Small Japanese House Tour (60m²) | Rustic Yet Modern Home by an Architect Couple

This house is the home of an architect couple, located in a residential neighborhood in the Tama Hills of Tokyo.

With a total floor area of just 60.70 m² (approx. 653 sq ft), this compact single-story home gently connects the dining area, kitchen, living room, and bedroom while creating a variety of comfortable places to spend time.

One of its defining features is the relationship between the interior and the garden.

Each room offers a different view of the garden and its planting. The irregular shape of the house is used to create inviting window seats and small engawa-inspired nooks throughout the home.

The dining area is filled with light reminiscent of sunlight filtering through leaves, while the living room receives soft, diffused light from its curved ceiling. In the bedroom, daylight enters through a skylight—giving each space its own distinct quality of light.

Within this small footprint, garden, light, and intimate places to pause overlap and enrich one another.
