737 AD: Charles Martel Strikes Back — The Campaign That Changed Gaul

In 737 AD, Charles Martel launched one of the most important and often overlooked military campaigns of the early Middle Ages. After the famous Battle of Tours, the Frankish leader did not simply wait for another attack. He marched south, targeting Umayyad strongholds and pushing the war deep into Gaul.

The campaign began with Avignon, a strategic city on the Rhône that had fallen under Umayyad control. Charles Martel and his forces surrounded the city, broke through its defenses, and captured the stronghold. But Avignon was only the beginning.

Charles then turned toward Septimania and Narbonne, one of the most important centers of Umayyad power in southern Gaul. When a relief army arrived from the south, Charles was forced to make a crucial decision. Part of his army remained around Narbonne while he led another force toward the approaching enemy.

Near the River Berre, the two armies finally met.

Charles Martel chose his ground carefully. His troops held their formation, waited for the Umayyad army to advance, and struck when the enemy's formation began to lose cohesion. The relief army was defeated, but Narbonne itself remained unconquered. Charles therefore changed his strategy, attacking and devastating several strongholds around the city before finally withdrawing.
