On February twenty-fourth, nineteen seventy-eight, five friends attended a basketball game in Chico, California, and then began driving home.
They never arrived.

Four days later, their car was discovered on an isolated mountain road in Plumas National Forest, far away from the route they should have taken. The vehicle still worked and had fuel, yet all five men had apparently abandoned it and continued through deep snow on foot.

Months later, searchers discovered a remote Forest Service trailer containing the body of Ted Weiher. Evidence suggested he had survived for weeks, despite food and heating equipment being available nearby.

Three more men were eventually found dead in the wilderness.

The fifth, Gary Mathias, was never found.

Decades later, nobody has been able to explain what made the Yuba County Five drive into those mountains or why they abandoned their car and kept walking.
