully tomorrow, so I might as well do that tomorrow. So in the
Meanwhile, I'll start doing a bit of sanding. This bottom part obviously had the
material on before and again, it's not, it's not a particularly nice wood, and
It's quite rough, so I'm going to have to sand this properly. The inside as well.
is not really a very nice piece of wood either. I think I've got a solution to

to this weather. This is the inside, around the sides, and the top. Again, this
is just plywood. It's the original face of the plywood; it hasn't been
veneered, and whoever finished it in the past has burned through some of it
veneer on the plywood. So I have a plan for this plywood, so I just need to
give it a fairly simple sand. Right, this is a problem that I've got. This is
inside the piece and it's a bit of a mess. It's full of scratches, so I've
smoothed it off because I'm going to cover this with something, but I wanted to
Leave a wooden border there, but you can see the veneer on the plywood there.
has been completely blown through. I was going to use some of this to cover it
but it will make it higher, and the door has almost no clearance left.
The door shuts into the cabinet, so it might catch on the door, so I can't do that. So
I'm going to have to think of something else. I don't know what that is yet, but
Yeah, it keeps throwing things at me with this piece. I think that veneer repair before
Just lifting it a little. Yeah, I need to get some glue under there.
Oh well, my new fittings for the shelf supports have arrived, so I just need to move them.
These. Well, I'm not moving them, but I need to put some new ones two centimeters above.
This part earlier, if you recall, contained information about. I'm not including any material
back on, but obviously it's not the most attractive piece of wood this. So I've got a
a couple of ideas on what to do, but for either of those I need this to be pretty much
smooth, and there are many gouges in this area, particularly a few
cracks, so I just need to go over this with a bit of filler. It's time to do
something I've never done before, and that is using putty to seal glass. The
The reason I'm doing that is because of the shape, and it already has the putty in.
I don't really know what else to do to fix it because of the shape and it
It'll need shaping, beading, and things like that, and it wouldn't match anything.
Otherwise. I had the piece of glass cut by a guy I use for glass. I'm absolutely
terrible at cutting glass. I break more than I manage to cut. So I need to put

Linseed oil putty. Take out as much as you need. I have no idea how much you need.
So let's start with that and smooth it off in your hands. Apparently this
It looks a bit sticky. Well, it didn't do that online. Yeah, I think that might
Something must have gone wrong. It turned out like plasticine when I watched the video. Oh
Goodness me. Right, if anyone who knows how to put it knows what's going on

myself up. Right change of plan. That was a bit of a nightmare, that putty, but it
It looked like this had separated a bit, so I gave it a really good mix.
and it's also really warm today, and it's been in the workshop, which is really
warm. So I've actually had it in the fridge, but it's a lot better, but I'm not
going to use it, and the reason I'm not going to use it is because I've just
You've seen how long it takes to cure. Fully curing takes about two to three weeks.
So obviously that's not an option. I don't have two to three weeks to spare.
Moving on to this cupboard for this cabinet. So I've ordered a different product.
I did a bit of research and ordered a different product. That one will be arriving tomorrow, so
On to the next thing.
Right, finally time for the stain. I'm going to do this in a brown mahogany. Don't
I don't want to get too far away from the mahogany veneer, but I don't want it as
red, so I'm going to go with a darker stain, but before I do that, I'm going to
touch up first with the stain, some of the areas that I've repaired, and some of
the areas that are lighter than the majority of the cabinet. So I'll do that
First let them dry, then give it a full coat of stain, and we'll see.
See how that looks.
This is where the veneer had burned through, and I was really thinking, I can't.
Kind of finish this in a wood finish; I'll have to cover it up somehow.
So I did have a couple of ideas, but I wasn't 100% sure about them, so I thought, well
Just apply a bit of stain and see how it looks; to be honest, it doesn't look good.
that bad, and once it's got a finish on it, I think it'll look fine, and it's
better than what I was going to have to do to it, and I just think it'll look
nicer in the overall balance of the design. So I'm going to stain everything.
Inside, and then I'll decide 100% whether I'm going to leave it as that.
It's had two coats of the stain now and it looks quite good. There is some
touch-ups to be done where the burn-through in the veneer is. I've done mine
best with the stain, but it still needs a bit more work. But before I do that, I'm
I'm just going to apply its first coat of lacquer and then see how it looks.
Now is the right time to start doing some of the repairs on the burnt-through veneer. So
I have a selection of pens here that I'm going to use to get started. The
Stain hasn't done too bad a job, but I mean, other than replacing the entire thing
a piece of veneer, which you know wasn't in the budget—let's make this as nice as we can
can. All I'm trying to do here is roughly match the color as best I can and then
pull out some of the darker areas of grain. It's a bit of a messy job, but it's
Getting there. I think the idea is knowing when to stop. Okay, right, it's
Time to fix this glass. Obviously, I told you before I'm not going to use it.
linseed oil putty because it takes three weeks to cure. So I've got this. This was
recommended to me. Glazius putty. Now this takes about 24 to 48 hours to
which is much better. Right, it's time to start working on the doors, and as you saw
Earlier I just gave these a key. So the doors are going to have some color added.
to them. Normally, I wouldn't use a primer with the paint I use because
It doesn't need it, but because of this sanding here, some of the finish has
I have gone through it; I used some filler in part, so I'm going to use a primer on
This one. So don't worry, it's not going to be this color. It's not white. I mean
Ideally, I should use a darker primer for this, but I've just checked—I haven't.
Got any in? Rather than having to go and get some, I'll just use this. It's time to add some.
color and this is the color. This is called dock blue by a company called
Little Green and it's a really dark true blue, almost like an ink blue.
Looks obviously lighter there, but it will dry darker. It's going to look quite
light on this because I've used a white primer instead of a dark primer.
The first coat always looks awful. Right, I've been hesitating about what to do.
With this, I'm going to do something to the back, and I was going to do the same with the
bottom, but to try and bring some of the blue from the outside doors into the cabinet
because you'll be able to see through it a little bit, I think I'm going to paint it
Just this section, and I think that could look alright. Obviously, this is the back.
This is covered in the material, so I need to remove this material first.
Right, I've got all the rubbishy stuff off all the material, but it's going to need quite a few
repairs where it's damaged when I'm trying to take it off. So I needed to get it off but rather
There's nothing wrong with trying to get a piece of wood big enough to cut in one piece.
It just needs a few repairs, so I'll do that off camera and come back to you when it's interesting.
It's coming along. This has had about three coats of paint already. These edges were really annoying to do.
And I'll probably have to do a bit of touch-up, but it's time to start adding a little pizzazz to this.
It's going to be a cocktail bar cabinet setup, so this needs to look quite stylish.
So you might have gotten the idea here—this part is going to be a different color, but I wanted to
Put a board around the edge, and obviously there was no distinct line, so I'm making one.
with the masking tape. I haven't done it as wide as that; I've done it narrower because there isn't a
There's a lot of meat on this part, so if I'd made it that wide, it would look too big, so it's just right like this.
with a small board around the edge. I'm not going to mask the glass because I can scrape that back
and get a nice edge. I've had a bit of a nightmare touching up these doors where a bit of the paint
It came off with the masking tape. I tried touching it up, and you could see it, so I've sanded some parts.
off and redone it and everything. I've got it to where I need it to be, but to achieve a uniform sheen
a layer of protection to the entire piece, and to add that little bit of extra safeguard, I'm going to apply a coat of

