And we have some breaking news from the music world.
Iconic country singer, actress and philanthropist Dolly Parton has died.
Her family announced the news earlier this hour on social media.
Let's bring in the CBC's Trisha Kindleman with more, Trisha.
I don't know.
This is just sad news.
It just, to me, just sort of came out of nowhere.
What do we know?
It really did.
Well, it kind of did, I'll say.
It really is sort of that day, that news, that a lot of people, particularly country
music fans, really didn't want this day to come.
We know that she was 80 years old today, and she has died at the age of 80.
Now, last week, she did tell People magazine that she was dealing with some health issues,
and she said they were things that she hadn't been paying attention to for a while, sort
of while she was taking care of Carl, as she put it.
Now, Dolly fans will know that Carl was her much-loved longtime husband, and he died back
in March of 2025 at the age of 82.
So now it does seem like, since his passing, she has really sort of tried to focus on her
own health, but there has been a number of stories, particularly in recent months, about
her sort of having to cancel and postpone some dates and performances.
There was a residency that was expected to kick off this fall in Las Vegas.
That had been postponed at this point.
Now, obviously, that will unfortunately have to be canceled, and her fans will not, unfortunately,
be able to make that trip or head to Vegas to see that show.
But if we want to look at her career a little bit, it spanned six decades.
She recorded famous hits like Jolene, 9to5, which that actually was not only also a movie,
but also later became a Broadway show, which she co-wrote and was a major, major part of
as well.
She also, of course, had the hit song, I Will Always Love You.
So no, not only for her musical talents, but also for her acting.
She was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
She was also a philanthropist.
She was really, really generous and a giving, warm individual.
I think that was something that people saw when they experienced her, either on television
or on stage.
Her warmth just was, it just exuded and reached every corner of the room.
But she had something called the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and that was a reading
program for children.
Now, she had 11 siblings.
She grew up very poor, and she said that that was something that she always wanted to provide
for children when she was older.
She wanted to be able to help children read.
So now it was a reading program where children would be able to receive free books from the
age of zero to five.
So someone that has had an impact on not only country music fans, not only movie watchers,
but also the lives of many, many young children across America and Canada as well.
That program has gone international.
So Dolly Parton will be remembered for her philanthropy, for her music, and for her many,
many other contributions.
I will remember her as a sparkly little dot on a stage in Nashville many, many years ago.
She was just precious, I will say that, Andrew.
Her performance was amazing, as always.
We'll continue to watch for reaction from celebrities in the music world.
I'm sure there will be an outpouring of grief to this news today.
Absolutely.
She was loved.
Pure sunshine.
Absolutely.
Trisha, thank you.
Thank you.
