SpaceX Updated New Footage Revealed Unexpected S40 Status after 32 days of Floating!
SpaceX has released new footage revealing the latest status of Starship S40 after 32 days floating in the ocean—and the condition of the spacecraft offers some fascinating clues about what happened during reentry, landing, and its long time at sea. Now loaded aboard the semi-submersible Forte, S40 is beginning its months-long journey back to Starbase for deeper inspection and analysis.
The new SpaceX S40 recovery images provide our closest look yet at the damaged heat shield, missing tiles, forward flaps, ablative material, and the engine bay. Engineers have already collected heat-shield samples and valuable data that could influence future Starship designs. After surviving an orbital-class flight, atmospheric reentry, a sea landing, and 32 days in the ocean, S40 could provide SpaceX with some of the most useful real-world engineering data yet.
Meanwhile, Starship Flight 14 preparations at Starbase are facing another delay. B21's crucial static-fire test was expected to take place on August 27, but the attempt did not happen after an earlier suspected issue involving the LOX BQD. With the system reconnected, SpaceX appears to be preparing for another attempt, but the delay could put additional pressure on the Flight 14 timeline.
And that's not all. NASA has also made an important decision regarding Artemis 3. Unlike Artemis 1 and Artemis 2, Artemis 3 will not carry CubeSats because of major changes to the mission architecture and the Space Launch System configuration. We'll explain why the CubeSats cannot fly on Artemis 3, what happened to the original lunar landing plan, and what NASA could do with CubeSat payloads on Artemis 4 and Artemis 5.