come out nice, but there's going to be stuff put on this, so rather than just leaving it painted, I'm
I'm going to apply a coat of varnish as well. So I'm going to add a decorative finish to this.
but before I do, this is really, really dry, so to give myself the best chance, I'm going to give
This is a coat of adhesive; let it dry first. Okay, that's completely dry now; it's time to proceed.
Put this lovely item on. The customer has chosen this one, and it's really nice. Let me know what you think.
Think about it in the comments—I think it's lovely. Okay, the customer wants some lights installed in the cabinet.
so before I put the back panel on, I've got some she just wants white, she doesn't want
colored lights, so I have these slimline cupboard lights and these work on a timer and
remote control, so instead of having wires coming out the back. So all I've done is I've
marked up where the shelf positions are going to be, and then I've marked up where I want the
light, and I'm going to put it in this small recess at the back so you won't be able to see it
them. I have tested the remote, and it does work from the front through the glass, and they come
with this metal strip, which is really good because what I can do is stick that strip on
and then these can just be easily unclipped to be recharged instead of sticking this
And it being a permanent fix, plus having to run cables in to charge it. Okay, there you go.
Cool, next, let me get one. Let me get one. Oh no, okay, bye-bye. This is off—just a flying visit.
There's a reason I'm putting the doors on before I put the back on, and that is because
These locks don't actually work, and I can't find a key that fits properly to unlock it anyway.
I need to put some magnetic catches on them, so I need the doors in place so I know where they are.
Right, I've got a big problem—these hinges aren't adjustable at all; they just go where they go.
Now, before I started refinishing this door, it fit but it was really tight, which is why I didn't put
any additional veneer on the inside? Now I've given it coats of paint, which obviously adds
some thickness to it—I just went to shut it and it was a mile off; it kept banging against the
So what I've had to do is sand all that paint away. I've tried adjusting all the hinges.
about five times and it's still doing the same thing I don't know why other than the paint was
Too thick, but it was a mile away, so unless this has moved somehow and dried out, I don't know.
Anyway, I think what I'm going to do is take this door off and sand all the paint off.
and just have a wood finish on that edge, oh dear, right, finally
after about two hours of work that I didn't anticipate I'd need to do just to get these
doors to fit back in, I've done it. So what I've done is I've sanded all the paint off all the
primer off and I've taken it down a little more just to give me a bit of play, and then what
What I've done is I've stained it in the same color that I used on the cabinet, just to try and match it.
All together, it actually looks okay, and I managed to do it without damaging the paint on the front.
or the back, what I'm going to do now is I'm going to apply a protective layer, and I'm going to use
Howard's feed and wax; now, I wouldn't generally use this as the final coat, but because I can't
I can't afford to add any more thickness to this edge; it will soak in and give it a level.
For protection, that's what I'm going to have to use, and that's what I'm going to use, right? Okay.
So we're pretty much at the end of this one now. If you've made it this far, I really appreciate it.
I know it's a long video, but it took a lot of work, and I just wanted to try and show you.
Everything that went into producing this, I really like the end result of this—it's a piece of
furniture I'd love to own myself, unfortunately it's not for me, but fortunately the customer
Absolutely loved it as well—lots of work, but definitely worth it in the end.
