Hey guys, if you are looking for ways to make the most out of your closet without spending
any money, stick around. I have your girl Chase with me here today and we're going to talk about
how to make the most out of your closet. Hey, what's up? It's Justine with Debt Free Millennials.
I have Perla with your girl Chase back on the show with me today. It's so good to see you again.
You know, the first video was so much fun. I had to come back. She just had to make an
appearance y'all. So don't forget to check out your girl Chase on Instagram and check out her
blog at yourgirlchase.com. I'm going to drop the links below so make sure you hit this girl up
because she knows all fashion finds and without freaking out your budget. It's just awesome.
So we're talking about how to make the most out of your closet. This is something you've done
and now you're going to teach me and everybody else how to do this because I suck at shopping
and I suck at looking at my closet and trying to figure out how to make really fun pieces and
look hot like you. So how do I do this? You know, it's not easy. No, you'd be surprised.
I feel like people have like these hidden treasures in their own closets but they just
don't know that they're there. So let's just help everybody out. We don't need to spend a lot of
money. You'd be surprised what you can find in your very own home. Hell yes, I love that. Okay,
so what can we start doing? Well, I think one of the best tips that I have is to opt for
timeless styles. I feel like the basics go very far. Like, don't just buy something because you
see it online and you think, oh my god, I'm going to look like my favorite Instagram girl. No,
look like yourself and opt for things that are going to give you the most bang for your buck.
Okay, so you're talking about more like timeless pieces versus fast fashion that we might find at
Forever 21. Right, so just look for things that are cut well, things that are going to make you
feel great and look amazing at all times of the year. Are there color palettes that we need to
stick to? I would say neutrals are king, especially if you want to get the most for your money.
My favorite neutrals to stick to are obviously black and white but charcoal gray is a great one.
Navy blue is very underestimated. Even a good maroon like the top that you're wearing,
that's a perfect neutral that looks great with so many styles of jeans, so many different colors
of skirts. Trust me, your shirt is amazing and you're going to wear it for many years to come.
Yay! Okay, I'm actually doing something good and I didn't even mean to. I literally put
this shirt on today and was like, whatever, we're going to record. So you've got the gray,
rockin' the gray, I've got the maroon, so these are good neutral colors that we can wear
over and over again. Yeah and they're very universally flattering for all skin tones.
If we switch shirts right now, we would look just as great. You've got more of a fair complexion,
my complexion is, I'm not even sure. You've got that California glow going on. Right? Yep. What
else can we get out of our closet? I would say another thing to look for are key investment
pieces. I'm talking about things that you might have to spend a little bit more money on now,
but that are really going to save you a ton, tons of money in the long run. So I'm talking
about things like quality denim, get those amazing jeans that you see at maybe like a Nordstrom or
Bloomingdale's that, yeah, they're a little bit more pricey. Maybe they're not the most
affordable out there, but they're going to last you and they're not going to fall apart in two
weeks. I have a horror story where I bought a pair of H&M denim jeans, I wore them on a date,
sure enough, they fell apart on me and it was the most embarrassing day of my life. Oh my gosh,
what happened? So I was on a date with a very nice young man, who shall remain unnamed,
and when I got up from my chair to like exit the restaurant with him, the seams split down
the side of my jeans. Oh no. And it was very embarrassing. Luckily it didn't split like on
my hip to like show my underwear, but it slipped like right on my thigh, so it just made me look
like I was this like fat monster when in reality I was just wearing very cheap denim. Oh my gosh,
and you're thin and you your body is perfect, so to know that these types of jeans just make
you feel like crap at the end of your date, like during your date. He laughed it off,
thankfully I laughed it off. I have a pretty decent sense of humor, but it really taught
me a valuable lesson to never buy cheap denim again, never buy anything cheaply made again.
You have to think about the the dollar that you spend on these items, like is it really worth
like risking these embarrassing moments? I think not. So where do you typically buy your denim now?
I typically buy my denim either from Madewell, Levi, or every now and then I'll find a really
great quality piece at Urban Outfitters. I feel like these retailers do a really good job of
making sure their cuts are very flattering, their timeless styles that still have a little bit of an
edge, and I have yet to have an issue with any of these retailers' denim, so. What else can we do?
How can we take a look at what's in our closet? I think that's something that you should always
keep in mind is their impulsifies are real. There's like a thing called a shopping high
that when you're out shopping with your friends and you're in the moment, you see something that
you think you're like obsessed with. You think you see something that you think is gonna like
change your life and transform you into this amazing fashionista, when in reality you're just
like you know passionate for 0.5 seconds and you just step away and really think is this gonna
be that life-changing piece that I want to buy right now? Back away from the rack, people. So I
have this thing called the come back to it rule which I kind of just developed on my own and I
always always enforce it with my friends whenever we're out shopping because a lot of my friends
love to shop and they love style and fashion, but you know sometimes we all get caught up in the
moment. I've gotten caught up in the moment before and it usually never ends up feeling exactly as
you think it will. In my mind that's when in doubt, do without. Yes, a great way to implement
this if you're like out shopping in person because for every millennial I actually do a lot of in
person shopping like I love the experience of going into a store and touching different materials
and just like making an experience with my friends. So say you're out at the mall and like
you find this amazing like leather jacket that's like $500 that you've been wanting your entire
life like me. Personal personal story, lots of personal stories today. But let's say that you find this
amazing jacket and you're about to like rip off your arm and sell it to buy it. What I would
recommend to do is to put this jacket on hold and you go throughout the rest of your shopping trip
and I feel like if you're still thinking about it towards the end of the shopping trip maybe
there's a chance that you might want to revisit it and maybe it is something that you want to take
home as your quality investment piece that you know you're going to want to wear for you know
the next five to ten years. However if you finish your shopping trip you go home and you forget all
about it that means it's never meant to be. It was just an impulse and you just saved yourself
a lot of money. So when I was looking at my closet I was kind of overwhelmed and I even
threw her into the mix and she may not have freaked out. I was a little overwhelmed not gonna lie
and I've been in a lot of closets. There's a lot of stuff in there. I also share my closet with
my husband so that may have added to the mix. That's not entirely your fault. Not entirely my
fault exactly. Kyle I'm watching you. Okay so you went in there and I said I just need help with
finding something that feels good, feels basic, but feels trendy. So we pulled out some stuff.
