Welcome to the Full Life Crew Podcast.
Hi, welcome back to the Full Life Crew. I'm Debra and this is Jared, my husband.
And today we're just going to be talking about stuff. This is our Just Stuff Podcast where we
talk about just stuff. And today we're talking about an event that happened to us that probably
and we got in a car wreck. We did. It was very, it's very fast too. It was very fast.
So we had just recently bought a Tesla and I love that little car. It had the self-driving
mode. It did. I still think you're crying over there. Yeah. And when we first got the car,
Debra did not like the car. It wasn't that I didn't like it. I didn't trust it yet. Yeah.
She didn't trust it, especially on the self-driving. Yeah, I didn't trust on self-driving.
So, but after she got comfortable with it, you really. I did. I would be like, do you have to
go anywhere? I'm taking your car. And I would take his car all the time. Yeah. So the self-driving
is really nice. Unfortunately, this particular day where we got in the wreck, we did not have
the self-driving on. No, because we were going from, we're just going like 200 yards down the
road. Yeah. Like not far at all. Yeah. So we're just going down the road. So I didn't turn the
self-driving on. I do believe that if I had the self-driving on the car, when we do the self
driving, the car is very cautious. So the way the wreck happened, I think the car would have
probably made a different decision. I don't know. I don't know. It happened so fast that I am not
even sure if it could have avoided it. So here's what happened. We went to Denny's. Happened.
Malia had a volleyball game. After the game, we went to Denny's. We ate and we were going to go.
We were going to Petco to get a fish. Well, when we were, we pulled up to a red light. So we left
Denny's. We pulled out of Denny's. Went, I don't know, 100 yards and there's a red light. We stopped
at the red light. Turned green. We started going. There's a bank and then there's Petco. So right
there. So we were probably going maybe, I don't know, maybe 30 miles an hour at the time. Yeah,
we weren't going fast at all because the speed limit, I think, is only 40 on that road. And she
was in some kind of SUV, like a midsize SUV. And she was in the parking lot and then she pulled up
to the edge of the road and she stopped. She was coming out of Petco. So we couldn't turn into the
drive that she was in. No, she, okay, now that I think about it, no, she was in the parking lot and
she was coming and she slowed down. I thought she was going to stop. So I kept going and
all of a sudden I hear you scream, this lady's not stopping. I think she actually had stopped
slightly and then she just hit the gas as hard as she could. So the street is, it's a four,
it's five lanes. It has two where you drive in and a turning lane. And I think she was trying to get
across. That's what she said. She was trying to go across the street. And so when she left the Petco,
she left the Petco. Yep. So we're driving. We're headed eastbound and we're on the lane closest to
the outside lane. The outside lane. And we're driving and then it looks like she's stopping.
So I'm still going and then all of a sudden she just darts out. I said a few words that I probably
shouldn't have said. And, uh, and she ends up when she's, as she's coming, I swerved just slightly
because it happened so fast. It happened so fast. It happened so fast. She hit the back door and the
back tire. She popped the tire and ripped the door apart. But what happened to us is we spun
around in about a second. Yeah. I don't, I don't even, I remember being, it was loud and being hit.
And then when I looked up, I was in the same lane we were in, but facing west. Yes. She had spun us
180. It was one of those deals to where you went from, you know, you're enjoying your day, you're
collective to your adrenaline is pumping through your body almost within seconds. And she hit us
pretty hard. We both had terrible pain on, cause we were driving this way and she hit us coming
from that way. So we both had like, I think we both had like mild concussions. Probably. So I
don't, I, I was so, it was kind of confusing for a while. It's like, I, like I said, I felt like I
had a few beers. I felt drunk. It was very disorienting. Yeah. I was really worried about
you because we ended up, uh, calling an ambulance because you were feeling like you were going to
throw up. I did. You were in a lot of pain. You had your neck. But I was like, I think I'm okay.
