First Photographs of Japan (1863-1866) reveal an untouched Old World society [Ancient Architecture]

Howdy ya’ll. Today I’ve uncovered for you a collection considered to be the first quality photographs ever taken in Japan. The photographs highlight the haunting landscape and monumental fortifications of Japan, at a time before the true industrialization of the kingdom took hold. These images, dated to 1863 through 1866, are said to be the work of Felix Beato, a rather mysterious figure who appears to have been active in most parts of the world in the mid 19th century.

Cascading through the nearly untouched society of Japan, these photographs are considered the first true look into both high society and the working class of Japan, at a time when no other European photographer had ever been given access. We will view Nagasaki, Kyoto, and most incredible of all Tokyo, which at the time of these photographs was still known as Edo, named after the Edo Castle.

Out of every Old World society I’ve attempted to uncover the earliest photographs of, images of Japan have always alluded me, until today, and this collection showcases a somewhat hidden society, with pockets of culture tucked away inside the most ancient of fortifications.
