SpaceX just Found a NEW Trick to Reduce the Risk of Starship's 3,000°C Deorbit!
Starship comes home at over 16,000 miles per hour. That's 22 times the speed of sound. And somewhere in that plunge back to Earth, the outside of the ship hits temperatures close to 3,000°C. That's hot enough to melt steel, vaporize most metals, and destroy almost anything humans have ever built to fly.
And yet, a few weeks ago, Starship splashed down so gently in the Indian Ocean that it just... floated there. SpaceX recently released a unique set of images showing an up-close look at the heat shield after it endured that brutal journey from the sky all the way down to the ocean, while Ship 40 sat in the calm waters near Christmas Island. Take a close look at those photos for a second. Aside from a few areas worn down by seawater, the heat shield actually looks in pretty good shape.

After SpaceX's engineers finished studying it, Ship 40 was loaded onto a semi-submersible vessel to begin a months-long journey back to Starbase. That journey is a challenge in itself — but the real story is what it reveals about the heat shield's evolution after Flight 12.