I think it's just the initial being hit so hard, you know. And then the seat belt caught you a
little bit. Yeah. Seat belt kind of clotheslined me a little bit, but other than that. And the way
she hit us, the momentum of my, my car like took us and spun us. Yeah. So none of the airbags went
off. No. Cause it wasn't that kind of hit. Now, if she would have, if I wouldn't have swerved.
She would have hit me. She would have hit you straight on. Straight on. And then airbags would
explode all in the car. So because I swerved, she clips the back part of the car and then
pushes. It was almost like when you watch those, those movies where the cop is chasing them and
they hit the back corner and spin them around. That's exactly what it felt like. And then she,
she ended up in the middle. She ended up in the middle of the road. Yeah. So I was highly upset.
I know you were, you're like my car, my car. But we were able to, so we were able to get off the
street and pull back into the petco. At least get off the street. Cause we were kind of blocking
everybody else. Well, we're sitting there looking at the oncoming traffic and they're looking at us.
Yeah. So we were able, cause she's basically spun us around and we're right by the entrance
of the petco. So we just drove in. So the car was drivable for a couple feet, but you wouldn't want to
put it on the interstate. No. So we kind of limped it into the parking lot and parked it. And then she
was out there in the middle of the road and her bumper was gone. And then she had this, underneath
the plastic part was the metal bumper and that thing just, it was peeled back because it caught
my, my car. Oh yeah. And um, she was having a panic attack. Yeah. She, yeah, I didn't really, you talked
to her. You had got out and tried to calm her down. Cause she was, she's a younger girl. She was
door dashing. She was pretty upset. Well, I hope whoever she was door dashing ended up getting
their, their door dash eventually. I don't know if they got it. Yeah. But that was, that was an
interesting experience. Have y'all been in a wreck? What, comment below the, like your experience,
if you've been in a wreck, you know, was it a bad wreck, a small wreck? Did you go through all that
stuff? The, you know, it's a very, um, it's a very, um, edgy type thing. Yeah. Yeah. A couple of days
though, we, we started feeling better. So now that wasn't your first car wreck though. No. What was
your first one? Oh gosh. In high school. I had just finished high school and I was in college
and I was coming, I was, had gone to McNeese or maybe it was even work. It was either McNeese or
work. I come over the bridge and it was raining. And of course I was young and just the guy in
front of me didn't have taillights. Apparently, apparently he stopped and I just kept going.
Did you hit him hard? I don't remember. I remember I had to get a new car. So apparently I did.
Well, but he kept going. That's the thing. It's like I hit the brakes. I think I skid
and I think I bumped him, but like he just kept going. Like he didn't even stop? He didn't even
stop. So, so the person behind me didn't hit me. Oh. And so it was like, and even when the, the
cop got there, I was like, hey, like I bumped someone, like I hit somebody, but they just kept
driving. I don't know where they are. They just left. So I don't know if I hit them hard enough
for them to even know. He was in a truck? I don't remember. I just remember hitting somebody.
And then they just left? They just left. That's kind of weird. I didn't know that part. Yeah,
they just left and the person behind me hit me. And so that's, yeah. I wonder if the person got
home. Was there damage to the front of your car? There was. A lot or just a little bit?
That I don't remember. Yeah, years ago there was. Tell us how many years it was.
A many, many years ago. Too many to tell. Yeah. And then you ended up getting a new car? I did
have to get a new car. Because your first car was red. Yes, and then I got a black one. The same
car. So what, what were you, do you remember how you felt in that, in that accident? I do. Was it
the same? Daddy's gonna kill me. My dad's going to kill me. Oh. I remember that. I was terrified
to tell him. He didn't kill me, but I got in some trouble because I wasn't paying attention.
Well, that wasn't my first car wreck either. I got in one in high school too. Yeah. It's almost
like maybe high school kids shouldn't drive. You know. But my wreck technically wasn't my fault.
Really? No. Okay. So here's how this went down. Okay. So, you know, my, my dad owned a dealership
and so my mom always drove a demo. Okay. So instead of mom going to get the demo,
she sent me to go get the demo. You're the errand guy. Yeah, usually in high school you run all the
errands. You run all the errands. Which is crazy because that's when most of your accidents happen.
