The King Who Saved Paris | Odo of France

Odo of Paris became one of the most important rulers of late ninth-century West Francia. Before becoming king, he served as Count of Paris and gained great fame during the Viking siege of the city in 885–886, when he helped lead its defence against a powerful Norse army.
His courage during the siege greatly increased his reputation, and in 888 he was chosen as King of West Francia. Odo ruled until his death in 898 and became the first king of the Robertian dynasty, the family that would later give rise to the House of Capet. His reign came at a time when the old Carolingian Empire was breaking apart for good, and West Francia was beginning to develop into the kingdom that would eventually become France. This is his story.
