Officials are still trying to get exact numbers, but they estimate somewhere
between 50 to 60 individuals. Here's what's going on. The Danbury mayor's
office says that on Tuesday, the first day of school here, there were reports,
multiple reports of ice agents carrying out enforcement here at Shelter Rock
Elementary and taking into custody parents who were dropping off their
Children at school. There were reports from other schools as well. Now the
incidents through outrage from elected officials as well as the community and
City Hall says that this was all taking place in front of Children. They did an
operation outside of one of our elementary schools as our kids were
getting dropped off by the buses of my parents. That's intentional. They did an
operation in front of a daycare where 3 to 5 year olds are looking out the
window, seeing glass get broken, somebody thrown to the ground that
looks like they could be one of their relatives.
Officials say they started hearing reports of ice operations in this part
of Connecticut sometime late last weekend or near the beginning of this
week. This is video of an immigration advocacy group. They send it to us
showing someone being arrested just days ago. Now, in addition to schools,
advocates say grocery stores and other businesses frequented by immigrants are
also being targeted. Advocates have formed patrol groups, if you will, to
respond and report ice activity
and really not to interact with them except for to record and try to keep at
least a 6 ft or better distance between them and ourselves. I mean, you know,
we're not trying to get in between, we're not trying to create an issue,
but we are trying to make sure that we're able to locate the families for
these people and let people know, you know, that their family member, we were
able to document who has been taken and that gives us the ability to then
follow up on what's being done
in a statement we just received within the last 20 minutes from the
Department of Homeland Security. They tell us they do not target schools but
will not allow criminals to hide in our nation schools and put the safety
of Children at risk. They go on to say that reports of them profiling
individuals are false. In the meantime, immigration advocates steve and Natasha
are planning an anti ice rally here next Wednesday evening at five o'clock