Yeah. When you're young and you're not paying attention and you haven't been doing it long
enough. So maybe we should change our errand people. Maybe so. We still send the teenagers out.
We do. Someone do all the errands. Maybe we should just door dash it. It may be cheaper. Door dash it.
I mean think. If you get one accident, your insurance goes up a hundred bucks a month. It'd
have been cheaper to door dash it. I'm gonna. Okay. I'll door dash you. Here. I'll put in an order.
You're gonna go get it for me. What she's talking about is me and my, me and my son made a video. We,
we never door dashed before. We took the Tesla before it got wrecked and we went and door dashed
and we did it to see how much money we could make so he could buy a phone, a phone case. Yeah. But
anyway. So we get to the dealership. We get the demo and it was a, uh, people probably don't
watch and don't even remember these things. It was called an S10 blazer.
Okay. Now they had the big K blazer. Then they had a little small blazer. This was a smaller one
and I had my girlfriend at the time and then I had a friend of mine that was with me. Okay. And,
uh, the guy in the back was really excited, I guess cause he was riding in a new car and then
he was also, you know, I guess he was trying to impress the young lady we had in the car too.
High strung personality type guy. He was acting kind of silly. And so back in those days,
the floor mats on the cars, you know, this is probably early, uh, mid nineties, early nineties.
The, when you flip the floor mat over, they had these giant cones on the bottom. The little spikes,
the spikes, I guess that was to hold the mat so it wouldn't slip. Well, so I'm, we're leaving the
dealership and, and he's back there playing and he's putting the mat on his face. He puts the mat
on his face and he takes it off and he, and he has like the, you know, in his face, he's like,
look at that, look at that, look at that. The imprint. Yeah. Well, I'm not really, look,
I can see him in the mirror, but I'm not, I'm driving. And right there where we left,
there's an intersection and we're coming up on the intersection and it's, I'm turning right
and the light's green. So as I turn, he takes the floor mat, comes over,
comes like from behind me cause he's in the back seat. He comes this way, grabs the floor mat and
then pulls it across my face while I'm driving. Oh gosh. So what happens is, is when I didn't,
I didn't even see him doing it. Pulls the floor mat across my face. So I have a floor mat with
all these spikes across my face and when he pulled me back, my, my foot hit the gas.
Like just out of reflex. Just out of reflex. I mean, imagine somebody come grab you from behind,
you weren't expecting it. Yeah. So he pulled, pulled my head back. I hit the gas not knowing
that I hit the gas. The vehicle accelerates and then we end up t-boning another car.
And there was a little kid in the car. Oh no. Yeah. And to kind of give you an idea of what
happened, all the windows, all the four windows on the side blew out. You must have hit the gas
hard. Yeah. And, and we did try to stop, but back then they, those, the cars don't stop like they
do today. And that big thing just kept going. They were in a really small car too. Anyway,
the little girl wasn't hurt and the mom wasn't hurt. Nobody was hurt, but it was a traumatic
experience. Yeah, I imagine so. And then, so I didn't want my buddy to get in trouble.
So I never told my dad what happened. Oh no. I never told him about the floor mat and he,
you know, he worked right there. So he come and met us and he was so mad. Oh, I imagine so. He was
so mad at me. So. He was ripping into me and letting me have it and I just couldn't rat my
buddy out. I just couldn't do it. I never did. And so Jacob, if you're watching, I never ratted you
out. I never, I never, I never told the truth about what really happened. I just took the blame
for it. And, uh, yeah, that wasn't a pleasant experience. Um, I imagine not. And then the
aftermath of the wreck, because we hit them, uh, it cost us some, some extra cash. I imagine so.