What were some of the things that you looked for? I looked for neutral colors. As I mentioned I
looked for things that were black, white, gray, maroon, navy, even olive is an amazing neutral.
Nude right now is a very trendy neutral. If you're about like that Kardashian general life
you know all about nude. Those pieces that you picked out I was like huh I hadn't looked at that
in a while. So shall we shall we show what that looks like? We shall. Okay so you picked out this
top. Yes. If you all can see it. Basic plain tee and what was it about it that caught your eye?
Well I feel like a plain white tee goes a really long way. I'm an owner of many plain t-shirts but
I feel like a white one is the most versatile. You can dress it up or down. This one actually
has a really cute zipper detail on the back which is something that I immediately noticed and I was
like hey here it is a basic piece that has a little bit of edge that I think would be very
great to pair with either like jeans or you can even throw a blazer on top of it and wear it to
a job interview. I feel like you just can't go wrong with like a basic white tee. Plus again
universally flattering for all skin tones, all ages, all shapes and sizes. It's all about it.
Yeah and this one this is actually from The Gap and what's cool about this is it's actually
layered in the front so this is double lined. I shouldn't say layered. It's lined so that when
I'm wearing maybe like a lacy nude bra you can't see the lace underneath so it actually works
really well and then you said to pair this with just throw that down pair it with just regular
denim. Yes so I'm a huge fan of minimalism. I feel like less is more especially with style and these
plain blue jeans are going to go far for you. I mean they're a classic they're a classic shape
but they also have a little bit of like whispering and fading throughout the entire
denim so I think it's really trendy yet still timeless. Huh and I never wear these jeans so
I am definitely going to have to pull these back out because they are just that
that basic classic denim blue. Yes. I feel like that's that's always going to be in style right?
I agree a thousand percent. It's like 90% of what I wear. Love a good blue jean. Okay so I have this
awesome skirt. It is I guess is this a-line? I don't know what shape this is. It's like a flared.
A flared this is micro suede very buttery yummy. I don't know what to put on top.
What do I how do I style this? I would style it well first of course depending on where you're
going who you're going to be seeing and what you're going to be doing but I would style it
with like a very form-fitting either a short sleeve or a long sleeve shirt really cute throw
on some necklaces with it if you're feeling cold you can even add tights or like a knee-high
stocking is really cute and trendy. Oh that would be cute. And what I love about it is that it's
black it's a neutral so you can pair it with like all sorts of different colors literally any color
of top you can pair with it even a black one. I love that and I never thought about and I think
you had mentioned body suits too. Yes. To wear underneath this guy so I was like huh. Yeah to
prevent untucking and just look more flattering and smooth. I'm actually feeling a lot more
confident to go into a store because I know what to look for the neutrals the fitted kind of body
suit or fitted and you said ribbed also. Ribbed is a really great material I guess it's not like a
pattern but it's more of a material that kind of breaks up anything solid that you might be wearing
so it doesn't look so like flat and boring. I know a lot of times people are afraid to wear neutrals
or afraid to wear these timeless basics because they don't want to look boring and they don't
want to blend in. You can do a lot with texture trust me I love a good texture. Awesome so adding
texture to some of these basic pieces really helps break it up visually. Yes. Love it oh my gosh I
can't wait to wear this skirt. How often do I need to be taking a look at the pieces inside my closet?
You know it varies person to person I like to look at mine I would say every three to six months
and I'm not so I'm not someone that like shops all the time but I'm constantly adding in pieces as
I'm giving them or throwing them away or selling them of course so I recommend for everybody to
give yourself a good spring cleaning winter cleaning summer cleaning if it helps to do it
by season that's perfect look for things that you just never wear things that are taking up space
things that are kind of making you feel bad for not wearing them or even just things that were
gifted to you that you had to pretend to like for a second but hey people move on it's not that big
of a deal it's just a piece of clothing. I'd love to know how often you guys are looking at your
closet taking inventory drop us a comment below because this is something that I feel like I'm not
very consistent about but every now and again I'll get that bug and that urge just to purge everything
from my closet and it's very sporadic so keeping yourself kind of on this timeline of checking in
every three to six months I love that idea. Yeah and you don't have to do it all at once you could
choose maybe one weekend you're gonna inventory all your tops maybe next week you audit your jeans
maybe the following week you audit your shoes it just depends on how much clothing you have
for example someone like me I really only own maybe like 12 to 20 shirts so it's super simple
super easy I think the most of any other item I have are shoes because I love a good boot and I
love a good flat and I love a good sneaker so I love these tips bottom line is when you implement
these tips you are saving money you are investing back into your closet for the long haul so that
you can focus on bigger money goals other than wasting it away on fast fashion or impulse buying
and don't be too hard on yourselves remember guys we're millennials I'm only 22 years old
I barely started making a salary this year so it's understandable for you to want to go crazy
and spend your first paycheck on like these amazing exciting pieces but you have to remember
everything that you do right now is going to affect your finances in the long run so it's
to implement these as soon as possible I'm talking to you high schoolers I wish I would
have known this stuff when I was 17 don't forget to follow this girl your girl chase