So he wasn't happy about that either. I imagine not. I try to be a very cautious driver and I
like the Tesla because the Tesla is more cautious than me. Right. Right. So my very first wreck was
a traumatic experience, especially the post wreck. Yeah. Yeah. So I try to be cautious. Yeah. I try
to be extra cautious when I drive. And I liked the Tesla. I personally think that if you are
under the age of 21, I think they should make self-driving cars mandatory. For everybody?
Yeah. And I know a lot of people were like self-driving cars, those things are going to
kill you. I'm telling you right now, they're safer than the people out there. You gotta think
about people that are out there driving. Some people are driving drunk. That's true. Some people
are driving medicated. Yeah. Some people are driving, they just drive crazy. Some people are
just bad drivers. Some people are just bad drivers. They're just bad drivers. Some people have like,
you know, like vision problems. Yeah. And, you know, you, you know, you really think about what
we're doing just, and like on a two-lane road, it's almost crazy. Like just, you're just driving
on this, and the only thing separating you is a piece of paint. I mean literally, like it's almost,
it almost feels, ever since I got the Tesla, driving a vehicle seems like so 1970-ish.
Like it seems so old. Why would you do that?
I think, okay, so I think a lot of people like to have control over the vehicle. And I think that
was part of mine when we first got it was, you know, it's like, I felt like I had no control.
Like I did not trust it. Like it was very, and then after I drove it for a few times and took
it on a trip, then I was like, okay, yeah, it, I do trust this car. So I think it's more of a trust issue
and control issue over that. But yeah, so I don't know if the self-driving would have avoided
the Shrek or not, because the way she come out was just like, it's almost like it was unavoidable.
It was, it was just there. I think, I think if the self-driving would have been on,
she would have probably still hit us the way it happened, but she would have probably hit
you instead of the back of the car, the back door. She would have hit you, which would have probably
been worse. But, because I think the self-driving car would have, now I say that, but the other day
I was driving on the interstate and there was something fell off the back of a truck and that
thing just immediately, boom, took off and avoided it. Yeah, I don't know. It's a good, it's one of those
what ifs. So you've been in a wreck, you've been in two wrecks now. I've been in two wrecks. Let's
keep it at that. Yeah, I don't, and then the car's damaged and you got to get the insurance. I know,
and you've been without a car since Saturday, so day three. No, Saturday. Yeah, day four. The
whole insurance deal, like they have to wait on this and wait on that. I mean, it was pretty obvious
she hit us, so give me a rental car. There's just so many flags nowadays. You gotta, you gotta go
around all this stuff and it's just, yeah, so it was no fun. So that's our, just stuff, you know.
It's like that was our wreck for this time. Have you been in a wreck? What is, what does your driving history look like?
Uh, and kids. Are you a bad driver? West has been in a wreck. Someone hit West, yeah. Cole's been in an
accident. Yeah. Was Alyssa ever in an accident? I don't think Alyssa's ever been in an accident.
I know she's hit some curbs because if you look at her rims, they're all chewed up. She's hit some
curbs. Oh, you had another accident. You got in an accident with a yellow pole. Oh, let's not talk
about that. Have y'all ever been in a parking lot where you hit those yellow poles? They have
usually like around the light pole they have the yellow poles. I mean who puts a yellow pole right
there? It's painted yellow. How'd you hit it? A park next to it and it was nighttime and I was
picking Alyssa up late at the gym because she had basketball. It was for my game and instead of
pulling out to turn, I just turned because there was nobody in the parking spot next to me. They're
short and I just and I hit it and I just everything in me sank and I was like I don't even know if I
can get off the pole because it was in the door. Oh no. Remember that? I don't really remember. Oh,
I do and then I had to come home and tell you. I tried not to get too involved that way I wouldn't
get too upset about it. Yeah, I had to come home and tell you. Because it's one thing to get in an
accident with another vehicle. It's another thing to get in an accident with a fixed structure that's
been there forever and you went to school there and that pole's probably been there since you went
to high school there. The pole hasn't moved or done anything in 40 years. Let's not talk about
this anymore. Let's move on. Well anyway, thank you for watching our Just Stuff podcast. If you don't
